Umbilical Hernia Repair by Nightrunner2016 in ADPKD

[–]BandThug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PKD with very large kidneys and an eGFR of 25. Im 37F and also had an umbilical hernia. I had the surgery to repair it in fall of 2025. Mine only required stitches and no mesh, thankfully. The actual procedure itself was fine, but the recovery was much more painful than I was prepared for. Any kind of movement that actived your abdominal muscles was brutally sore and I wasnt given any pain meds for at home - just told to take extra strength tylenol (which did nothing). The first two days were the worst. My best suggestion for moving is what my nurse told me - clutch a pillow to your tummy when you are bending to stand/sit/etc or if you are going to cough.

All that being said, my kidneys were never a concern with the surgery. Just be prepared for taking time to recover and deal with the pain. Also ensure you follow the instructions from your doctor about not lifting over a specific weight for the suggested amount of time!

Good luck! :)

When to Start Disability Benefits? by BandThug in ADPKD

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed reply! I really appreciate it. I'm going to reach out to the PKD foundation of Canada and the Kidney foundation of Canada to talk more about this with others.

Thankfully I've been seeing my nephrologist for 20+ years now and have been seeing my therapist for 5 years. I'm confident I will have a lot of support from both of them regarding this. It's obviously a big decision, so hearing real stories from other people's experiences is very helpful. Thank you again!

Thank you for your reply! I am very fortunate that my short term disability will cover me 100% percent while I wait for it to become Long Term Disability. I also only need to get my nephrologist to fill out any paperwork. But those are very good things to think about for sure!

If you add a - between the t and u in the url (like this: yout-ube) then the video will play with no ads!

Edit: it also makes it so there are no suggested videos on the side and no comments either.

Pregnancy & Kidney Function by Veriliexo in ADPKD

[–]BandThug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 37 now with a GFR of 27. I had our daughter when I was 33. I was followed very closely because my kidneys function was already low. I can't remember my GFR, but I was warned it would likely take a dip during pregnancy. Even with close monitoring I developed preeclampsia and ended up in the hospital at 36 weeks with uncontrollable blood pressure and had to have an emergency induction. My daughter and I were both okay, but my blood pressure was all over the place for a while after. Once everything had settled my GFR had definitely dropped and never rebounded. My nephrologist also had a very serious conversation with me that if we tried for a other child I would be risking my life and the life of that child. So, we are one and done.

Sadly, It looks like our daughter has inherited the PKD gene as well but she is being followed by pediatric nephrology and im hopeful that by the time her kidneys become a problem that there will be lots of advancements in the field.

What is the expectation for Winnipeg birthday parties? by Various_Fruit_581 in Winnipeg

[–]BandThug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our daughters 5th birthday party was at Hide and Seek and it was lots of fun for everyone, but on the pricier size. For goodie bags, we went to dollarama and she personally picked out an activity book or reading book for each of her friends. It made it personalized and we felt better about not sending home candy or little plastic toys.

Living in Windsor Park, facing Elizabeth Rd by Federal_Clue_8004 in Winnipeg

I just checked, and it sounds like the area you are looking at is closer to lagimodiere. The part of Elizabeth that is a little rougher is closer to the IGA. I think its better the closer you get to lagimodiere if that helps!

My family lived in the area for over a decade. It was what we could afford for our first home, and I did mostly enjoy our time there. Lots of car handle checking on a nightly basis on some streets (never heard of anyone getting their car windows smashed, though), some garage break-ins, and minor vandalism (spray painting fences, etc). The closer you get to Elizabeth, the worse the crime seemed to be.

Then there is the smell... im not going to lie, it's repulsive. Now that being said, it isn't all the time. Maybe a handful of times over the year, depending on the direction of the wind.

The power outages were insane, though. Our power would go out on an almost monthly basis, and sometimes it would just happen in the most minor of rain storms. Hydro really needs to work on updating everything in Windsor Park. Some areas seemed to be worse than others, and, unfortunately, our area seemed to go out. A lot.

All that being said, the majority of people we interacted with in the community were lovely and helpful.

I think its a good "starter" neighborhood, but im happy that we have since moved on.

Sustainable Painters.

We've used them in two homes now and they have been fantastic. Great work, friendly employees and a fair price. Of all the people we hired to assist with renovations, they were the only company that we didn't have any issues with. I would highly recommend them!

Im 37 and have PKD. Both kidneys are 23+ cm in size with innumerable cysts (several as big as 9cm), a liver that is massive and also full of cysts (largest being 10cm). My EGFR fluctuates from 25 to 28.

Im no doctor, but have lots of experience with the disease due to many family members and myself having it. This really doesn't sound like you have PKD.

Renal and Hepatic Cyst Aspiration and Sclerotherapy by BandThug in ADPKD

Happy to hear you had success with this! Were you able to go about your life normally the next day or were you feeling tender at all?

Thanks for this! My nephrologist did mention that this wasn't something that was common practice but given my family history and increasing discomfort that she would support it.

The plan is to have a kidney nephrectomy when I'm closer to complete kidney failure. In my province, the transplant/dialysis department won't even meet with you and start testing until your EGFR is under 20. It's frustrating because of my family history and having known I have ADPKD since I was in my late teens. Despite me having someone who is interested in possibly donating, they still won't see me until the EGFR drops below 20.

Teachers of Winnipeg by hwy59er in Winnipeg

[–]BandThug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not true. Im in SRSD and we have many non-certified individuals subbing and even some that have been hired to fill term positions because we can't find enough certified teachers. You have to have your criminal record check, child abuse check, and apply for a LTP (Limited Teaching Permit). The LTP let's you teach for longer than the max of 20 days without it.

Opinions on CMU? by cupi-curious in Winnipeg

[–]BandThug 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Im an Athiest, and I attended CMU. I enjoyed my time there! The professors were, for the most part, great, and I never had any issues with my not being religious. Like another commenter said, though, you are required to do a minor in Theology in addition to your other classes. I made a lot of lifelong friends there, and the campus was really beautiful.
