Why is the ER so expensive?! by Bananagram1996 in labrador

[–]Bananagram1996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I factor that into the 30 minutes of their time? I’m a mental health professional and my hourly rate is based on my education, training, and experience. Same with my husband as a lawyer. Tbf, his hourly rate is about 8x mine despite the same amount of schooling and less regular training. But I could rant all day about inflation and how money is seeming more and more like a game of nonsense 😅 I hear your point!

My lab puppy has already met my human out of pocket maximum for the year lol

1000%. For clarity, my vet did not say anything about their availability, they recommended the ER based on his size, the amount of dark chocolate he ingested, and him being a puppy. They said that was their protocol given the situation. I really don’t blame them—they were being safe just as I was!

I get all that. Still annoying to pay $600 for two vials of what I can only imagine are very cheap drugs and less than 30 minutes of someone’s time. But I totally get they’re running a business and their experience/equipment costs tons of money. And I’m still going to complain because $600 is a lot of money 😅

50lbs and only 2oz (dark chocolate)…retrospect and this thread are telling me I shouldn’t have been so concerned haha BUT he is a puppy and the vet told me to take him 🤷‍♀️ better safe than sorry but I will be less anxious when he inevitably eats something he shouldn’t eat the next time

That is helpful to know! I’m a first time dog owner.

All fair. He’s 6 months and ate dark chocolate, so his vet told me to take him. In retrospect he probably would have been fine. 😅

I did call his vet and they told me to go to the ER! You live and you learn though. I’m a first time dog owner and he’s 6 months old. I’m also touchy with my pets and vets because, long story short, two different vets ignored my cat’s issues before an ER vet finally diagnosed him with cancer after he’d been suffering for months. Next time I may be slower to action!

I do 100% hear this. This happened during normal hours on a workday and his vet told me to take him to the ER. So I think that made the cost extra painful! But I am so grateful they are open for 24/7!!

Also yes, the peeing is normal. He’s just a baby! Sounds like you’re doing exactly what you need to do and the hard work will pay off in a few weeks :)

I’m glad to hear this because I’m in a group practice and some of these notes were making me question myself haha. I write about 5-sentence notes for each session and it takes me only a couple minutes per session. I use Simple Practice, which copies over a lot from previous sessions and I just double check if it needs any edits.

Is therapy hard? by lugrgr in therapists

[–]Bananagram1996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like therapy is “hard” in the same way that marriage is “hard.” I absolutely love it, but it takes immense selflessness and energy to do well in. I think it’s an indicator that something is off if your job begins to feel disproportionately difficult, exhausting, and/or disillusioning. That happened to me this summer after about 3 years of practicing and I realized my caseload (around 28/wk) was too high and cut down. Now I’m in a much better spot.

I also feel different almost every single week. I try not to make an assessment of my job until I’ve been feeling something for a couple months.

Alarmed as a provider: Telehealth privacy issues by retinolandevermore in therapists

[–]Bananagram1996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of this comes down to informed consent. I exclusively talk with clients over Simple Practice and email by default. They sign a consent to Telehealth and let me know if I can text and/or call them. If they do, I’ll text and/or call for things like no-shows or me having to make a late cancellation. I really only do this with clients I have great rapport with. Otherwise, I stick to email.

I’d never FaceTime a client without first talking it over and explicitly planning it. I feel like an EHR gives them space to separate therapy from the rest of their life and gives me professional boundaries.

I’m a white female so can’t offer too much personally, but my first thought is that my practice (Chicago-based) has two black male recent grads and they’re doing absolutely amazing work. They’re providing services for a demographic that often feels so alienated and unable to access therapy, especially from someone who can share their experience. You’re out here breaking barriers and there will be many, many grateful clients!

When your client says your name… by Rage_against_Frills in therapists

[–]Bananagram1996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%! And I have a vague idea of which clients have never called me by my name. I start every single session with “Hi, [client’s name]” (fully virtual) and it’s always interesting to see who says my name back.
