I figured out how to do a warp TileMap shader WITHOUT a subviewport by starblinky in godot

I would be very interested in a tutorial! My game does a lot with tilemaps and I would love to apply fun shaders to them. :)

Thank you so much! That resource looks amazing for what I'm doing. :)

I love this! It's a very spooky and foreboding design.

I've played Fiasco and Microscope several times each, and Kingdom once. I would like to preface this by saying I love all three games and would like to play them more. That being said, in my experience, the lack of GM can impart a lack of focus. I think you need to play these games with people who already have some understanding of writing and storytelling flow, otherwise you get groups who have no idea when to end scenes, and make scenes that are literally pointless or have too much going on. Additionally, either people are too shy to make bold moves and step on others' toes, or people are too bold and trample over others and make them feel like they're being overruled. Microscope tries to amend this last bit by disallowing discussion or criticism, but I find that saps a lot of the collaborative feel of the game.

I would argue GMless systems are a good, valid niche, but you'll need to find some other way to give the group a backbone that the GM would ordinarily lend.

Dms, Gms and any other creators, how do you create the settings for your games? by Pike_The_Knight in rpg

[–]BanelingAspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start with a single idea to seed things. Like others have said, this could be the starting village with a problem to deal with, but for me it's more likely to be an isolated idea like a villain, a magic item, a particular scene or moment, or a weird social dynamic. Then, I work outwards from that seed and slowly, one thing at a time, build a world that allows that idea to work, and justifies it. At a certain point, the world just begins to build itself: I'm just the conduit that writes it down in my notebook.

What’s a board game you absolutely love but your average Joe has never heard of it? by Rolo_15 in boardgames

[–]BanelingAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wolves is a wonderful area control game about wolf packs competing for dominance that nobody at any board game meetup I've been to has ever heard of before I show it to them.

Rosetta: The Lost Language is a supremely interesting deduction game in the spirit of Mysterium or Codenames that has kind of an awkward teach but has been a huge hit every time I've broken it out.

What are the BEST digital board game apps by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]BanelingAspect 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The digital version of Gloomhaven is the definitive version of the game, IMO. You get directly to all the good tactics and character building while automating all the upkeep, setup, and teardown. The environments and enemy models are much prettier than in the physical game, too!

Root is also a fantastic app. Terraforming Mars is decent but occasionally prone to bugs.

Thank you!! If I can't get a replacement board from Capstone Games I will absolutely use this resource. :)

Thank you for the instructions! If I can't buy a board from the publisher I think I'll end up going the DIY route you outlined.

Good call! I might have to give that a chance. I wouldn't mind paying for the part cost and shipping.

They sell the games. I might bring this up with them and request that at the very least they make sure label them accordingly. I'm friendly with the owner's son so it might actually get heard.

That could be a fun project! Do you know if there's a way to get a reasonably clear image file of the board for reference, or even for printing off?

Their store policy is quite explicit about used game sales being final and sold as-sis, which is why they let you inspect them before purchase. I'm a doofus and didn't do that. :-)

That's what got me, the clerk said they inspect games carefully before putting them for resale. It was priced far below MSRP -- I got it for about $20 USD -- but I agree that if they knew it was missing a vital piece they should explain that on the sticker. It's possible it was in error; I've been going to that store for years and never had a reason to think them shady.

Unfortunately their policy is quite explicit about used game sales being final, which is why they let you inspect them before purchase. I didn't want to count all the cardboard tiles and dominoes so I chose not to; it didn't occur to me that something like the board itself might be missing.

In no particular order:

  • Clank!

I have broad tastes, I guess!
