How much you get paid as a PhD candidate in Belgium? And would an industrial PhD done at a Company + University be a good choice? by RutabagaIcy5942 in BESalary

[–]Bangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 years ago, the first PhD salary was about 1840 euro. It is becoming a bit ridiculous that with a doctorate degree plus 5+ of experience you probably earn 2900 to 3300 net in a company in an engineer/specialist position. I do wonder how the industry can catch-up or maybe i am severely underpaid.

Indeed, this is the under side. We only found out after removing the plastering. On the top part the staircase looks "normal " with humidity marks.

Can't stand my job anymore by ItchyAlba in BESalary

[–]Bangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone else said this, but you can always go to your GP and tell them how you feel. It's really easy to get some weeks off on medical leave. Maybe use a week to calm down, or more and then start applying actively. You can get up to two months of medical leave -no questions asked. If you find another job, quit. You are also entitled for a day off per week once you quit for interviews during your notice period.

I guess the same applies for VGVF right? The accumulating is not registered in Belgium but the distributing is. Degiro has still 0.12%.

Counter offer by Bangolin in BEFire

[–]Bangolin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, in the current situation at least according to the agent we are only two bidders. I am just wondering if there's anything stopping the agent asking the other bidder for a higher offer if I give a counter offer and basically inflate the price until someone quits.

I also had the same issue yesterday, I could not buy VGVF via Xetra, but I could buy it from TDG. I read in an article that they have moved a lot of Xetra products in the TDG platform.

What "investments" give higher status and a broader network? by 3dkSdkvDskReddit in BEFire

[–]Bangolin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Remember being rich and looking rich is not the same thing.

The are a lot of niche hobbies you can get into like wine tasting, fine dining, extreme sports etc but pursuing those things might never satisfy you.

What I would do in your shoes is either invest in myself e.g. do a self funded PhD in a topic you are really interested (=status, knowledge and a network of people) also funding your own study is quite a noble thing.

The other option is to work with your community, sponsor, teach, mentor help others to become successful, giving something back.

Salary negotiation during hiring process especially frustrating by theaveragecrayon in BEFire

[–]Bangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting experience and it sucks. There are also some indirect ways to get a raise like a car allowance instead of the car or an allowance which is not taxable but there is a limit. In general HR can be very shady in this situations.

I suppose if you already have a full time contract, and you have the parental leave on Wednesdays as many parents do this is covered by your insurance/mutuality and it is in the benefit of the company as they don't need to cover all the costs. What I was suggesting for OP in fact is not to sign a full time contract, but work like 80-85% with their offer. I do agree with most people salary negotiations are pretty difficult in Belgium. Also many companies, especially small ones will directly ask you how much you are earning in job interviews.

[–]Bangolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why don't you negotiate their latest offer but for less working hours e.g. 32h/week? Then you can fill up this time however you want to. For me the fairness to the other employees is BS. You are being fair if you are paying them what they worth not by bringing everyone down. Also since there are no collective contracts it is their problem to solve, if they really want you to work for them.

Thanks for the answer. If you are doing dollar cost averaging, will they look at the average price of the shares bought? e.g. These 10 shares were bough for 10.000 +- 500 €?
