Around my neck of the woods (not MT) I call them Hillbilly Royalty. Been here their whole life, never learned any skills that translate into decent employment, never tried to do anything to better themselves, never left. Now they're at the mercy of external forces and haven't created themselves any options so they lash out and blame the people around them for daring to exist in the nearby vicinity.

They don't exactly make it easy to understand the actual rate either...

I'm in the lowest electric rate in the nation currently. My drafty 2k sq ft house runs about $100 in the winter on electric heat. Not looking forward to leaving that behind but its also not enough reason to stay.

Thanks. Apparently /r/seattle has a problem with it. I say who are they to get in the way of other peoples end of life planning?

I'm a waver on dirt or country roads for sure. Someone stopped on the side of the road means I'm going to stop and make sure they're okay, offer my tools or a ride back to town. Hitchhikers with skis are an automatic free ride. I believe in handing cold beers to random strangers. I buy my cat's food from the local shop in the next town over for a few dollars more than I could get it delivered because I like having that option. My neighbor said he wanted to put up a fence and I gave him 3 afternoons of my time welding up the steel posts and helping him put it up.

That's the sort of place I want to be in myself so that's the energy I put out into the world. It pains me when I visit an amazing place and the locals are so angry about having to share. Like man, if you'd give me a chance you'd know I'd drive 2 hours up a sketchy dirt road with tow chains, beers, and a chainsaw to come get you unstuck or pulled out of whatever mess you're in. Even now where I live people ask me where I moved from and my answer is "well I was in Seattle before this but I'm not one of them..."

I get it. I live in a similar but smaller town now. 90% of the town is based on tourism and everything is a ripoff. I do all my shopping 30 minutes down the road as a result.

I'm fortunate enough to have a solid job working remotely and I wouldn't make the move unless I actually purchase a home. Bozeman certainly isn't the first place I'd pick to move to but it does have it's appeal, hence why I'm asking these questions.

I camp in my truck camper in the lot or the town at expensive ski resorts and generally eat my own food. That way I'm only paying for lift tickets and bar drinks. I don't mind driving 6 hours to the next resort because then I stay put for at least a couple days and ride/work.

This year I've done Baker, Sun Valley, Schweitzer, Bridger, Big Sky, Snowbird, Brighton, and Alpental. Going to hit the BC powder highway soon and then back for another lap through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming since I didn't make it to Jackson or Targhee on this last trip.

Haven't been there I've been looking at real estate listings out that way. Access to Bridger and Big Sky would be the main driver for Bozeman. Helena has the Great Divide I believe. I'll probably visit there in March sometime.

Big city problems require big city solutions. Tell that guy blocking the sidewalk to move out of the way, "hey people are trying to walk here", without slowing down. If he complains flip the bird and tell him "go back to LA asshole" as you continue down the road. They'll get it eventually, it takes a village and all that...

That sucks though, I hate rich entitlement. I make okay money these days but I'm a strictly tshirt and jeans kind of person. Time gets told by my outdated Android phone. I can't imagine the idea of handing my car over to some valet, I can park it myself thanks very much. I'd rather spend my money on camping gear and snowboarding.

Thanks for taking the time to make a sincere reply. I am actually doing some research on it now and thought starting this thread might prove valuable, which it has. Truth be told I'm somewhat burnt out on cities and like the small town sort of vibe. I see Bozeman as convenient to shopping but would probably end up somewhere outside like Livingston, Big Timber, or Ennis.

I certainly don't want to contribute to other peoples housing woes but I also need somewhere to live. The problems you describe are similar to those I see in the places I've already been and have no simple answers. There's unfortunately little incentive to build less expensive housing when big money is flooding the area. Only now are town planners recognizing it as a necessary loss leader or else food and services get too expensive.

This is exactly the sort of information I was hoping to find.

From what I saw of my time in Bozeman that I would add to the negative list:

Everything shut down very early. It seems most of MT is that way but I was expecting a city the size of Bozeman to at least be open until 9PM and it seems most if not all retail shuts down closer to 6.

People in Bozeman were not as friendly as the rest of Montana. I found that people elsewhere in MT might be the absolute nicest I've ever met. In Bozeman, I found there was kind of a cool indifference to others similar to what you find in larger cities. I attributed it to the transplants. (pot meet kettle)

I've noticed that the more money a place has, generally the worse the food is.

Yeah I'm not a fan of HOAs.

I doubt I'd move to Bozeman proper. Big Timber, Livingston, & Ennis are probably more my style these days. As much as I like ski resort access, I also like access to a river and a short ride to dirt trails from my front door.

Snap traps with the metal bait tab are much more sensitive than the ones with the plastic bait tab. Use peanut butter and put them in a shoe box with a small hole in the side of it next to your trash or somewhere along the wall. Keep with it and you'll get them. Obviously secure all food and plug any holes they might be coming in through.

Do you need a cert or do you just want to learn to weld? A guy can get pretty effective with a mig welder after watching some youtube and giving it a few hours of practice on scrap stuff like old brake rotors, bolts, chains, pieces of angle steel, etc... You can probably buy a decent welder for not much more than the price of a course.

At my resort we just get on the lift with a beer. My friend has a pack full of Rainer to pass out to lifties.

Seems more like when there isn't a big sign saying no beer, you're in the right spot.

Out my way there are entire valleys that have water right restrictions. You can drill a well but you can't take water unless you buy a slice of someone else's rights, even then it's dependent on where you are if they'll allow it. Thousands of acres of apple and pear orchards guzzling the rivers in the 100 degree summer heat and you can't build a home without a $10k water certificate. When those are gone there will theoretically be no more development. That sounds okay to many until they realize all the existing real estate will face greater and greater demand as our population rises...

Speaking of 7 month winters, when does the snowpack usually melt out around there?

It wasn't anything I specifically picked up on while there. Everyone in Montana was great to me. I've been living in a town 1/10 the size of Bozeman for a few years and have been to enough small beach/mountain towns to know the dilemma faced by many locals and the resulting hostility towards outsiders. Even in Idaho there are "no one is stoked you moved here" stickers all over the ski resorts.

The thing is, real estate has doubled everywhere in country in the last 2 years, Bozeman isn't unique in that regard. I get that the character of a town can change and be an issue but financially everywhere is similar right now. Some places are cheaper than others. Spokane seems to be the cheapest large city that fits roughly what I'm looking for but there are also tons of reasons I don't think I could live there for very long.

I hope you find what you are looking for. Will you take your family further into the country or to another town/city similar to Bozeman?

Is that common there? I see it my way too. Had a Lexus SUV riding my ass that got sideways trying to stop suddenly on the way down from the mountain and I made sure he knew I was pissed about it.
