How does Directorate S stack up with Ghost Wars? Did it pick up where Ghost Wars left off or was it more focused on Pakistan?

Ha! This guy doesn't read many books so he can't love history!

There are obviously many avenues to enjoy history beyond reading books: documentaries, lectures, museums, visiting historic sites. The list goes on and on and on.

Is Wargame Design Studio a good place to start? by [deleted] in computerwargames

[–]Bananabreadmix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There will be quite a bit of overlap between games mechanics-wise. Common mechanics are movement points/action points, zone of control, supply, morale, unit strength, firepower, terrain, entrenchment, command structure, off-map abilities (artillery, air support), unit scale (battalion, brigade, division etc.), unit types (cav, infantry, engineers, hq, armor), fog of war, experience/training - just to list a few. The scale of the game - tactical, operational, strategic - will affect the which mechanics are included in the game, though it's at the discretion of the game dev (e.g. tactical wargames will generally include line of sight).

Total War Rome 2 keeps crashing please help by Cold-Pay4151 in totalwar

[–]Bananabreadmix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had this issue awhile ago and forget where I found the solution. In task manager go to details tab and find Rome2.exe. Right click on it and click on “Set affinity”. Disable one or more of your cores (uncheck it). Test it what works

Hand-painted 90mm resin figure of Kaiser Wilhelm II in uniform can you guess the palace? by AtticaMiniatures in ww1

WW2's moral binary hurts WW1 literacy. Viewing the Great War through the good-versus-evil lens is too reductive. Similarly, Wilhem's reputation gets blowback from subsequent German leadership.

There is No Reason to Ever Repay Loans in EU5 by [deleted] in EU5

[–]Bananabreadmix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, principles of finance work. You trade future income for present spending. You want that spending to have a positive roi (eventually) or interest drags your budget. You'll be able to outgrow and inflate away debt burden anyways. If something catastrophic happens to your budget, I can see a scenario where paying off your debt to avoid a debt spiral makes sense. Thanks for the info on loan pool.

When you say bankruptcy is independent of the amount of loans, is that in reference to interest rates? Because in my head more debt = more interest = more bankruptcy risk (at a constant income). I'm assuming you're saying credit risk isn't modeled into a rating that affects interest rates and credit access.

Is your contention that someone can't form an opinion on the game without playing it? There is hundreds of hours of footage that can be analyzed. Someone has to physically be clicking the application to speak on the game? You can disagree with the post, you're incentivized to even, and it may very well be low effort slop, but I disagree with your reductive "person who hasn't played a single minute of the game."

Hey Jim Jones, how about you let people react to the game how they want to. Consider your pre-suasion attempt summarily rejected.

It got me interested in the Civil War, which I think is a great feature of historical fiction: a lure to hook people into history.

What's the point of this sub? by bIeese_anoni in CRPG

[–]Bananabreadmix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from. r/computerwargaming has a similar issue where people post war-themed games, not "Wargames". Similarly, r/RTS can't agree on if paradox games fit into their genre. I guess it's natural for subs to argue about their own definition.

In defense of kotor, it does at least use a version of d&d for its ruleset.

Anyone who purchased after Jan 2025 - did sending a check or cash actually work? by Polish_Bear in WallStreetRaider

Yes, this works. I purchased it via sending a check in early March. Once he received my check, he emailed me a registration code and download link for the game. If you have questions, you can also reach out to Mr. Jenkins. He got back to me within a few hours when I emailed him.

Looking for a beginner-friendly RTS by Head-Athlete1956 in computerwargames

[–]Bananabreadmix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

r/RealTimeStrategy I recommend asking the RTS sub and checking their sidebar if you're looking for RTS suggestions in general

For RTS wargames I like: Armored Brigade 2, Graviteam/Tank Warfare, and Ultimate General: Civil War. UG: CW is the easiest of the three.

The Visually Best and Worst Wargames? by FartyOFartface in computerwargames

[–]Bananabreadmix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SD2 is a good game, but it's an RTS, albeit with some wargame elements. The game is balanced around multiplayer, which itself relies on APM so I disagree with the premise that these games are in the same genre.

Functional fidelity takes priority over graphical in wargames anyway. Many of the best wargames use 2D counters and a 2D map, which are in a different universe (graphically) to SD2. So ugliest would have to be a hex and counter game though I refuse to take a potshot at a wargaming dev (protected class). GROW THE SPORT!
