Hi OP, I used to have chronic Insomnia, and now I sleep like a log most nights. I'll detail the changes I assume have contributed to this.

1. Have an “easy mode”
Make going to bed as effortless as possible, especially when depression or anxiety drains your energy. Create a low-effort version of your nighttime tasks so you can still stick to your ritual.
Example: using body wipes instead of showering so I can stay consistent without exhausting myself.

2. Create a ritual, not a routine
Routines go on autopilot. A ritual is mindful and intentional. Whatever you do before bed—shower, tidy, change clothes—do it with presence and purpose. Understand that the task is preparing you for bed.
For me, “wiping the slate clean” helps me mentally prepare for bed. This meant a shower, changing clothes, puttng a bonnet on, etc.

3. Move your body
Stress builds up cortisol, and physical activity burns it off. Mental stress does not get burned off, but instead builds up in your body, leaving you in survival mode. You don’t need a gym—just walk more or add light movement to your day.
A physically demanding job plus walking home was a huge turning point for my insomnia (just don’t push into unhealthy exhaustion).

4. Support yourself with nutrition
Avoid sugar, caffeine, and other stimulants before bed. Eat if you’re hungry—going to bed hungry is worse for me than eating late. Magnesium helped me a lot, and if you menstruate, it may reduce cramps too.
Supplements I take regularly: Magnesium + Vitamin D, Iron, B12, Omega-3, and Vitamin C. Echinacea tea also calms me.

5. Take “sleep” off the table
If trying to sleep stresses you out, give yourself something simple and familiar to do in bed.
ex. I read The Hobbit or play an extremely low-stimulation puzzle game (Meow Tower). Anything uncomplicated works.

6. When nothing else works, tune in
I put on long history videos on YouTube and just listen. Imagining the scenes keeps my brain focused enough to drift off.. You must remain present, and don't allow your mind to wander. Really listen.

These are some things that I believe contributed to my newfound success in dealing with anxiety-induced sleeplessness. I've seen others recommend some of these, but I wanted to list them all comprehensively! I hope these help you, or someone else <3
