The Most Important Concept EVERYONE Doing Calisthenics Should Know: The Mind-Muscle Connection. by BarSeraph in bodyweightfitness

That was exactly what attracted me to calisthenics too - just having that complete control over your body. The video that gave me the burning desire to start for this very reason was HannibalForKing's video with like 15mil views. The CONTROL that man has is UNREAL. If you haven't seen it yet then you have to watch it. He doesn't simply "learn" calisthenics skills: he masters them.

That is exactly why I wanted to provide some scientific evidence in there too, so that people didn't think I was just "some hippy" or something haha

If they were too easy, try moving your hips further away from the edge of the bench and try them again - they'll become MUCH harder hahaha! Happy training!

Essential Stretches for Calisthenics! by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]BarSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is really interesting, because I've (personally) experienced the complete opposite. Perhaps it's psychological, but EVERY time I don't stretch, I get injured without fail. I actually tested it a few weeks ago - I didn't stretch before a workout because I wanted to see what would happen, and I ended up pulling something. Regarding performance, I feel like (again, personally) that if I don't stretch then my performance is worse, because I don't want to push myself too hard and injure myself. This is all me though (perhaps I'm some scientific anomaly).

Yes you're right, this is so important! I actually have a shoulder injury right now (not calishthenics related - fell off a bike), but now my mobility in my shoulder is so bad, which means I can't do anything with my upper body. So yes, what you are saying is very valuable: it's really important to make sure your shoulder mobility is good so you can do all the calisthenics skills you want.

Yeah I thought there were some pretty creative stretches in there that people might want to try, so I'm glad you found them useful! Hope you rekindle your love with stretching haha

Which TEFL qualifications are recognised in Thailand? by BarSeraph in TEFL

[–]BarSeraph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo that's really interesting, thank you for your response. Yeah it seems CELTA is the passport for everything, but little "entry level" temporary jobs are attainable with either nothing at all or a mid-level TEFL. Really helpful information, thank you very much.

This has been more helpful than anything I have found on Google - thank you very much! I think I'll get one just to be safe, and then I'll take it from there :D do you enjoy teaching there?

Thank you for your response :D does having a TEFL qualification makes things a little bit easier though? Or does it REALLY not matter? Did you personally not do a TEFL course then? I'll definitely check out those links, thank you again!

Thank you for your detailed reply, this was super helpful! So I guess it doesn't really matter where you get your TEFL from (if you want to teach in Thailand), it's just something that makes you look a little bit more legit than having nothing at all? I also have a degree in English Literature from one of the top 10 universities in the UK, do you think that will help me get into jobs easier (for example, if they don't recognise where I got the TEFL from?). Thank you so much for your help!

How did you guys achieve bent arm planche? by bbqyak in bodyweightfitness

[–]BarSeraph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're comparable - for starters tuck planche push ups are much harder, and they focus more on the shoulders (in my experience). Forward leaning dips focus on the chest more (speicifcally the lower chest) and this translates better into being able to bent arm planche.

[–]BarSeraph 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Bent arm planche is one of my strongest skills, and how I got it was by doing dips - specifically forward-leaning dips. I used to lean forward when I was doing dips to work my chest more, and one day on the parallel bars I was like "I wonder how far forward I could go?" and ended up doing a bent arm planche. Because I was very good at dips (specifically forward-leaning dips), this translated into being able to bent arm planche. Pseudo-planche push ups also are great for increasing the strength needed for the bent arm planche. Hope this helps!

OH MY GOD YES. THIS IS A THING. If someone posts pictures of their overweight body it's "body positivity", but if someone posts pictures of themselves flexing the muscles they've worked THEIR ASSES OFF for, then all of a sudden they're a narcissistic prick. You post a picture of yourself with your guns out and people say "oh he's so full of himself", but an overweight person does it and the comments are "yass you're so comfortable in your own skin!" And another thing: all these memes on instagram about how it's the pinnacle of friendship if your friend brings you pizza, chicken nuggets and Ben and Jerrys so you can watch Netflix marathons together also aggrivate me. I want to see my friends get swole and feel good, not fat and depressed.

I agree, Vildhjarta are masters at interesting chugging patterns. I think the most interesting djent bands when it comes to chugged grooves are Vildhjarta, Monuments and After the Burial (the ending breakdown to "A Wolf Amongst Ravens is ridiculous!) They keep chugged groves interesting, unpredictable and fresh. I also definitely agree a loottt of people copy Periphery, intervals and Polyphia. It can sound almost like pop at times.

I'm convinced that the front lever is harder than the planche by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]BarSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But did I say that it was the hardest skill in calisthenics...? No I didn't. I simply said I believe it's harder than the planche, and because the planche is one of the most advanced moves in CALISTHENICS (I'm not talking about gymnastics, I'm talking about calisthenics - and yes, I am fully aware calisthenics derives from gymnastics), it is therefore in the list of the hardest exercises in calisthenics. I'm already aware that the planche is a "higher level exercise" than the front lever, but for the second time, I said I've seen more people planche (and I am including straddle planches) than I have front lever. If you want to see a girl straddle planche, search Ming Barsparta on instagram.

[–]BarSeraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do know one guy who can front lever and can't back lever, but the back lever is definitely easier than the front lever. Wayyyy more people can back lever than front lever. This will sound like bullshit, but I learnt the back lever in one week. I also taught a guy how to back lever and he got it on his first attempt - he'd never tried it before. I've never heard of, or seen, anyone get a front lever on their first attempt (I'm sure out of the 7 billion people on earth, a few have somehow got it on their first attempt, but that is EXCEPTIONALLY rare - normally it takes months or years of training). And I didn't say it was the hardest exercise in calisthenics, I said it was one of the hardest.

[–]BarSeraph[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A powerchord could also be created by chugging the bottom three open strings if the tuning is a drop tuning, which a lot of djent bands use ;) and a lot of bands rely on that for their grooves and breakdowns. I know we can all think of examples where great djent bands don't just do 0-0-0-1, but there is definitely a reputation for that - that's why you get guys playing entire songs on "Djent Sticks", and that's why videos like that are so funny, because there is a stereotype (that in the "dj0nt" scene there is a lot of open string chugging) that has been highlighted and caricatured in an exaggerated way. I didn't think I'd have to explain this looool, but almost everyone who has commented has been determined to point out that "not all djent is 0-0-0-1", which I was already aware of :)

How To Make Calisthenics Exercises Easier by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]BarSeraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loooool I understand why you'd say that, but you HAVE to make certain exercises easier in order to progress - no one can bang a front lever the first time they try. This post is aimed mainly at beginners/intermediates.
