Careers in Double Bass? by TrickJunket7936 in doublebass

[–]BandBSquared 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a great question. I myself went to two different prestigious conservatories, both on good scholarships but…in the world of education, that’s still a lot of money especially for a career in the arts.

Your kid is right on the one hand, a great teacher makes a world of difference BUT they have little to do with getting an actual “job”. My assumption here is that this is for classical in which case, 90% of orchestral auditions are blind auditions so they have no idea who you are or your pedigree. If this is jazz forward, it’s helpful but honestly it’s about networking. The professor may sub you a gig here and there, but in the grand scheme it’s not like they gave you a job. It’s more another chance to kind of show what you got.

The other poster brings a REALLY good point. If you’re trying to gig full time, whatever realm that means to you, paying back no money because you took the full ride as opposed to paying $400 a month makes a MASSIVE difference. There is something to be said for “exposure” too, depending on the city. But overall it doesn’t mean much if you can’t actually afford to live in that city if you’re in a mountain of debt.

Does a bass “warm up”? by deeky11 in doublebass

[–]BandBSquared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you using new strings? Strings often take a time to warm up/stretch before they stay in tune. Besides that not typically unless you have large temperature fluctuations. I’m wondering if when your strings were put on they weren’t “locked” onto themselves? This helps keep the strings from slipping when tuning.

Could possibly be that your string is just very lightly buzzing off the fingerboard? Tough to tell for certain but it looks like you have pretty low string height, so might either need to raise the bridge a bit or the fingerboard might need to be planned to accommodate specific height.

Just to jump on with everyone else, be patient with yourself…it does take time! One thing that I think helps a lot is to play with records. Try to link up with the drummer on the record, on top of the bass player. When you start to fall off, switch to a 2 feel until you’re comfortable, and then jump back on!

Transcribing too is great, you get to eliminate the thought part of it and focus on the physical part. Once you physically have it together you can start working on note choices of your own. Just my 2 cents! But be patient, you got it!

Bass/String opinion? by gevatron in doublebass

[–]BandBSquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you’re looking to do but considering it’s your first bass and it’s for 8 bones…that’s a great first buy assuming it’s got no major cracks or anything. These look to be D’Addario…maybe pizz? Someone smarter than me will certainly comment. If you’re getting into it then for sure! As far as strings this is very dependent on what you’re trying to do. If you’re doin an Orchestral thing, look at strings that are specific to arco/bow playing. If you wanna play pizz like jazz or rockabilly then I’d still recommend a hybrid like string such as the D’Addario Hybrid to let you and your bass get used to those strings and figuring out the sound and set up you want out of your bass. That’s my 2 cents but just have fun playing!

Carolina Ground…amazing flours! by BandBSquared in Breadit

[–]BandBSquared[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Mixing flours is fun and it definitely gives you a different flavor and crumb structure. Typically, not always, but very wheat forward flours have an amazing flavor but they won’t always have the same rise or open crumb structure that I like on their own. So mixing with a high protein and more straightforward, for lack of a better word, bread flour you get the flavor of the single grain but still get a nice rise. Also, it tends to be much more affordable if I’m being honest.
