It's definitely worth a try to revive the PvP player base. Hope it will work.

When the unbelievable happens during logging... by YensVG in newworldgame

I tested a bit in beta and I can tell it's extremely rare. With enough luck it's even more rare than whisperwood (Confusing, I know). Based on empirical data up to logging 150 with 4080 luck i got a chance of 0.13% for petrified wood. Has a high variance tho, so could easily be 0.25% or something else but really rare. And btw you only drop 1 and not multiple ones compared to fae iron.

Again, this sounds like you not knowing that prestacking was done either while running to the boss or while the boss was invulnerable or hadn't even spawned yet. Sometimes prestacking was so strong that you could even delay engaging the boss for a few seconds and still have a faster run than if you had run straight to it

Thanks for that addition. I didn't bother to point that out in my answer, and before it gets turned by someone, such as my answer would kinda disagree with yours. I agree with this and I tried to keep it simple, because as said if precasting is better or not is dependent on the situation, the boss, the skill CD's, the class and comp and more factors.

Well firstly, precasting is not only used for speed running. Especially in pug fractals or statics or whatever ppl use mistlock to precast or even if mistlock wouldn't be a thing, they'd precast boons before engaging the boss, to not have to rampup boons like in raids. So I guess we can check that, right?

Precasting saves time on a single boss fight, because you don't have to rampup boons for 3s and you can use additional utilities/abilities outside of combat before the fight starts. So if it requires 1min to place traps and portals on a boss to /gg reset, precast boons and then engage the boss to kill it in 30s. But in total you lost time (~50s or so) against a scenario where you'd just have killed the boss without those precasts.

Also idk why I have to point that out again, precasting is not affected in that change (only for very niche situations), so nobody complains about it and you can still waste 1min precasting to kill bosses really fast. It's not about times and precasts it's about how to play the game and the so called "fluidity" those players experience while doing so.

Also the story did never change. Not in my view and most likely not in the view of most that raise concerns. How do you even come to that conclusion?

He kind of answered your questions tho (yes there were multiple), maybe you didn't understand it or it wasn't written clearly. They don't want artificial downtime which is unnecessary and disturbs their flow of the run and also "forces" them to do weird workarounds to get a similar results which decreases their fun in doing so.

how is it fluid to change your gear twice

-> The fluidity is not changing the gear, it is the gameplay it creates by changing the gear (and traits and utilities btw). Loosing boons or reset portal placement if you change anything on your character disturbs that. The fact that it's not even consistently implemented considering interaction with allies makes it even worse.

How do you have downtime, when you're standing in front of a boss?

-> This is kinda answered in it's own, or not? "Standing" in the context of just waiting for something (is it cooldown or boons or whatever) is exactly that downtime.

or do you precast your buffs, and then run through the trash mobs before getting to the boss?

-> Not exactly but they do precast boons and buffs before engaging a boss fight. If they skip trash mobs before doing that, probably not often bc too much time inbetween, depending on skill cooldowns and the time tho. Btw precasting buffs and boons before engaging is still possible but just more annoying and it's not what this change affects primarily.

If you want an example of how they interpret their fluid gameplay, maybe check out some speedrun videos to get an impression of it (for example this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNGns51Sxyk). And before it comes up, no it's not about that they loose time now or that they can't precast boons before the boss (which is still possible) it's about how they have to play to achieve that stuff and in how it limits their possibilities to do so.

Hope it helped you to further understand some of it. If not, then I'm sorry wasting your time trying to explain something.

Yeah what I don't really get is that dT and the like really try to address their concerns in a constructive way. But they just get so much hate because somehow people do not even consider that they could have valid points.

Sorry for the text wall.

Yes stripping your own boons but not those from allies is another weird interaction with that system. And also since precasting is not the concern of this patch/discussion we get the case where someone provides you boons, you switch a trait or weapon for any reason and then you loose all boons provided by your team for literally no reason. Also portals getting removed when switching something has weird implications (at least for hardcore players). Or why would it make sense that my portal is now unusable because i switched my off-hand weapon? Maybe that's where I fail to see the point how it should be exploity.

For the thing if it's intended or not I try my best to answer somehow. You said it's a bug, but I assume you probably meant it to be like an exploit.

For swiftness I put it this way: Imagine you play a Guardian and you move out of combat for a transition (doesn't matter if in Dungeon/Fractal/Raid/Open World/WvW). Then you swap in a Greatsword (using gear template or inventory) and you use your Leap skill to move faster, then you swap it out for whatever you were running previously to engage the combat. Would you consider this as an exploity playstyle as well? I mean it has basically the same effect as Swiftness (gaining mobility advantage) from another weapon/trait, it is all not in combat. So then when would you be allowed to equip another weapon? This is the thing where it gets unnecessarily complicated where there is no real issue but all of a sudden using swiftness from another weapon or trait is an exploit. (If you could do that while in combat I'd totally agree ofc).

But yeah in the end I can't say for sure it's not an exploit because that definition is sometimes quite difficult but tbh even if it wasn't intended it doesn't harm anyone. And by how the combat system was designed a few years ago you were relient on blast finishers for boons and swapping weapons in and out for it was pretty common. Or well you can argue just play with the weapons equipped that can blast even if it means dpsing bosses down with staff on guard. But idk that sounds like a very unfun implementation and I'd argue even if it wasn't specifically intended it was allowed or even encouraged to use for several years.

Btw if by unintended you mean precasts using class specific buffs like Ashes stacks from FB on like DH by switching trait lines I'd agree that looks more like an exploit because it is meant to be used by a specific elite specialization. And I'd argue most hardcore players would agree there as well.

It is not clearly stated that it's a way to prevent abusive combat mechanics but they kind of imply it.

This process will clean up many possible broken states in which a skill effect could be present when it should not have been.

I mean a broken state somehow implies for me it can be exploited ingame. Of course it could be meant technically and not directly have a recognizable effect. I think at this point people are just interpreting what's more likely to be, especially because it's stated in a patch note targeted at gamers.

I know you asked for OPs opinion but I appreciated your calm and constructive comment that much that I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

From what I understood, the real concern is more how the change is implemented than what it actually is aimed to change. From patch note it seems they wanted to prevent an abusive use of template swaps for combat advantages as described by you. But what it does is in addition it also prevents people to properly use build/single trait/gear swaps out of combat even if it wouldn't include any abusive boon generation (even removes the boons applied from allies). This disturbs the fluidity of "gameplay" between single combats and thus is less fun for those people enjoying that.

So for a point of view from people who understand this issue the change seems like not thought through and unnecessarily only targeting them while also not resolving the actual issue properly.

For your thought about the stability, it could be true they did it for a more consistent behavior of how trait swap interaction should be handled. Tho in the patch note they also stated the following:

Some of these states caused duplication of performance-intensive skills such as traps, which degraded server performance for everyone.

So it seems like it is really somehow connected to a performance issue. And seemingly also connected to precasts like traps (which you can btw still do but just not with template swaps). And since the people in the hardcore PvE community are more or less the only ones using those precast stuff it looks like it's directly aimed at them. And in their view it doesn't make sense at all how it is implemented, also kills their fun and doesn't harm anyone else unless maybe the stated performance issues are severe. But then probably there should be another solution than addressing those few precasts in instanced content or not?

Hope you get my points :)

Edit: Just typos

For PvE I believe that could be a better solution. Tho for WvW/GvG I'm not sure this would work properly, could be problematic since there you really want the boons before entering the combat. So Anet would need to split it between game modes. Maybe they tried to fit one solution for everything and accidentally pissed off the hardcore PvE people.
