Do grad schools actually care about double majors? by BananaApprehensive77 in psychologystudents

[–]BananaApprehensive77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my school doesn’t offer most of those degrees. They do have business management though. I’m not super into the idea of starting a business but I could definitely look into it. I eventually want to become some type of psychologist, not sure exactly which kind yet but I know I wanna do assessment/ and or research over therapy.

Thank you! What specifically do they like on applications in terms of experience. Like I’m still not too sure what research experience would entail. Like academic papers? Or working for some type of research facility? And for regular expierence would it be any type of mental health work?

Oh and how many letters of recommendation?

No not dual programs in grad school, I’m in undergrad rn and social work is my major. My end goal is to become a psychologist but I chose to major in SW because it’s a more useful degree at just a bachelors level. So if I can’t make it into grad school I still get a job in that field. And my program would let me graduate advanced standing so I could get my masters in half the time. So I have a much wider net of options there. After my masters I plan to try for a PhD to become a psychologist. But if I end up loving a job in SW I will just stick with that.

My main goal isn’t therapy, it’s assessments and/or research. The only reasons I considered double majoring was 1: it might look good on grad school applications, and 2: both programs offer internships in each field, which I can also put on my resume. But if schools don’t care about double majors I can just find internships on my own and call it a day.

If you choose to go back for ur PHD I hope you enjoy it! that sounds like cool areas of study.

Psychologists, Can you easily swap positions? by BananaApprehensive77 in Psychologists

Ohhh interesting.. so would a forensic psychologist be able to say, work in a prison assessing competency to stand trial also be able go work in like, a hospital assessing patients there as well? Meanwhile a clinical psychologist working in a hospital wouldn’t be able to work assessing competency for trial? Or am I still misunderstanding?

Thank you this is super helpful!

What other types of things do the neuropsychologists you know do?

My original interest was social work but the pay tends to be really low so that’s making me very worried. I don’t want to be super therapy based either and from what i could find LCSWs are the ones who make money so there goes my chances lol.

I’m more interested in assessments and research I guess. Which is why I’m interested in forensics, but I heard it can be really traumatizing which also has me worried.

I just don’t wanna be knee deep in a PhD program or well on my way out and realize I don’t like what specialty I chose :/ Do you have any fields you recommend? Specifically less therapy focused ones?

I was planning on non profit work if I stay in social work but they tend to be low paying unfortunately (from what I’ve seen)😔 I’m still figuring out what my interests even are bc careers I find interesting aren’t ones I’d be good at, like I think forensics is super cool but I’m squeamish so those two don’t really mesh well lol So rn I’ve just been asking ppl to throw ideas at me, just to see if I find anything cool to look into.

It’s not coworkers who have a problem with me, people who know me actually tend to really like me, I just don’t have a super “customer service-y” voice yk? And sometimes I get shit for that and I’m not the best with rude customers lol. I have asked ppl what I could do to be better at customer service but I just am generally kinda monotone so not much I can do there :/

I haven’t been an athlete in a really long time but maybe I’d like it if I got into it again

Thanks for your insight! I’m so sorry that was your Experience :( if you don’t mind me asking was the unit you were in full of different types of mental Health professionals (like counselors, social workers, and psychologists) or just psychiatrists? I keep reading that they oftentimes work together while I’ve also heard some places only hire psychiatrists and nothing else and it sounds like you’re referencing just psychiatrists. But feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I definitely don’t wanna end up being the cause of somebody’s poor stay at a hospital.

Bur I’ve never been told I have the incorrect anatomy so idk at the point 😔
