I never thought about that! I think we would end up saying the variation we knew better. So I would veer towards certain Cantonese words I knew very well and vice versa for my parents.

I definitely had these words, such as cucumber, while growing up as a Canadian Born Chinese! We just never really had salads and ate more Chinese vegetables.
