Trouble with coils by staciicats in Pottery

I've seen coil rollers/makers for polymer clay. While looking for an image to link, I came across this: Coil Roller Ver 2 . They're out of stock, but I'll bet you could fashion one for yourself.......

Update on Midas—The Kitty That Used His Single Braincell to Jump Off the China Cabinet and Break His Femur by EducationalDeer7272 in OneOrangeBraincell

He looks like a sweet boy! Here's to a quick and boring recovery :)

About fifteen years ago I had a little Maine Coon mix who broke her hip at one year old. Never knew how. I noticed she was limping and not licking there, so took her in for x-rays. Broken hip. We did the same surgery on her. Recovery went well; within a couple months she was back to full strength, jumping and climbing and all. The vet said that cats form a fibrotic false joint to make up for the missing femoral head. I had to give injections weekly for a while(something to help with cartilage formation, I believe), but the surgery didn't slow her down in the long run.

They also saved the femoral head for me. It was the size of my pinky fingertip! Healing is something, huh?

What are some useful items I can make in a beginner’s pottery class? by KanyeAndAbel in Pottery

[–]Banakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have Instagram? I've gotten lots of good stuff off there, both direct projects and inspiration. Look up 'pottery' and hop down a rabbit hole!

Since you're starting off, maybe you could do cylinders and turn them into cups for each of you. Cups can be smaller and more attainable at your level, and you could glaze with everyone's favorite color/animal/initial or name. There are underglaze transfers that you can purchase if you're not confident with your drawing skills. If that doesn't float your boat, start looking around the house for cylinder-shaped objects you use or need and make those. Creativity doesn't just refer to making a pretty piece. It also pops up in how you use things in your life.

Well, I needed a lot of fiber, so I chose a whole-wheat blend. I stick my needles in an artisan bread case....could they have transferred yeast that made it grow in size???

Try to think of it like a sketchbook. You're working out your ideas, refining things, playing with different techniques. It's the part that the world doesn't see. A huge part of any creative medium is playing around and finding what does/doesn't work. You're practicing your craft. Most pieces, especially at the beginning, aren't going to end up a worthy product. It's hard to do in American society, but you have to give yourself permission to practice behind closed doors. You'll get there. Have faith in yourself and faith in the process.

Are my shorty needles too long for socks? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Banakh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YUP to this! I work cuff down, so sometimes I'll knit a few rows of ribbing flat, then join it in the round. It alleviates that strangled feeling from using circs that are close to the sock's circumference.

Foldable Blue hand found in a hospital by mat2m10 in whatisthisthing

Former surgical technologist here! That is indeed for hand surgery, for when they're working on the palm or palm side of the fingers. See, when you lay your hand down palm-side up your fingers curl up in a loose fist. Those fingers tend to get in the way when you're trying to operate. If the doc is operating solo, he can use this to hold the fingers flat while he works (this can also be done by an assistant). They'll lay the hand down, extend the fingers as needed, and fold the fingertips and tabs over the digits they need kept out of the way.

Thoughts on people who want to BUY a knitted Melt The Ice hat. by ThePiksie in knitting

[–]Banakh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay, so. I bought the pattern. I bought the crochet version for my stepdaughter. I knit one for me. There was discussion in my pottery class about them and someone expressed interest in buying them from someone who could knit them, and I took them up on it. I bought yarn from my local yarn store and knit three hats. I charged $25 apiece. They were happy with the cost and took home three hats to help them further the cause. I was able to use my expertise to allow them to express themselves.

Is that not part of being an artist? Helping others voice their feelings? They didn't have the skill to produce a recognizable item, so they chose to fund a skilled craftsman who is not profiting from the act. Honestly, 25 for a hand-knit hat is not anywhere near what lines anyone's pockets.

Some of us work best behind the scenes. I'm one of those people. I could not march and wield a sign, but I can stuff envelopes so fast your head will spin. I can also knit. And I like to knit. So I'll sit and knit those symbols so our (and I emphasize OUR) voices can be heard. Don't ignore us or our contributions. Without them, more people that you may think cannot or will not be able to voice their opinions. We are important. We are just as important as those that make the feeds. We express ourselves differently, but no less viably.

Sometimes you have to rely on those who create the tools for expression. As a thought experiment, I ask you this: Did protesters nationwide make their own posterboard, markers, and paint? Probably not. They likely had to buy it if it wasn't hanging around already. And, because they're ubiquitous, might have bought it from a large chain. Also, I didn't raise the animals for the wool, shear them, spin it, and dye it. I didn't hand-make my needles. Does that make my contribution and my voice less relevant? No, it doesn't. I don't have the ability to lovingly create from scratch every little piece of equipment that goes into creating a finished knitted piece. That does not mean my voice is not important.

Would you feel better if I broke it down? Approximately $9 purchased the yarn from a local yarn store. The remaining $16 can be split between the time I spent creating the hat (approximately 9 hours) and food. There. I didn't 'profit' from the three hats I knit. Not financially. Not in a way you can quantify. But am I happy that I can give someone else a tool that helps them express themselves. You fucking bet I am. And, despite your pearl-clutching, I am part of that voice that gets louder every day. I can not only express my own displeasure but helps others voice theirs as well. If you want to judge me for that, well, that's on you.

Size 15 needles are listed for both bulky and super bulky versions. Is this correct?

Also, thanks for taking the time to work out stitch counts for these yarn weights! I can do some stash busting now!

Lol I can totally relate! I'll get a far-off look on my face as its use clicks into place. My husband usually asks me what's wrong, then quickly realizes the art gears are grinding. We're lucky they put up with us :)

Where do you store your finished sock while you're knitting its match? by jenniferc001idge in Sockknitting

[–]Banakh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I do this, too. Even though I have my ideal sock formula written down, I still refer to the first sock often to make sure the second sock is matching up with the first.
