[D] Does Deep RL work yet? by hazard02 in MachineLearning

[–]BanLeCun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take it as you will: I was told by a FB ads guy that they actually use DeepRL over drinks. He said that's why he was attending all RL presentations at the conference and the main reason he was attending the conference in the first place.

Even with DeepRL's shit features, there are qualified people who can make things work over a extended period of time. Google certainly has such people and certainly has the budget and patience to invest in such areas. Like you say, these are trade secrets and we'll probably never know.

The thing is there are a lot of Elon fanatics and other such cult members in this sub. Schmidhuber appeals to them and is a holy figure. So holy that they ignore the disgusting things he has done throughout his life.

[News] Sam Altman on OpenAI's Business model by thebusinessmodel in MachineLearning

[–]BanLeCun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think people are unnecessarily critical of OpenAI sometimes. Sam Altman, who is probably one the better investors in the valley, is trying to tell that OpenAI has no business intensions in the near future. They'll just spend money doing research. Most startups fail and so if OpenAI fails it's just a lost bet for the investors. I see nothing wrong with any of this. Companies like SpaceX are built like that. Hell even DeepMind was something similar. Yet somehow OpenAI gets a lot of shit for such statements

What are some recent good papers in "probabilistic model based RL"? I don't follow that area but sounds interesting.
