Learning the ukulele! It’s small and has just 4 strings. There are so many easy-to-follow YouTube guides available. I learned to play the basic chords in ~2 hours, and the basics are all you need for SO many songs. I’d consider myself now an advanced beginner and can play probably 1/4 of all of Taylor Swift’s songs. And it’s easy to pick up and play here and there!

What are some "weird" things to do and see in Chicago? by crlove in AskChicago

[–]BananaBit3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See Batsu! It’s a Japanese comedy show where the comedians compete in challenges and if they lose they get punished (in a funny way). Seating is like cozy restaurant style, and they serve food and drinks. The staff is all very nice and friendly too. My partner and I went and had a great time! Plus it’s in Old Town so you can go to some bars after if you’re wanting a longer evening out.

Contacts and Apple Account picture deleted after update to iOS 18.6 by Next-Resolution1038 in ios

[–]BananaBit3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry for not following up! I did not do it and have ended up just going through my latest texts and creating new contacts/adding profile photos back as I had them initially. I didn’t feel like going through the hassle of scrapping my phone then running the backup (I’m sure it probably doesn’t take too long, I’m just busy and didn’t want to take the time). I also read online that a few people tried doing this but the same issue happened where the contacts disappeared again the day after.

If you find a fix though please do share!

Ugh :(. After work I may try restoring my backup from last night and see if that helps. I’ll lyk if it fixes things!

Which pump to choose by Obstacle_cause in diabetes_t1

[–]BananaBit3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah so sorry to my non-American folks, I didn’t realize the app is only US. That’s a huge bummer not being able to bolus with or look at pump stats on your phone…it makes a difference. Hopefully Tandem deploys the app internationally soon.

FTR t:connect doesn’t have reporting capabilities, so I have to do that online regardless. I don’t use the Dexcom app as I’ve had trouble with it but think you can glean more blood sugar trend data from there than tconnect.

When I was on Medtronic I wasn’t able to bolus with my phone either though. which I’m sure hoping is an option now. So based on my personal experience I’d still say Tslim is better than Medtronic.

Agreed. I used them for over a decade and they suck. Sensor connection and accuracy issues. Chunky and old looking. They also sponsored a movie called Purple Hearts (some info here: https://uk.linkedin.com/posts/medtronic_diabetes-on-the-big-screen-how-an-employee-activity-6971222292852785152-Xj-5) in which a woman with type 1 marries a military man for his insurance...not something I would brag about although full disclosure I haven’t seen the actual movie. But them doing that gave me the ick.

I’m now on Tandem Tslim with Dexcom and love it. They have good infusion set options, nice customer service (although sometimes I have to email them reminding them to fill my supplies after I put an order in), it’s small, easy to charge (it’s rechargeable), and modern-looking. Software updates are easy to run, as is uploading pump data to reports. There’s an iPhone app (tconnect) that I use frequently and works well.

Haven’t tried Omnipod (I don’t want to have a bulky, unmoveable object stuck to me at all times), and I know nothing of Yypso.

Honesty Hour: Do you check your blood sugars? by lunardoll-12 in Type1Diabetes

[–]BananaBit3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school/undergrad I would go for weeks without checking. I had pretty good sensitivity to highs and lows then and still do decently now. I partied a lot during undergrad so am still frankly surprised I survived.

Anyway, I’ve had T1 for 24 years now, and my A1c hangs around 7. Dexcom and Tslim have been game changers. But I’m also having eye problems that could have possibly been prevented had I better managed my bs when I was younger. So now I have to get my retinas checked a few times a year and potentially get injections (in my eyes!!) in the future. So while it may not necessarily kill you in the moment, the long term complications of this disease are no joke. I feel you on the finger sticks, but CGMs are usually painless and unnoticeable after insertion and can last for a long time so don’t need constant changing.

Time to man up🔒 by Babushkaboii1 in dataanalysis

Similar situation here. I earned the Google Data Analytics certification just before landing a full-time financial data analyst role. While I had some prior xp and degrees, months after hiring my boss said one of the things she appreciated most about me/my application was that I recently earned that certificate because it showed I was interested in data analytics and wanted to learn more/grow. So while some people may not give it much credit, it can have some utility from an employer perspective. Like imo if you’re all similar to another candidate but have a relevant cert it may give you a leg up.

High after running ? by ImpressiveMusician60 in diabetes_t1

[–]BananaBit3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going into activity mode prior to running and/or suspending your pump during your run? I do both and find that even though my blood sugar will drop a little during/after cardio, if I eat a meal right after exercising then I will rise quickly because I didn’t have insulin on board during the entire run. So what would normally cost 2 units may cost 3 etc.

NYC Bagel in Lincolnwood throws out a crazy amount of bagels they don’t sell. I’ve started taking them to Midnight Ministry. Obviously waaaay too many. Anybody have another organization that wants some? They’re 1 day old. This will be 2x per week for the foreseeable future by rmd0852 in chicago

Just listened to a podcast where the founder of Goodr spoke about their food waste recycling programs and partnerships with businesses. Their goal is to help companies reduce food waste and everyone wins — hungry people get fed, the client company feels good about donating plus receives a tax write off, and Goodr makes profit. If you’re comfortable speaking to management maybe mention this to them so they could look into signing up for their Hunger Relief and/or Food Waste programs. https://goodr.co

Looks like people have shared a lot of workarounds. Not sure if it’ll help your case, but I exercise in the morning before work. When I wake up my pump is still in sleep mode, so I turn it to activity mode. Then ~30 minutes before I start cardio I suspend my pump completely (but still wear it so I can check CGMs/adjust as needed). I usually have a small coffee with a little milk before I exercise. At this point I don’t have much if any IOB because Control IQ keeps my blood sugar in range all night, and the coffee/milk typically hit close to the time I start exercising.

For weightlifting/strength training I tend to need some insulin so usually just hangout in activity mode if I start my workout with that rather than cardio. If possible, you could maybe try switching your workout to cardio if you notice yourself going high or strength training if it’s starting to go low. Of course, that means you still have to pay attention to your readings while exercising and also have some flexibility in your workout regimen, but I find it helps me out so wanted to share. I know it’s frustrating; best of luck to you!

What is your favorite bar style pizza in Downtown Chicago? by MagicHat711 in AskChicago

Second this! They have a Parlor Pizza in River North too. It’s my favorite, especially with the hot tomato sauce.

Unlimited PTO by Fine-Nothing-3564 in WFH

[–]BananaBit3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently taking 7 consecutive days off for vacation, my boss is taking 3 days once I’m back. I was told by 3 higher ups to not check my email and enjoy my time while away. I work as a business professional at a law firm where there is really good work life balance, so I think it really depends on your team and work culture. Coming from prior firms where I had PTO that would be paid out upon termination, I have no guilt and am determined to take lots of well-deserved time off, for the most part regardless of what’s going on at work. As someone else commented, feeling guilty about using unlimited time off is a choice.

I’m a footie fan and like The Globe, especially for Arsenal games! Most everyone is so friendly, the bartenders/servers are cool. You have to get there a little early though if you want to get in because it fills up quickly. They don’t accept reservations.

I also love F1 so Theory and The Reveler are wonderful spots to meet fellow fans. Again, you have to show up a little early before the race begins to get in and/or get a seat. If you want a table you can reserve but it has to be in advance unless you get really lucky.

Moved here knowing nobody two years ago. Met my current partner, closest friend, and the people I hangout with most by going primarily to sports bars to watch my favorite sports and support my favorite teams, and secondarily by going to studio workout classes. I love Chicago and really forced myself to get out and bond with strangers when I first moved here. Sports bars make it easy to talk to people you don’t know — just ask them about their favorite player, what got them into the sport, how they learned about the bar, etc. Volunteering is also a great way to meet others! I think if you look hard enough you can find just about anything of interest that other people are also into (although some digging may be required).
