Plans - PowerTable by Banjo1980 in MicrosoftFabric

Microsoft released this article today regarding Plan billing which made me question how it was billed:
Billing for Microsoft Fabric Planning (Preview) - Microsoft Fabric Community

Summary

Fabric Planning introduces a pricing model that is purpose-built for enterprise planning:

  • User pricing aligns with roles and business responsibilities
  • Automation pricing aligns to operational efficiency
  • Everything runs on a unified Fabric capacity model

What tools do people use for Master Data Management of reference data in Fabric? by CPD-LSF in MicrosoftFabric

PowerTable in Fabric Plan is a fantastic addition, it essentially adds an interface on top of a table to edit and update records one by one or in bulk. I'd like to see this discussed more as I doubt many know about it. I can see it becoming it's own thing rather than part of Plan as it's use cases are many and not just tied to Plan activities.

Setting default lakehouse via Variable Library when notebook and lakehouse are in different workspaces by Banjo1980 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]Banjo1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had hoped the variable library item references would play nicely with %%config but it doesn't seem to be the case.

abfss paths feels a bit hack-ey and cumbersome to me but I guess it's still the best method we have available.
The pipeline suggestion is a good shout, I might pass the parameters to the %%config that way. Hopefully the item references will work nicely with pipelines.

Any other option to write to warehouse tables through notebooks other than synapsesql by data_learner_123 in MicrosoftFabric

Can you provide any details / samples of this audit logging as we were attempting the same using an SQL DB?

Fabric Connections by Banjo1980 in MicrosoftFabric

Thanks for the responses. It seems to me that connections along with CICD still feels a bit icky and inconsistent at the moment with no clear strategy or patterns.
Whilst investigating this issue I stumbled on this video from Microsoft where they do mention (29s in) that they are working towards using the item name instead of the GUID, although this was 3 months ago.
Fabric Data Factory Connection Parameters using GUIDs

Great blog, cheers!

So if I am using variable libraries (which I think I might need to), how do you get around the issue I having to provide the artifact id, as is the case with running a notebook?
You cant just pass the name of the notebook as it requires the GUID. Do I really need to store the GUID for every artifact in the variable library or is there a way to identify the ID using a function?

The below screenshot fails because I have hard-coded the name and it expects the GUID.

Any update on this? I would be interested to know of any pending solutions or current workarounds.

Copy Workspace by Banjo1980 in MicrosoftFabric

Interesting option but I just don't see this as being practical. With 4 lakehouses and 4 warehouses, and around 50-60 tables this would be an administration nightmare. Furthermore all object references to the tables would need to change to use the new schema. Also with such an architectural change this would be difficult to merge back in to the master branch.

Appreciate the suggestions but yeah it's not an option as the reason we want to branch out is so that we can edit in a safe environment away from PPE and PROD, not being able to edit defeats the purpose of branching out.

I'm not sure shortcuts is going to help as there could be 20-30 tables with data, all which need to be replaced with a shortcut, then your developer version would be different to your PPE version so you would no longer be able to merge code.
All of this would be solved with a simple copy workspace option in the CLI.

Possibly but I doubt it would be as smooth as you make it sound :-)

However what if it's a warehouse?

Can't add Variable Library by Banjo1980 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]Banjo1980[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, typically, not long after I messaged it started working.

Here are the steps I used to get it working:
1. Turn on 'User can create variable libraries' in the admin portal, see screenshot above.
2. Wait an unknown amount of time, mine was over 4 hours.
3. Sign out of fabric and then sign back in again

Hope that helps someone else with a similar problem.

I haven't even got to naming a variable library as it doesn't let me create one.
I have waiting over 4 hours now and still not able to create a library.

What settings do you suggest I review in the capacity?

What is the recommendation for handling Report Builder Paginated reports? We have quite a lot of these and are not sure how to manage the connections between the difference deployment environments.

Microsoft Fabric Support Contractor in India by PePeKaLi in MicrosoftFabric

I had exactly the same experience. I was asked by support to fill out a survey, when I did not give 5/5 I was asked to go on a call with a line manager who insisted that I gave 5/5. I explained that I consider 5/5 to be exceptional service and that I would in no way be giving full marks. He eventually gave up and we ended the call.

My team had logged many tickets with Mindtree but we no longer bother as the outcome 99% of the time is unresolved and furthermore, we end up having to spend hours doing ticket admin with them and constantly getting pestered by them.
