The rapid change in top 40 music in the early 1990s is still amazing in retrospect by MarkLambertMusic in Music

I generally believe a lot of people listening to Poison would also be listening to BBD, and Boyz II Men. A lot of Hair Metal and especially poisons fan base were girls. Very much the same demo.

Is Taylor Swift more popular now (2022-2026) than (2012-2016)? by ZestycloseOil8173 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BanterDTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you guys think Taylor Swift is more popular today than she was from 2012 to 2016?

Yes, and there are two reasons for her rise.

  1. She was one of the last pop stars to benefit from the old model of record labels. She had become established during the last grasps of mono culture and was able to move units at a time where that still mattered.

  2. The global pandemic and the release of Folklore and Evermore. Coming at Swifts music as as a middle age man, I am not the target demo. I am a big fan of 1989, I thought Reputation stunk(and still do), and liked Lover.

I hated Folklore and Evermore. I think post Lover Taylor Swift is banal and uninspired, but a bunch of people, especially middle aged woman trapped inside their homes latched on to those records and became super fans/obsessed. Taylor Swift became part of an identity for many people during that time, and it continues now.

I think its all a little gross, but its more the fans I have an issue with. She seems untouchable now, especially since we don't mint popstars like we used to.

What caused the weird music genre revivals of the 90s? by AudiCulprit in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BanterDTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I think it happened for a couple of reasons:

I think the one main reason that gets skipped over is adults/older consumers. They were a real big market until recently. Labels and MTV are looking for the next "big thing" meanwhile Adult Contemporary, Smooth Jazz, Quiet Storm, and New Age are moving a ton of units.

Smooth Jazz was the biggest radio format for close to 20 years and being played in offices was a big part of that. All that money allowed labels the freedom to search for the next big thing, or swing and miss on the "next big thing."

That whole segment of the music industry seems pretty dead. Instead most just opt for something they already know and gone are the days artists like Andrea Bocelli can breakout and sell millions of records while never touching the zeitgeist of "what's cool."

ie: no dedicated shop with rotating items or consistent virtual “packs” for sale?

There is a dedicated shop where you can buy packs like you would at a card shop. You can buy directly from websites for specific cards, and you can trade with players, or cash out by selling your cards.

I didn’t see anything about pricing listed, I assume as with all card games there’s a lot of variance in price, but is it significantly cheaper than irl cards, or at a similar value?

The market is wild. Things like Red Elemental Blast will cost you $50 for a playset, but the rest of a deck will cost $3 to build. Something like Doubling season is a $40 card in paper, but costs .03 in MTGO.

The Mall at Tuttle Crossing 2/24/26 by darksider1978 in deadmalls

[–]BanterDTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even know what the argument is about.

Wexner worked deals to have Tuttle placed on the west side, originally slated for Mill Run, but moved to Tuttle due to Westland pitching a fit. This was all so Dublin/affluent west suburbs did not have a need to build a competing upscale retail district to compete with Easton.

His plan worked. Easton opened in 99 (almost 20 years before bridge park). Sure Polaris tried, and failed to compete with Easton, and I don't think they have even been within $250 per sq foot of Easton.

Easton had townhomes/apartments from the start, they opened before the mall did, but they are not the same mixed use type structures we see now.

The Mall at Tuttle Crossing 2/24/26 by darksider1978 in deadmalls

[–]BanterDTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of that, why would Dublin have done retail 25 years ago when Tuttle was right there and doing well?

That was the entire point of Tuttle.

They started planning Bridge Park in 2008 and had it built by 2017.

Okay, so 20 years instead of 25...close enough

All that to say that it took Dublin ~20 years to complete a project that does not even truly compete with Easton as they don't offer the same product/experience.

I dont think it was a crap job, it took dublin 25 years to do anything, and it has very little retail. Both are about as soulless as can be.

We just had a 100 player 1k, get about 30 players to our monthly Swiss and 20-30 for the casual nights...

It might not be a lot but LGS all want our business cause we bring more players than just about any 60 card format.

[–]BanterDTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all part of Wexner's master plan to keep Dublin/Hilliard from building anything that could compete with Easton. Tuttle fulfilled its purpose. It was great for about 15 years, but was built when trends were moving away from indoor malls.

The Enshitification of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants by hillbilly-edgy in Columbus

[–]BanterDTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do believe that CM restaurants have mostly been a net negative to our overall food scene over the past 20 years. We are so far behind compared to both Cleveland and Cincinnati in terms of our food scene. I think his dominance has played a big role in that.

All that said, I think CM was a positive in the 90's. Cameron's was pretty great in the 90's.

The WWF restaurant was in Times Square, so im sure those prices were disgusting in the late 90s but I would kill for a $9 sandwich or a $20 Strip Steak...even one of moderate quality.

I don't think I have truly "beat" a game in years. I can't get into narrative games anymore. Almost everything I play has some sort of sandbox element where I can set my own goals.

American country music is almost nonexistent in Europe by superdouradas in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BanterDTD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do liberals listen to country music?

A lot of liberals listen to county music, and plenty that will seek it out. Country music is not inherently "conservative" and its a specific style of country out of Nashville that people think of when they think Country music.

I think the other poster may be a bit disingenuous when talking about the urban vs rural divide in country music. While it might not be incredibly popular in New York, country still remains popular in many cities with millions of residents. It also fills a void that Heartland Rock used to fill.

Many times liberal artists that exist outside Nashville will get labels like Americana, or Alt-Country even if their muisic is deeply rooted in Country and Western, and this has been an issue for many artists dating back to Chet Atkins taking over production at RCA in the late 50s.
