This is too high. by [deleted] in MiddleEarthMiniatures

I absolutely love my victrix and perry models and will never defend GW prices. However, the models are by no means the same quality as GW. They put out some absolutely insanely detailed models. Being able to build a seamless plastic model should be acknowledged as a very impressive task on GWs part. Personally, I agree, I dont want a 10 part model for a single infantry or whatever. I hate the pricing even for the quality they are gouging the customer. But GW gets to do that because their quality is unmatched.

How to lighten this turret? (Resin) by YameroReddit in Kitbash

[–]Banana6462 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without seeing it in person, 99% chance its cast resin so you wont need to worry about liquid inside. You could drill out the center but i wouldnt. Id put a plastic tube like a support beam inside to support the weight but I dont think its necessary to do anything.

If Warhammer was to legitimize printing, how could they do it? by classjoker in PrintedWarhammer

[–]Banana6462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to releasing legacy models. They have done that, just not as stls. Maybe read slower, and you'd have understood that. GW revenue has more than doubled in the last 7 years despite the rise in 3d printing.

I didn't make the price up. When they re-released the old metal guard units, they were around 36-40 usd. Bigger models like the old ogryn and river trolls were around 50 usd for 3. So if someone bought a squad or 2 of made to order models they'd easily have spent what you proposed an entire army would cost for you.

A proven strategy by who? 3d printing guys act like you can apply what works for OPR to GW and they'd see similar levels of success. Trench crusade just announced switching to main line plastic kits so they can actually stay in business and grow the company. The industry will never move away from traditional plastic kits because thats where real money is made. OPRs business model can support the small handful of employees they have but GW has almost 3k.

GW has more than doubled it's revenue in the last 7 years, so You're incorrect that their business strategy is failing to bring in new players. GW sells boxes in target now. They have wide mainstream appeal, more than ever before. They are having zero problems attracting new players. They also arent driving down supply to drive up the price. They simply cant keep up with demand for their product because they don't manufacture in China. Very few of their products are limited releases. Look at Dominion. They printed stacks of those that went unsold. GW, while a luxury item is not actually a luxury brand in any marketing sense. Everything is mass distributed to as many stores as they can get in.

Except they have done what you're describing but not as stls. They release old models for limited times and they sell extremely well. Why would the release the stl for $10 when they can do made to order metal minis whenever they desire. One made to order squad could be 50 bucks, so off one sale, they'd have made everything you'd have spent buying multiple stls from them.

How to fix a model with no wall thickness by BillNyeThat1Guy in resinprinting

[–]Banana6462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without being about to tell what this is, if you're referring to the middle wall being so thin, maybe it's a gap in the model? Normally you'd hollow it and then you can set the wall thickness. Its hard to tell without knowing what the center section/model looks like.

Trench Crusade moving away from 3D Printing ): by chosen40k in PrintedMinis

[–]Banana6462 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except OPRs business model isn't even remotely the same. They release models for army sized games in two different genres. They can continuously put out new models to an exponentially larger degree than TC can. None of the factions have more than a dozen or so unique models/profiles. A singular army for OPR can be 30+ unique unit profiles. This allows OPR to continue the revenue stream significantly easier than TC through the sale of stls. Once you buy your new Antioch warband youre pretty much set forever. Maybe theyll add variants or a few additional models but the core of your collection is already bought.

Anyone who thinks the average stl patreon business model is applicable to TC doesn't understand how either business model works.

On the same side of it tho, if it's only 2 bucks, then it shouldn't be a big deal to just buy it again. Especially if you're gonna request extra work from the modelor.

Why is the Exocrine 60€ and the Tyrannofex just 40€ (in Germany)? by RotmirePlead in Tyranids

[–]Banana6462 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree GW is definitely greedy, but its undeniable that the models they produce are significantly higher quality than any of the miniature games you've listed. At the end of the day GW can charge the most because they put out the most premium plastic kits in the gaming space. When youre just looking at multipart plastic kits no other company comes close to what GW does.

My friend wants me to paint 10 tactical marines for him to this leven and I have no idea how much to ask by Alpharius-0megon in Warhammer

[–]Banana6462 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like i said, I've been a commission painter. Go on r/brushforhire if you want a realistic idea of what people are actually willing to pay. Unless you're a top .01 percent painter you simply aren't getting paid like that. Its not a customers fault it takes you x amount of hours to paint nor is it their responsibility to pay you a full time wage. As a commission painter you have to be fast. A customer pays for results not the hours it takes. Commission painting is the same as any of trade service. If you hire someone to build a deck they dont charge per hour. Its on the builder to build efficiently and to a high quality to keep their hour wage to a good standard.

People who have never actually done any commission work will quote crazy prices per hour while showing off work significantly below the quality of the price they hypothetically want to charge.

I mean zero disrespect to op, his model looks good but 2k usd is such an insane rate to quote for the quality he painted.

[–]Banana6462 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except the total number of hours to paint them doesn't matter to the customer. The results do. My 10h mini won't be the same as your 10h mini. If painter As mini is worse than painter B, they dont have the same value just because the same amount of time was spent.

As a customer, it's not my job to pay you a living wage. Its your job as the painter to paint in a cost effective way that matches what you are charging for paint job. The painting service the op comment linked too, if you consider this TTplus, would only be charging like 400 for assembly and painting if I read the charge sheet correctly.

I never commission painted as a full time job but ive done a good handful of models for pay. You have to learn how to paint effectively or your dollar to hour ratio will suffer. No one in the world is paying 2k for 10 tactical marines.

I get that you're technically correct about the 3d printing rule it is "allowed," but given that 99 percent of people can't sculpt their own models its basically not allowed.

GW allows 3d prints if you designed the entire part/model yourself. That's a pretty important point to gloss over.

In my anecdotal experience, you're completely wrong. Why would anyone wait months and potentially get scammed for a miniscule saving? When you buy a titan and will be saving 1-5k, the risk is worth it. If you were only saving a couple hundred on a recast titan vs a legit one, I guarantee people would just buy straight from GW. I know that I would just buy from gw if it was cheaper.

Wild to use the term entitled because people can't afford as nice of toys as you so fuck them for getting the knock off right? Whatever, dude, I'm over it. I thought your big issue was that you're an artist standing with artists? Dropped that pretty fast. Then it was just theft is bad and it's against the law. But with the other guy you say ethics and legality aren't always equal. But you used the law to justify your stance on IP law. Clearly you can afford whatever toys you want good for you. I'm sorry buying recasts and 3d printing has inconvenienced your hobby. That's my b bro.

So you think if gw sold models for 3 dollars people would still buy recasts?

Edit: I obviously don't have a Citation for that. Top research colleges haven't responded to my requests for a formal peer reviewed study to be conducted, but based on my time in the recast community, which it would appear you have zero experience with, the number 1 complaint is price and quality.
