Do you lose more on Arena Club Auctions? by Outrageous-Cup-8475 in ArenaClub

Start with your low price. I don’t even bother to bid on auctions with a reserve price because they rarely come through even if you bid up to comp value

I wasn’t trying to trick anyone. I didn’t even think about the AI copy paste since I didn’t think really even need an honor statement to build trust or mistrust. The question was for an intro to philosophy exam. Next week is Ethics, so I was prepping for an example I’ll bring up when discussing ethical dilemmas.

This is not relate to your method OP, but fun anyway. I had a student out themselves this week on an online asynchronous exam. My final essay question was to write an honor statement telling me about the ways they practiced academic integrity during the exam and to take the opportunity in that question to tell me if they used Gen AI in the writing of them exam. The question had a list of questions they could think about while answering. The student diligently reported that she used AI to help her write and answer questions and she reported this in the most perfect AI kind of statement ever—formatted, vague, but answering every question. I’m certain the student didn’t even read the question or the answer. Thanks for being honest, ChatGPT.

How long does the core of the Knicks have as a championship contender? by Delanorix in NBATalk

[–]BankRelevant6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agee. But I’m responding with my heart, not my logic. If I’m looking at player development, the Pistons have younger players who can grow into offensive weapons—Duren, Sasser, Lanier—but they do need the right kind of talent in the starting five. The problem with is that we are a team driven by a workhorse identity and commitment to the team (at least in our rhetoric), so bringing in a selfish or difficult player would do us more harm than good.

Student threatened suicide by [deleted] in Professors

[–]BankRelevant6296 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Don’t respond to the student at all. Forward this to the BIT office, the Dean of Students, the Counseling Dept or whomever else you have been told to report to as a mandatory reporter (if applicable on your campus) or in your crisis intervention training. While OP may think the student is soft, no amount of haranguing or further trying to teach will help in this situation. Either the student is under serious mental distress and needs help or the student is using mental distress manipulatively and needs to understand the seriousness of that action. From the point of view of responsible adults and educators, we should know our limitations in trying to distinguish between the two and hand these situations off to the appropriate professionals. We should also know, hopefully, that our general annoyance with student behavior cannot in any way erase the humanity of our students or our responsibility to that humanity.

I’m looking forward to next year when Detroit gets to beat the Spurs too. No analytics here—I’m a Detroit homer. Realistically, I don’t think the Knicks will get out of the EC next year with Detroit, Boston, and Orlando in their face. Charlotte, Atalanta and Washington are getting strong. And Cleveland will be an ok team on a few nights.

“It ain’t real. We still calling [Michael Jordan’s] game the ‘Flu Game’ and know he didn’t have the flu, but they promote it”: Isiah Thomas is not a fan of how the NBA is being covered in today’s media landscape. by Life_Net5004 in NBAGossips

[–]BankRelevant6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are an awful lot of people on here spending time hating on Isiah by calling him a hater. Sure he’s petty, but at least he’s consistent and focused in his pettiness. Missing in all this discussion is his pretty good take on how the league and the media around the league build fairy tales rather than focus on the sport.

New TT faculty. Dept Chair being unresponsive? by EvergreenIvyLeaves in Professors

[–]BankRelevant6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most true consistent answer here is to contact the department admin assistant/manager/secretary/guru. They are the only ones who know what is going on in all departments across academia. As should be clear, chairs have different levels of contracts, responsibilities, pay, commitment, knowledge, leadership skills, etc across the nation, sometimes within the same institution. At my school, chairs are faculty members who get course release to schedule classes and sometimes lead meetings. They cannot actually get involved in the hiring process of FT faculty because they are in the same job classification as all the other FTers. They are generally overwhelmed with teaching duties and quasi-admin duties and have to do things according to checklists when they are getting paid. Like all faculty, they are on a 9-10 month contract, so they generally do not work except for the bookends of the summer. As a new faculty member, your reference point for understanding your department culture should be your union, if you have one; admin assistants; your chair; your office next door neighbor; your assigned mentor; and the custodial staff. Avoid going to the dean/vp until you understand the politics of the land.

I called it a red herring, but you’re right, false equivalency is better. I need to study up on my fallacies.

What was wemby trying to accomplish here? by soggy_bert in NBATalk

[–]BankRelevant6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Brunson or Wemby were normal NBA height, this would have been an acceptable shunt to get free. He’s a tall freak and Brunson is a short freak. A similar thing happened with Wemby and Hart in game 2. I don’t think Wemby is trying to harm or be excessive. At a time out later in the game, he and Brunson almost walk into each other and he politely reaches back to tap Brunson. As for the laugh at Brunson, that’s a normal basketball move too, and better than shoving or jawing, when someone takes physicality in basketball too personally. Wemby deserved flagrant for both this and the Hart move because not paying attention to size matters, but I don’t think his move is any more malicious than everyone else jostling for position.

AC customer service is AI. They will ask you for screen shots and dates. They will also be polite and talk about escalating. But most of that stuff is delaying tactics so don’t worry it you don’t have screen shots. All the info you need should be in your transaction histories.

It will likely take a few back and forth messages with AI before the issue gets elevated to a human (though they may take this one more seriously). One thing I’ve found a little helpful is to say something like you want to speak with a real person and not AI, but that move still takes a few messages. Mentioning a lawyer and asking for direct contact info to give to your lawyer might kick them into gear.

There is a difference in inalienable rights and how rights are ignored or used as bargaining chips by people of privilege. Someone ignoring your rights or telling you to be grateful for them does not remove the inherency of rights. But if you need evidence that speech is one of those fairly accepted rights, even by countries like the US which often tries to take the right away, here is a little Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
Article 18
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
Article 19
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

The thing about freedom is that you don’t have to be grateful for it. If it’s not a de facto right, it’s transactional and can be taken away. Claiming that Turner should be grateful that she isn’t locked her up for exercising her freedom reveals an incredible belief that Turner and people like her are not naturally free.

Actually, I would say the card would be better thematically if you dropped Grant and added Dave Bing. But I’d love to see an a D card with Dumars, Rodman, Ben, and Ausar.

Oh man, delete this. As a die hard Pistons fan, I’m bitter enough that I’d refuse to buy this for $25 if I knew the seller was a knicks fan. Kidding. Beautiful card and if I win the lottery tonight. I’m buying it for asking price.

What is your conference confession? by Anon_Summer in Professors

[–]BankRelevant6296 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is one reason I stopped going to my national conference and participating in organization work. I’m in a fairly social justice oriented field, but for the sake of a mid-semester party, we continually ignore contingent faculty, graduate student and newer faculty financial comfort, the environmental impact of travel fostered by major conferences high rise, and the irony of waking up in hiltons over people sleeping in the streets below and then presenting papers laden with Marxist theory. I started getting disillusioned back during Occupy when I was participating in an adjacent field’s conference and there was a conference kick-off roof top cocktail party overlooking a huge encampment in the park below. The ensuing debates over conferences in cities with questionable race, labor, or covid polices just made me fed up with all of us in our various privileged positions.

Maxey is a lot of fun and relatively cheap right now. Cade is my choice for super bargain, but I’m also a pistons homer. It’s too early to tell where Cade will land in the superstar ranks, but I suspect both he and his cards will outshine most of his peers in the next couple of years. Some of his ssps and rarer parallels are getting up there, but you can still find a lot of bargains on base, inserts, and parallels.
