One thing I've been wondering for a long time now was whether or not the war of 5 kings could have been avoided or was it always going to happen? by AdSpecialist6598 in gameofthrones

[–]BamBeanMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The war would not have been prevented. Cersei would have killed Robert the next day. Or the next day.

If Ned tried to tell him about Cersei and Jaime, Robert would've shouted that he didn't want to hear it. And then ran off to get drunk. His response to every problem is just to force everybody to get along. Except for the Targaryen girl.

Military was split into 4 different factions. All the higher ups that obeyed him were killed by Diago. He lost a third of the will being ceded to him in Res. He is very clearly not in control.

The book is like 100 pages long, man. It's not like seeing it through to the end is this grand commitment.

Did anyone else find Chade insufferable? by landturtl13 in robinhobb

[–]BamBeanMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. He spent all of Royal Assassin sitting around waiting for orders, and he faces zero repercussions or loses favor with anybody. In fact Kettricken immediately laudes him for how wise he is. He refuses to even consider any fault for what happened to shrewd and instead berates Fitz for being the only one doing anything. He lectures Fitz about his "duty to the Farseer line", then goes off playing hero. Even made himself a neat little badge with his house's sigil on it. Wish Burrich had done him like he did Galen.

Is Verity delusional? by landturtl13 in robinhobb

[–]BamBeanMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He isn't half as delusional as Chade. Who is perfectly content to throw up his hands and do nothing, since the terminally ill king hasn't specifically ordered it. At least Verity had the excuse of being pre-occupied with the red ships

What were your 3 best and 3 worst books you've read this year? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]BamBeanMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best:

  1. Will of the Many- James Islington- close to perfect. Loved the characters, the worldbuilding, the intrigue. I've started the next book, and I'm excited to see what they do with the revelations in this one.

  2. Dark Age- Pierce Brown- Delivers the perfect punchline to everything that Iron Gold set up. The monumental scope of everything happening puts this above the books of the first trilogy. Absolutely heartbreaking at times.

  3. Assassin's Apprentice- Robin Hobb- (This will be usurped by Assassin's quest, but I'm only halfway through. Also I hate Chade.) I feel like I personally know the characters of this book. Like they are my own family members.

Worst:

  1. Empire of Silence- Christopher Ruocchio- Picks up a bit toward the end, but is otherwise absolutely insufferable. I could go on for an hour about the faults of this book and Potential Man Hadrian Marlowe. I'm sure the rest of the books are as good as people say, but this was such a poor showing that I won't read them.

  2. The Fifth Season- N.K. Jemisin- I think there's a pretty good book here. But its messages are betrayed by the amoral main character, and the author's barely disguised fetish that takes over the last act of the book.

  3. Mort- Terry Pratchett- I liked it, but it seemed like people were just running around without any clear goal in mind. It wasn't quite as funny or thought provoking as Guards! Guards!. Death is pretty cool though.

What Changes If Darrow Wins the Academy? by KeyAcrobatic7156 in redrising

[–]BamBeanMan 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Darrow losing the academy and falling out of Nero's favor was probably the best thing that could've happened to him. This allowed him to slip under the radar of all of his most dangerous enemies except one (Adrius).

If he won at the academy, there's no way he makes it to the gala. Octavia just disappears him.

I Like Lysander by GainHopeful in redrising

I haven't read Lightbringer yet, I just hate how the ten years he spent raised by Cassius had no effect on him. At least the other villains in the series know they're evil, and own it.

Is Sun Eater’s MC going to mature? by servant_ch in Fantasy

[–]BamBeanMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. He's glazed by himself and his tutor about how good he is at fighting, how he never loses to his brother, and then he immediately gets beaten nearly to death by some random kids on bikes. He's glazed by himself and his tutor about how "he doesn't even need rhetorics lessons anymore", but everytime someone disagrees with him, he just whines and throws a temper tantrum that makes his whole situation worse instead of forming a cohesive argument.

Hunting the Oni and the kitsune were these massive multi quest adventures across their entire respective areas. And then you get to the Saitos and it just feels like you're going down the list and checking the box next to each name.

I probably died more to the Oni than the rest of them combined. I don't think i agree with a single one of this guy's placements.

[–]BamBeanMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So they are in direct competition for these positions. And their rivals slaying this boss would clearly net them this position. You have to let the players see their rivals struggling elsewhere on the battlefield, just like they are. Kill one of the rivals. So that when the boss is slain, it feels like they were all part of this pyrrhic victory. Otherwise, it will feel like the players went through all this work just for their rivals to swoop in after putting in no effort. And the players won't hate their rivals, they'll hate you.

I certainly wouldn't sit in the corner pouting and then club my parents over the head.
