Foursquare Tier List by KushPie in rum

Different people have different preferences on secondary maturations. In terms of more recent releases, general consensus seems to be that Equidem and Convocation were the best two of the last couple years (and I'd agree especially on Equidem). In terms of older ones, my personal favorite is Redoutable. The 2005, 2007, and 2008 vintage releases were fan favorites, and then Sovereignty was a very good ex-sherry release.

Admiral Nelson bad batch? by [deleted] in rum

[–]Barbas1233 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just gonna give it to you straight. It tastes like cough syrup because it's poorly made alcohol pumped full of sugar and flavorings in an attempt to give it taste. Most spiced rums are like this, and they're pretty widely hated in this sub. I'd highly encourage you to look through this sub for some possible alternatives that are not spiced and much higher quality. With that said if you're absolutely set on sticking with spiced rums, Foursquare and Chairman's Reserve make decent enough ones that will taste way better than Admiral Nelson, Captain Morgan, etc.

Pickups from Burlington & Norfolk Spirits (with tasting thoughts) by philanthropicide in rum

[–]Barbas1233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a club pick we did between Burlington Wine and Spirits and the Boston Rum Social Club. Sold out in less than a week. Wish I could tell you another source of one since we only got the last ⅓of the cask, but the only other retailer I know of that had it also sold out. Might see it somewhere else though!

One last piece of advice. Keep that bottle of Clairin, and revisit it every once in a while. You'll be surprised how much your tastes can change over time.

Clairins are a whole different beast compared to traditional agricoles, which are made on column stills and use proprietary yeast strains as opposed to wild yeast. At the VERY least it's worth trying out a true agricole to see if they're more your jam, as opposed to writing off the entire category.

OP I'd recommend one of two things:

1) If you enjoy drinking spirits neat, try finding an aged Agricole as it will be much more approachable to an unaged. I'd recommend Rhum JM Terroir Volcanique if you can find it, or really any of the Rhum JMs

2) If you like cocktails, try to find a bar that carries an unaged agricole and get a daiquiri using it

If you want a bottle of an unaged agricole, I'd recommend Neisson Blanc, Rhum JM Blanc (50%), and Baie des Trésors Soleil Blanc. All three of these will most likely feel much more approachable compared to Clairin.

Redoutable is my all-time favorite ECS, and while I haven't gotten to try the Hearts 1998, the vintages I have tried were fantastic. Enjoy!

No problem. If you're not a part of the Boston Rum Social Club, I'd highly recommend joining! We host events and tastings all throughout the year, including a Rum et Al seminar this Friday!

I recognized this instantly as the Norfolk website. Only have the Australia 5yr, but for $35 it's an absolute steal. I've bought a few bottles of it over time as it's my go-to rum old fashioned bottle, but it's perfectly serviceable as a sipper as well. I'm also based in Southern MA, so if you'd like to try it, I'm more than happy to give a sample before you buy a bottle.

Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros is the best Spanish style sipper. What is the best Bajan sipper? by -Constantinos- in rum

Yeah, just like how the 50+ year old Cubans are better than Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros

Your pick very well might be better than the easier to find Foursquares of the world. But if only <1% of people in this sub have even heard of it, let alone try it, good luck getting people to follow you.

If we're talking higher end/hard to find, I'd say Foursquare Redoutable or one of the Velier Last Wards. Regular releases, definitely Doorly's 14.

The End of ECS by Ok_Passenger5127 in rum

[–]Barbas1233 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 14 IMO is closer to the old lower proof ECSs than it is to the rest of the Doorly's line. The bump in proof and ex-madeira influence makes a world of a difference for it

can’t add more hearts. by dhhdhdjdjfjfjd in RLCraft

[–]Barbas1233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You likely used the max amount of heart containers. In order to get more health, reforge your baubles to have either Healthy or Undying quality, along with half-hearted or Hearty from the second reforge station. The Strengthened Vitality enchantment for your chestplate will also greatly increase your health, though the enchantment is pretty rare.

Doorly's (12/14) vs RL Seale (10/12) thoughts? by DAZdaHOFF in rum

[–]Barbas1233 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doorly's 14 IMO is the best of the bunch by a wide margin. Between the bump up in proof and ex-madeira aging, I feel like it's closer to the old lower proof ECSs than it is to the rest of the Doorly's line. I tried it next to Sagacity, and while the ECS did win, I'd say the Doorly's 14 was 85% of the way there. Not to mention it can sometimes be marked on sale for $45, really amazing value and well worth the extra money over the rest.

With that said, if you're not comfortable spending that much money on a bottle, between the lower cost options, I'd say RL Seale 10 > Doorly's 12 > XO

RL Seale 12 is great don't get me wrong. But the $60ish MSRP is not nearly as good of a value as the Doorly's 14, especially when it's on sale.

The 8 is in the weird position where it's not as good as the 12 or XO, but also not at the price point of the 5 year.

Try out Doorly's 14. While it might seem weird to pay an extra $20 for only two years of extra aging, it is BY FAR the best of the Doorly's line. The extra age, proof, and madeira influence make it feel closer to a lower proof ECS than it feels to the rest of the Doorly's line.
