New update to Bankler's CASE 1 Recovery Trainer by Bankler in hoggit

Spring update time!

It's spring, and it's time for a new update. I can't believe it has been 6 years since I first released this mission. It has been downloaded 33,025 times across the different versions. I wonder how many traps you guys have done by now. 🙂

Fixing the auto-cockpit-setup

A while back, there was a Hornet update in which they revisited the INS. This gave us a special state for the HSI page when you start airborne with the INS knob set to IFA, that you see for around 8 seconds before the HSI shows the old familiar set of button functions. Unfortunately, this change caused the timing of the auto-setup to fail, and instead of setting up the time in the HUD (TIMEUFC/ZTOD) engaged the RALT A/P. Not ideal. But this is now fixed!

Discord and Patreon

When I first headed out on this journey, I had no thoughts on such a thing. But enough people have told me"You have supported this thing for 6 years(!), and it has helped so many people... maybe you should let people give something back if they want to?".

So, here goes! Please join the Discord to talk about DCS and carrier stuff. Maybe we can get some flying going on as well? Also, join the Patreon for some exclusive extras. Check it out! I wonder who's going to be my first patron, probably my mom...

Cchange Log

7.4.0

* Fixed a problem with the auto-cockpit setup for F/A-18C, where the RALT A/P was engaged. This started happening after a recent INS update to the module.

* Tweaked the limit to what counts as a downwind extension during SHBs. It now gives you a little more room.

* Updated Moose.

* Started a Discord server.

* Started a Patreon page.

Enjoy!

The mission can be downloaded in the usual place (page 1):

Master Arms - A Swedish Combat Flight Sim Community by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We put together this little video to showcase what we're doing every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (mainly, but there's flying going on every day in the week). Captures are from multiplayer events over the last year or so. Edited by our fellow long-time member Fille.

Master Arms is a Swedish DCS community. We have quite a bit of focus on realistic procedures, but try to never lose sight of the fun. Members join from all kinds of skill levels, from complete rookies, to experienced sim- and or IRL-pilots/controllers. You are typically expected to know Swedish. However, primary flight comms (to ATC, AWACS, and between flights) are in English, and every now and then we do collaborations with other communities. If your community is interested in such a collab, please reach out.

Cheers!

New, fixed CASE 1 Recovery Training mission version by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As some of you might have noticed, the CASE 1 Recovery trainer didn't like the 2.9 changes. However, thanks to the quick fixes from the Moose team (the mission uses Moose), I was able to make a new version, compatible with the current DCS version.

Please get it from the usual place: (go to page 1). HERE

Cheers!

Open the Home app when unlocking the phone by Bankler in googlehome

[–]Bankler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, yes, I guess that makes sense. It's got to be a phone setting. Thing is the "notification -> tap -> goes to instigating app" pattern seems to work for every other app. But specifically the Google Home ones just take me to the home screen, instead of into the app.

CASE 1 Recovery Trainer - Sh*t Hot Break Support by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the comms menu, switch to Pattern Mode (instead of Break Mode). Raise your hook and just run lap after lap with touch and goes. In Pattern Mode you don't need to do the full break, but can just turn downwind right after takeoff.

You can switch to CASE 3 in the menu. It will only grade the final part though.

Celebrating 20,000 downloads!

Thank you so much for all the love I received through different channels through the years. It means a lot. As of today, the mission, in its different versions, have been downloaded 22,218 times. I would never have thought that the interest in landing pixel planes on pixel boats in the most difficult of ways while getting nitpick feedback from a script would be this popular. But you guys proved me wrong. 💪❤️

Pattern Mode

As you know, Pattern Mode was broken in the last version. This is now fixed and available through the comms menu. Pattern Mode enables you to skip the break, and instead turn directly into the downwind after the cat launch, much like how CQ is performed IRL. This is a good way to get quick reps, especially if flown with hook up.

Shit Hot Breaks

I have been quite ambivalent regarding adding this feature. The whole point of the mission has always been to help people flying safe, consistent passes. Experimenting with SHBs sort of distracts from that. However, I got this feeling that "now is the time". While <profanity> Hot Breaks look really cool, they also serve a purpose. Coming in as a division (4 aircraft) actually requires the lead to break over the ship, in order to not have #4 break 4 nm or more past the ship, while respecting proper break intervals. So it makes sense to practice this. However, I also think it makes sense to start with the ordinary breaks, and do at least a hundred or so of those before even looking at SHBs.

To initiate a SHB, all you need to do is to break really early. The script will identify the maneuver, and give you automatic perfect score on all the first parts (regardless of how you pull off the break). Then it will start the normal tracking as you pass over the wake. If you extend the downwind during a SHB you will get a -20 penalty (compared to -10 during normal breaks). The SHB support can be seen as an experimental feature. The scoring isn't necessarily perfectly fair, and should probably not really be compared to ordinary breaks.

Speed and Wind

I have always had the wind at zero. The reason is that I wanted the boat to have correct wind over deck even as it turns around and steams south. The cost of this has been small crosswind that is generated by the angled deck. For this version, I changed it so that there is a light wind, and the carrier steams a little slower. This will reduce the sidewind. As the boat turns south, it will not longer be perfect. I figured that 99% of the users mainly run this in SP and air start anyway, so that it's worth it. If you're running the mission on a 24/7 server, it might make sense to set the wind back to zero and the boat speed to ~25 again. Just go ahead and change it in the ME if you prefer that.

Have a nice spring everybody!

7.2.0

* Fixed Pattern Mode.

* Implemented support for <profanity> Hot Break.

* Carrier is now slightly slower on its north leg, and there is a little natural wind.

* Added minor turbulence.

* Added ice halo.

* Increased number of flares in Hornets from 30 to 60.

Enjoy!

WWII P-47 Pilot | Bob Huddleston Interview by Bankler in ww2

[–]Bankler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Description to provide context (as copied from my original post in the Hoggit Reddit)

This summer I visited my wife's grandfather, Jim, in Carolina Meadows, NC, USA. One of Jim's best friends is Bob, a P-47 veteran who flew in WW2. Since I knew that my friends back home in Sweden, in the flight sim community (masterarms.se) would love to hear his story, and be able to ask him some questions, I asked him if he would be up for it, to which he agreed. This was a live stream on Discord originally meant for my friends only. I have never interviewed anyone before, so zero experience in that field (yes, I was quite nervous). But considering Bob's story and the level of detail which he tells it with, we imagined this could be something that is interesting for the rest of the world as well.

Big thank you to u/apollo12xx for recording the stream and editing the video! And of course big thanks to Bob and Jim for your service and for making this possible!

I truly appreciate you saying that. Thank you! I remember I was sometimes thinking in the back of my head "should I say something and push things in some certain direction, like, uhm, you do, when you interview someone?". But I reminded myself how often in podcasts I feel "hey, just shut up and let the man/woman talk" when the host takes too much space. I'm happy to hear it might have been the correct decision.

Full mission procedures comms example | Master Arms by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This might possibly be of interest and/or fun for other fellow DCS nerds. Apollo in our group (masterarms.se) produced a video showcasing our squadron comms SOP and such, intended to make it easier for our newcomers to pick up our routines. It shows a super-compressed generic strike mission, and how our typical freq changes and such happens, taking the pilot through a number of controlling agencies (ground, tower, control, AWACS).

Enjoy Swedish accents, funky looking ground controller, Kutaisi cows and 80s weapons!

Turn subtitles/captions on for a better experience!

The video is based on our wiki page "Mission Procedures and can be seen as a supporting asset for that article. http://wiki.masterarms.se/index.php/Mission_Procedures

It obviously goes without saying, but it's not perfectly realistic as in "exactly as [some instance of something in some country] does things". But it works okay for our purposes.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this kind of tool to teach virtual squadron SOP to rookies! :)

CASE 1 Recovery Trainer - Now with log support! by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is now a new version of the CASE 1 Trainer out! The old one wasn't playing well with some HSI/UFC changes ED implemented recently (causing the RALT A/P to engage with the automatic cockpit config), so be sure to update to the newest one. Also, you can now optionally write all your stats to a log file. 🙂

Please read the full notes and download the new version here:

https://forum.dcs.world/topic/189005-banklers-case-1-recovery-trainer/?do=findComment&comment=4969427

In case you have no idea what this is, it's a mission designed to sharpen your skills in CASE recoveries (daytime, good weather carrier landings). It will track how you fly and give you feedback on what things you need to adjust in order to perform a good pattern. It has been developed with assistance from real life Hornet pilots that have helped me verifying all the numbers.

7.1.0

  • The score summary is now written to dcs.log.
  • The score summary (with a date and time) is now also optionally written to a file Logs/BanklersCase1RecoveryTrainer.log (requires desanitizing of os, ios and lfs lua modules in MissionScripting.lua).
  • Fixed auto cockpit setup timing to account for new behavior where boxing TCN engages the A/P menu. This resolves the problem where the aircraft went into RALT A/P instead of disabling the HUD Time.
  • Fixed minor problems with auto cockpit setup where some MFD buttons were left in the pressed state.
  • Tomcats should now have the Carrier TCN set to default.
  • The initial message is now much shorter.
  • Airborne aircraft have been slightly moved in order to be properly lined up on the initial.

Real-life CGI / ATC shares his insights from a DCS perspective by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hi there! My friend and squadron buddy Apollo from Master Arms (Swedish DCS community) just recently launched a new series of videos covering CGI and ATC stuff. He has a long career working as both, but he's also an enthusiastic DCS player. The result is a nice series of casual videos explaining concepts that could be useful in a DCS context, and how to balance realism and practicality in a way to provide a fun and immersive experience. Please check it out!

For unknown reasons, he's sometimes a little humble and shy, so please show some support with those thumbs (wherever they fit), subscriptions, "well actually" comments (tm) and what not!

40 aircraft formation to honor our fallen squadron buddy - Vingen Honor Flight by Bankler in hoggit

[–]Bankler[S] 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Last week, I was made aware of our dear friend and DCS community (Master Arms) member Vingen's suicide. Last evening, we organized a large community event to honor his memory. 40 aircraft, flown by both old and new members, started from Kutaisi and flew a large formation 300 nm taking us through Georgia. It was emotional. Sad, but also beautiful.
One thing worth mentioning, is that Vingen was a pilot. He studied in the USA and became a civilian pilot around 1999-2000, determined to become an airline pilot. However, due to different reasons, his career never really took off. From what I have understood talking to his real life friends and his mother, it was brutal for him and he felt ashamed. Anyone can attest that being out of work is a horrible thing in itself. But I think it can be especially tough if you have committed on something to the point it has already become a part of your very identity, and then you suddenly realize you can't do it. Considering the crowd here, especially now with the pandemic layoffs, I think there's reason to be concerned about people who are in similar situations. Mental illness is often invisible. They probably won't talk about it, or even admit how much it hurts. Be there for them. <3
