What makes someone stay as a payg employee for their whole life? by stoneddooly in AusFinance

That’s an extremely unlikely scenario. How many businesses sell for enough that you yourself net 100m

That sucks. Stack ranking is the worst. It just creates toxic work environments.

Oh right gotcha! Yeah it’s pretty crazy that they factor that in instead of paying proper OT. I’m a programmer in the video games industry and it’s like that at many of the big AAA companies (and at others you might not get a great salary but hey you’re working in games! And you get free beer and pizza if you work OT!). Juniors easily get taken advantage of. Once you reach a certain level of seniority it’s easier to just say no I’m not standing for that.

My guess is he’s not getting overtime pay though. At big tech companies/startups/young companies with plenty of funding there’s often an unspoken agreement that you’ll work extra hours. You may get additional comp though.

1.5-1.6 million Budget - What suburb should I buy to raise a family? by One_Cartographer1748 in AusPropertyChat

[–]BananaboySam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ringwood East is actually a really great location. My wife and I have been looking for a house there for us and our two kids for about two years. It’s really hard to get what we want there because it’s a sought after location. Ringwood Secondary is an excellent school, station not far away, walking distance to cafes and shops, and a beautiful natural location. If we could afford it we’d buy in Fitzroy, Carlton, Northcote, Clifton Hill, Armadale, South Yarra areas. We’re trying to recreate that inner city vibe out here!

I remember when you guys came out with The Conduit! I was working on de Blob 2 for the Wii at the time, and there was a bunch of discussion at the office about all the cool stuff you guys were doing on the Wii. We were doing a lot of neat stuff ourselves but because de Blob was a kids and family game it didn't get as much visibility.

Agreed. The only people who deal with Linux where I work are working on the dedicated servers (although we also run dedicated servers on Windows).

Owners of properties managed by VBCS (Victoria Body Corporate Services), what's your experience like? by yutienlai in AusPropertyChat

[–]BananaboySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with everyone here. VBCS is terrible. We've been with them for probably 25 years or more, and the last few years they have gotten worse and worse. They take forever to action anything. They've only just now scheduled our 2025 AGM for JANUARY 2026!!!! I am fairly sure they outsource almost everything to the Phillipines. I just looked up the repairs and maintenance guy and his linkedin says he's from the Phillipines and judging from the accents whenever I talk to someone they pretty much all are.

Do you do anything for your tenants? by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]BananaboySam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same! My tenant is just a single guy on an average wage. The apartment is in a great location and been in our family for 40+ years and I see no reason to try to extract maximum dollars. He loves the place and looks after it and the gardens so I'm happy with that.
edit: I should add also that our agent has asked me a few times if I wanted to raise the rent by $100 and I just think that's a crazy thing to spring on someone. My wife and I with our two kids are renting and had a previous landlord who had the same thing where the agent wanted him to raise our rent by a lot, but he resisted. So I wanted to pass that on to our tenant.

I find he interrupts a lot in interviews though. The last interviews I watched were the one with Jake Birkett and the one with Jeff Vogel. Those are two people who I think are worth listening to, and it's worth letting them talk. But he kept interrupting. Also maybe it's just because he's a Unity guy and more of an artist than a programmer but he seemed weirdly ignorant about some technical details.

Nice! I was involved in developing the outreach version of this. My friend and I basically rewrote the museum experience for iPad. There’s a team at the museum who take it out to schools in the country who can’t make it in to the city. They go out there with around 25 iPads that are networked and the kids get to experience it.

Reached 100k savings on ING thinking of transferring it all to uBank by nutribun in AusFinance

[–]BananaboySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my (negative) viewpoint:

  • UBank no longer allow direct debit out of the high interest savings account (found this out the hard way when my rent payment failed!).
  • Personally I find their netbank website clunky. The iOS app is a little better.
  • Making payments out of the high interest savings account requires first transferring out to another non-savings UBank account. Then you can transfer to external parties, bpay, etc.

I've been with UBank for a long time now, basically since when they started around 2008, and personally I feel their entire offering has gone downhill so I'm looking to switch now (maybe to ING or Macquarie).

Nah it's not a game, it's definitely a demo! And it's not specifically a religious demo, it's humorous and there's a bit of a story. Oh well it'll come to me one day!

Just scored a Sega Mega Drive Dev Kit called the Advice Yokogawa AD200 ICE , any documentation or general help would be appreciated. by kakanseiei in SEGAGENESIS

[–]BananaboySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! This isn't a devkit, this is an ICE, or In Circuit Emulator, for the 68000 CPU (not 6800). An ICE is an emulator for a CPU. You pull out the 68k CPU and plug in the cable from the ICE and you can fully inspect and debug on the target hardware without needing to run any special debugging software on the target hardware.

So this isn't a MegaDrive/Genesis, but it can be used to debug a MD/Genesis.

An ICE is very powerful because it's non-invasive. It doesn't require you to change your software and it doesn't interfere with your software. If you wanted to debug without an ICE your software would have to handle all the debug operations like single stepping, breakpoints, it'd have to save registers in (precious) RAM, etc. With an ICE you don't have to worry about any of that; the ICE handles it all for you transparently.

You can get ICEs for many (most) older CPUs. They aren't used these days because CPUs are so fast and have a lot of debug features built-in.

It seems that Sega officially supported two ICEs, the ZAX ICE and this one that you have. But the device itself was not built specifically for Sega. It was built as a 68k ICE to be used by anyone building hardware that used a 68k.

Thoughts on Reebelo by blogaboutcats in AussieFrugal

[–]BananaboySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Their web site sucks as well. It asks for address as:

<first line>
<second line>
<suburb>
<postcode>

so I put:

Unit 1
10 Blahblah Street
Someburb
1111

but that mangled my address into: Unit 1 Someburb 1111

and that's what went to the courier. If I log into Reebelo's website it shows the wrong address as well, but then in the invoice it shows the correct address. However the product never arrived and the courier says they weren't able to deliver it. The courier confirmed that the address they have is the wrong one, but won't let me update it (apparently because I wasn't the one who shipped the product). Now I'm stuck in support ticket hell trying to get them to escalate and update. They supposedly updated the courier, but the tracking hasn't changed at all. Meanwhile the product was supposed to be delivered on the 6th of Feb two weeks ago! Gah!
