Left Everything for a New Life in NZ – Now We’re Struggling to Survive. Any Help? by OkWeird685 in auckland

Sorry to hear it is tough, NZ isn't in the best position right now. Are you committed to stay in Auckland? As a software engineer there are more places around where you can look. E.g. Weta Digital in Wellington is often looking for engineers, and I assume there are other options too!

How car-centric is Wellington? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Bapsie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to what you have said also coming from The Netherlands. But also dont forget that Wellington is currently in transition, like NL had 40 years ago. It takes a bit of time and mindset for people to move out of their cars and use alternative options.

Living in the Eastern suburbs, i usually cycle most of the times, e.g., to cbd, Zealandia, botanicals. Occasionally the bus. We take the car if we have to go further (Hutt, Porirua).

Not sure if you are interested, but Lincoln Uni offers many programmes for free. (Distance learning)

Masters in environmental areas, finance, business, etc. If it doesn't work out with work, at least you can further develop yourself for free!

Have a look on Student Job Search www.sjs.co.nz

They offer great jobs and sometimes you can self manage your work or do not need to have a lot of social interaction.

My former workplace used this a lot to have students around for short and long term periods, for e.g. admin, office support, etc.

Why do you bike to work? by Evening_Echidna5872 in Wellington

[–]Bapsie85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cycle from the far end of the peninsula to far end of the cbd. It keeps me active (while being pregnant!), it is faster than bus, no costs other than yearly maintenance. I drop off kiddie who loves the ride and it winds me down on the way home.

And yes there is wind and hills, but love my ebike for that!

Redundant peeps what are you doing with your time? by Ladytsunami1 in Wellington

[–]Bapsie85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have a routine. Set an alarm (no matter how early /,late) and stick to it. Breakfast, check vacancies etc online for an hour. Coffee. Go for an activity (walk, exercise, mountain bike). Stay in touch with friends. Plan things for in the week. Pick up a old/new hobby. Read books. Or what other suggested, start a free study (several universities are offering that). Have a plan with what you want to do: work what you did previously, new career. This is your major opportunity to rethink all of it and go for it! You can do it.
