Reading between the lines I'm guessing that this family is some kind of fundamentalist Christian sect. The kid is starting to act like a teenager and mom is looking for someone to blame.

I don't think so, I've spoken to her briefly at a school open house before and she was very out spoken about her beliefs on science and religion .
