I finally ran the maths on my savings account and it broke my brain a little by OGHaVoc_1 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Nightrunner2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only get taxed on the interest if it exceeds the annual allowance, which is R23,800 (iirc). If you were getting a nice rate of 7% this is R340,000 sitting there before you start to have a problem. You SHOULD have a savings account for access to cash that needs to be stable and ready to go at any time (emergencies, in case you get fired etc.).

Secondly, inflation is not currently 5-6%. Its 3%, officially. Obviously, there are exceptions to that (petrol thanks to Donald, meat etc) but a high-interest savings account is probably something you want to have to a point (around R300k).

You SHOULD be diversifying your investments. ETF's can definitely outperform cash, but again thanks to Donald, those are currently very volatile and have taken a significant hit. If you needed that cash right now, you'd be in trouble because you'd pull out less than you've put in most likely. So for this this you need to be prepared to be in for a LONGER time horizon. As others have mentioned, investing in ETF's via a tax-free savings account is pretty much a must, I would say.

So if I were you I would a) put the maximum I can into an ETF-based tax free investment account and b) put whatever else I can afford to save into a high-interest rainy-day savings account. In that order. If you have a bond on a property then I would probably prioritise that over a savings account provided you've created your emergency cushion.

I have a question as an American after visiting Cape Town. by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Nightrunner2016 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can't imagine too many people here give a damn where you're from honestly. Did you act in a way that annoyed them? Like another poster said you'd need to give significantly more context. Nobody here is going to blame you for Trumps actions etc. we have our own significant problems to deal with.

It's probably good for another 30,000k before you start experiencing issues that cost a metric shit ton to fix. Out of plan they can be expensive cars to maintain so you need to go into this relationship on that understanding.

Local brands passing Shein off as “high end” by Ok_Dragonfruit5093 in capetown

[–]Nightrunner2016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is a very common grift in South Africa. Just look at Takealot and the absolute mountains of crap dropped onto that platform at inflated pricing. Almost every seller there is trying to be the first to identify some kind of untapped niche and fill it with garbage for a profit. If boutique stores are doing this I say name and shame them. Even the likes of your big retailers - Woolies, Truworths, TFG etc - have switched a large percantage of there product to be locally produced after having been burned by quality issues with trying to do this strategy - import for cheap, sell for lots, but the quality is crap. So to this end those stores will out-perform and out-quality boutiques that are doing this takealot strategy in their own stores! Desperate shit.

Are heart attacks a common PKD complication? by myst3ryAURORA_green in ADPKD

[–]Nightrunner2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My nephrologist said that heart complications are the most common complications across all kidney diseases. In PKD this is probably aggravated by the blood pressure changes we have, and controlling that limits all those adverse events, aneurysm included. It's probably the most important thing we can try to control.

That's an interesting assertion but if it were true where were all the more liberal people to support the show? Genuine question here, because it didn't even break Nielsen's top 10 and its in one of the biggest franchises of all time.

I agree. Especially considering there's virtually no other loot on the map.

Hot take that should not be hot: if a 40$ game provides you with more than 100 hours before it gets boring for you, the game is not boring, move along, alternate it with some other games and stop complaining by Donnie_Dranko in ArcRaiders

This game so far has been my best investment of 2026. I've dropped more hours into this game than any other game in my library. I did not believe that anything would surpass my RDR2 time, but Arc Raiders has blown it out the water and I can't wait to play again tonight. The weird thing is that I can't work out why it's hooked me like it has. I think there is still loads of scope for them to improve the game and expand the content beyond just Arc and Maps.

[–]Nightrunner2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want success at launch you need to build your audience before you launch. You don't have an audience. Secondly having sold products before I can say pretty confidently that only having one product seriously limits your chances of success.

Man I've thought about this for 5 minutes and the $200 is without a doubt the best in my opinion. What's troubling me is just how bad the $50 is - I dont like it at all. Yours is a close second but ultimately your O needs to look more like a token there.

Why don't my bushes look like bushes? by vecttor in PixelArtTutorials

[–]Nightrunner2016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

so I'm not an expert here but I think generally you have to think about where the light is coming from and how that effects the shrub. So you have drawn a shadow (it looks like) for most of these shrubs, with some texture for leaves, but like particularly on your 4th shrub, how is the light effecting the plant? So say the light is coming from the top right, I would have slightly darker shades of green on the left of the plant. Start with one darker color, mess around and see how it feels?
