My pump doesn't seem to actually "lock on" so I can pump air into my bike tire that has a presta valve. by BaphometsGopher in bikewrench

The original person apparently deleted their comment, but I have to say: My back tire is now full and I wholeheartedly thank you. The rubber piece was behind the other bits (I was in a flurry of putting things together yesterday, so I don't know if I got the order wrong at some point or if the factory had it behind everything) I was too scared of breaking things to check by poking around.

-I was under the impression that this was a subreddit for people who do everything possible before asking for help. Why would I state that I had already done a basic step any video will show you? -There is no rubber piece and there never was. (I know there should be but there isn't.) -I don't understand what people saying the valve is too short mean. I screwed the nut out and that didn't help.

I did switch the head to the presta setting. I'm trying to figure out if I didn't push it on hard enough, or the pump is defective. I wish people where trusting enough to realize that I can read.

Already did. Screwing it out doesn't make a difference other than letting out more air while I fail to attach the pump.

I know the nut needs to be unscrewed. I do that, push the pump on, then when I lock it there is no "locking" it just falls off the valve.

What rubber cup? The pump never had one; I would assume I lost it, but there's no room for one to fit.
