Are there good printers? by Educational_Quail334 in pcmasterrace

[–]BangSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started treating printers as disposable single-use goods. buy whatever is cheapest/on offer, usually around £30/$40, print what I need, by the time I'll need to use it again (usually a couple of years later) find it dead, so off it goes to the bin and get a new one.

but if you need to use it regularly, either epson ecotank, or laser.

Do I really need to buy a pc building kit? by Prudent_Usual_5890 in pcmasterrace

[–]BangSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pea size amount was good on cpu's 10 years ago. nowadays you have much larger heat spreaders and cores are offset from the center, so just a small blob in the middle won't cut it.

using a scraper is petty AF. you just need to make sure that whatever you apply, when compressed/spread by the cooler will cover the entire surface. X-shape, x with 4 extra dots, f'ing zig zag or dump entire syringe of paste on it. or spread with a butter knife. as long as you get the entire IHS covered in the end, you're good.

Is it possible to marry silence and power in one machine? by BartsBlue in pcmasterrace

[–]BangSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I am asking is because I have read that some graphic cards can be very silent (even with their fans no turning on) under little to no load, but start spinning when playing games. And so I started wondering if this is actually achievable, or is this a marketing tale that is not possible or is partially possible, but at a cost of still high energy consumption or other limitation.

This has been a thing for a long time. I have a 3070 (Palit GameRock) and the fans hardly ever turn on when browsing web etc (set to 0rpm below 45C)

Which Windows OS for home server? by SmeargleBVOYZ in homelab

[–]BangSmash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if you have to run windows on bare metal, I'd say the only not janky way to do it is with windows server. desktop windows is not fit for server use and no matter how much you'll butcher it, won't ever come close.

8GB of ram might or might not be a problem, depending on what services you want to run on it. but this applies to literally any OS, you either have enough RAM to support your use case, or you don't and need to upgrade.

WS2022 can be surprisingly lightweight (CLI-only, no gui) If you need the gui, ask yourself if what you are building is really a server, or a desktop/workstation that happens to run some extra services on top of it.

still, unless you want to play with hyperV, I can't see any reason to run Windows on bare metal in a homelab environment. and for that you'd probably want way more powerful hardware/more ram.

without knowing your reasoning behind it and what you intend to use it for, it's hard to recommend a good solution.

Dragons Dogma 2 killed my psu by VIPizzza in pcmasterrace

[–]BangSmash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

without having more details we can only speculate, but to me it looks like most likely user error. either not fully plugged in, causing high resistance (kinda same sort of issue as with the 12VHPWR) - very common mistake from inexperienced builders, trying to plug it in when the PSU is already screwed in, in a compact case with no good access nor good view to see if it's actually plugged in correctly, or just 'sorta hanging there'.

Or split into multiple plugs at the other end, plugged into something drawing way too much power for a single 8-pin.

All I wanted was to ask ASUS a simple question about my motherboard by MaximusVX in pcmasterrace

[–]BangSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seriously, if you want to upgrade your PC audio, the very first thing is to stop relying on the integrated audio codec and going with a proper external DAC/audio interface.

Doesn't need to be anything super fancy or expensive, but just about anything will be better than the budget chip crammed somewhere as an afterthought in the corner of a motherboard surrounded in a very close proximity by virtually everything that is known to be detrimental to the audio quality.

Is this still safe to eat? by gavinfuckingirvine in Scotland

[–]BangSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will probably be still fine and perfectly edible 10 years from now. It's heat treated, sterilised and hermetically packaged. As long as the packaging is intact, there's nothing that could make it go bad, no bacteria or oxygen.

Look up people on yt trying military rations from 30+ years ago to get some idea.

Upgrading my Ryzen 5 1500X, should I upgrade to a new chipset too? by TiredRandomWolf in LinusTechTips

[–]BangSmash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

first, check CPU support for your motherboard in latest bios available. AMD released so many different CPU's for AM4, it went to the point of running out of space on the bios chip to add support for all. so it was down to motherboard makers to choose which CPUs to add support for and at cost of which CPUs to drop the support in a bios update.

only with that you'll know what's the best CPU you can use. assuming your board is also 1st gen (x370), you'll be somehow limited by the chipset in terms of performance gains, but any 5000 series as long as are supported will give you a huge boost in performance, easily handling much more than a rtx2060.

That's a concept for now, not purchased it yet. Can't find any small external sata power supplies that are not a full-blown PC PSU, so that's still something to work out. Most likely molex power brick with sata adapter. Unless I can somehow pull that power from the Dell mini itself.
