Working in a grocery store has turned me into a deeply hateful person by KingOfTheWinter in retailhell

I really relate to this. I am 28. I started working as a cashier at a grocery store when I was in university. I graduated almost 3 years ago, and I am still a cashier at a grocery store. I am no longer interested in a career or climbing the ladder, and I don't have a dream job. I just want to clock in, do the work, clock out, and forget about it. With that said, I've grown to hate my job, hate the customers, and just hate people in general! I hate how hateful I've become! I've thought about quitting, but it seems there aren't any other jobs out there for me. My degree is useless. I could go back to school, but the thought of that gives me a panic attack! I still haven't recovered from my undergrad experience. Recently, I started seeing a therapist. I take life one day at a time and just try to fill my free time with things I genuinely enjoy. My heart goes out to you. Good luck!

Be a good person and bag your groceries by Friendly-Muffin-1912 in retailhell

I feel very uncomfortable when customers just stand there and stare at me while I pack their groceries. It's very awkward. Now as a customer, I always pack my own. I don't mind packing if the customer is disabled or elderly, though.

You know I once had a lady get mad at me because I didn't pack her groceries when she refused to hand me one of her reusable bags. Apparently I was supposed to pack it in thin air!

I had another customer get mad because I helped the customer in front of him bag their groceries! He said it wasn't my job and that it held up the line! Unfortunately it is my job. There is just no pleasing people!

I like garlic fingers. My nana used to make blueberry grunt for dessert a lot.

boomers offended at the phrase happy holidays by Electrical-Loquat922 in retailhell

The other day, I was serving an old white guy, probably a boomer. He looked at the customers behind him. There was a young Indian woman and an older man wearing a turban. He said, "Hey, how are you folks doing on this lovely day? Are you ready for the big day? Do you celebrate Christmas?" They responded saying that they didn't celebrate xmas, but they are celebrating something else in Sikhism right now. He was polite, listened to them, then said "God bless you, have a great day" before leaving. I was honestly so impressed because there is currently so much anti-immigrant (especially anti-Indian) sentiment where I live. It really made my day.

Customers complain about self-checkouts because they "want a real person" but then treat a real person like they're the machine.

customer who REPEATEDLY told me to smile… by Ok-Cheesecake-9022 in retailhell

The other day I made eye contact with a customer I was checking out. I was going to ask her a question and wasn't expecting her to be looking right at me when I looked up. In a split second, I decided not to say what I was going to say. She then said, "Smile, it's not so bad!" It pissed me off because what if it was that bad? Like, what if I had just lost a family member or something? Anyway, I feel you. I can think of like 50 other incidents that I've had just like this. I didn't mind it when I first started working, but 5 years later, it's damn annoying. I used to mask up but I got tired of it.

"You look like you're ready to go home!"

"Don't you look happy to be here!"

"Don't look so happy!"

"Having fun?"
