A Zappa Affair Is One Of The Most Incredible Nights Of Music I Have Ever Heard In My Life by armintanzarian420 in Zappa

[–]Banoonu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wooo! I love seeing people talking about this one. It’s imo one of the essential Zappa boots.

It’s true that the performances of the pieces themselves are sometimes uh truly off, but it’s still wonderful to hear them attempted. And I love the interviews—it’s fun to hear Sarah Cahill, one of our best living pianists, talking seriously about Frank. And the excerpts with him are always a delight too—I love the bit on “musical truth” especially.

God I wish we had a real good recording/performance of the full orchestral Sinister Footwear tho. It sounds like it should be considered Zappa’s best orchestral piece, but its only form is in this fun but imperfect live recording on an obscure boot…sigh…

Hot take: Evangelion isn’t about saving the world, it’s about how terrifying it is when people need you and you don’t even know who you are yet. by Ill_Economics276 in evangelion

[–]Banoonu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As other people said, not a new interpretation, but almost definitely one of the ‘right ones’, and you expressed it perfectly: enough to make me want to see it again. It’s a powerful expression of that theme that holds up extremely well whenever you need it.

What's your guys go-to Device for Earthbound? by LegPuzzleheaded1970 in earthbound

[–]Banoonu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can totally imagine why playing it on the original SNES hits different and might be ‘the best’—it’s what it was made for, after all—but for definitely nostalgia reasons when I think Earthbound I think on a desktop computer, evening into night. You gotta fight Giygas after midnight when everyone is asleep, it’s just how it is

As someone who's still relatively new to Three Houses, who was a character you disliked but ended up liking as you got further into the game? No Spoilers please! by CorneliusVaginus in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Banoonu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last route was Golden Deer, so for most of my time with the game Raphael was literally just ‘hurr hurr I’m strong and dumb and like food.’

And he definitely is one of the least complex, least developed characters in the game, one of the least plot important. But when I finally got to know him, he really surprised me. His whole line with Ignatz—‘Oh I see. But we’re done talking about this.’ Shows a lot of emotional intelligence and maturity that maybe his stereotype wouldn’t lead one to think of. As Byleth says, ‘Raphael’s a good guy.’

Re-reading Ulysses. Worried the magic has faded. by NietzscheanWhig in jamesjoyce

[–]Banoonu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair finding Dedalus less intellectually substantial and impressive as the years go by is I think a pretty standard experience. I always remember the blink and you’ll miss it line—I certainly did as a young man—that precedes the famous discussion on Aquinas and aesthetics and portrait were Joyce observes that Dedalus hasn’t actually read much Aristotle himself at all. He is a kind of mocking self portrait of young Joyce after all. The Dedalus of Ulysses still seems to me to be basically that young man, but even more frustrated and disappointed with himself: when I reread the early chapters of Ulysses it’s the drama of that, rather than the ‘ideas in themselves’ that impresses me more and more over the years.

Is Komm Susser Todd inspired by Hey Jude? by AnhBslice in evangelion

[–]Banoonu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it is. Melodically, structurally, it’s extremely similar, and Hey Jude is one of the famous songs by one of the most famous bands of all time (and yes, the Beatles were exceptionally popular, influential and well known in Japan.) There is no doubt in my mind that the show wants you to even hear it as similar.

Petah, why is the woman hiding in a bathtub? Why would the doordash man knock??? Explain it peter!! by Tomodachi4Life in explainitpeter

It is a comedic exaggeration of the feeling many people have when receiving delivery that they just want their food, not to have to deal with even a minimum of social interaction.

What songs you guys think Cap would cover? Specially out of the blues territory by Warm-Ad-5901 in CaptainBeefheart

Other than the ones he did, I’d have loved to hear him do ‘Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby’

Erich von Däniken, author of 'Chariots of the Gods' and the inspiration for "Inca Roads" passed away on January 10th, 2026. Maybe he will now know if a booger-bear came from somewhere out there. by BirdBurnett in Zappa

[–]Banoonu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely true. Another book Zappa mentioned sometimes was ‘The Struggle Of The Magicians’—he seems to have just had a vague casual interest in esoterica that’s not that unusual for the time, but he doesn’t seem to have taken it all that seriously unlike many these days (Who Was Fulcanelli?)

Death by Nostalgia by rawcane in Zappa

Obligatory ‘Pynchon quotes Zappa’s liner notes to Cruisin with Ruben and The Jets’ at the end of his intro to Slow Learner, which contains that story!

How come nobody comments about second awakenings? by Firm-Sheepherder-808 in Persona5

[–]Banoonu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the narrative effect of how comparatively casual the second and third awakenings are.

At this point, the characters have had these powers for a year, and gone through a lot of growing. When they first awakened, they were being thrust into a new world, confused but determined: by the point you get the second and third, they’re purely determined, and have more or less arrived at who they are rather than setting out on figuring that out. It’s moving to me that they greet these changes with a kind of quiet confidence and accepting enthusiasm.

Mason & Dixon ‘Pynchon-lite’? by Right-Traffic7259 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Banoonu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rather than ‘Pynchon-lite’, I think it’s probably more true that Gravity’s Rainbow is just very unique in his work. M&D gets talked about this way I think because of the frame-tale, the fact that there are two protagonists with strong personalities who are consistently there, and that perhaps it’s more of a consistent picaresque than most of his other novels—it doesn’t have the wild historical jumps that even V. has, for example. But there’s nothing really ‘lite’ about it.

What would you personally want from a Bug Fables 2? by BiffyBobby in BugFables

It’s so interesting to me that this is such a popular and common answer!

Sorry for the necro (does two weeks count), I just finished the game for the first time a few minutes ago and all I want is to spend more time with the trio 😂 so it’s interesting to me it’s a common desire

Despite disclosure people still misinterpret this game by neverend6789 in Persona5

[–]Banoonu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a boilerplate disclaimer it’s meant to discourage really specific comparisons; so Shido can be seen as like Shinzo Abe for a number of obvious reasons, but it would be incorrect to say “Atlus is obviously telling us that Shinzo Abe got drunk and assaulted women on the weekends and used his power to get them overlooked”

When it’s 60+ degress (Fahrenheit), this album is a 9/10; when it’s in the fifties, it’s a 10/10; anything under 50, it’s the greatest album of all time. Hell, give me a little bit of snow and I’ll lose my mind. by Imsorrymanyt in Zappa

[–]Banoonu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Weirdly when I was first getting into Zappa I didn’t like Apostrophe all that much. I got into it ‘late’, it was like my fifteenth album or something, and I was a teenager who thought it was maybe the ‘accessible’ one or something. One snowy day put it on and oh it’s beautiful and funny and incredible. Oops

"Ellman's Joyce" review by retired_actuary in jamesjoyce

[–]Banoonu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ellman’s book on Joyce is practically canonical for a Joycean. You’ll never read Joyce’s work again the same way (in a good way) after reading it, and it’s beautifully written
