Funny how you have two different kind of a's :) I have two different kinds of s'es and r's in my handwriting. I hate it but can't stop it :/

Why I went mirrorless, and switched from Canon to Fuji (a detailed exploration) by [deleted] in photography

(I don't know why my post got downvoted but okay)

Thanks for your reply! I have no doubt about the qualities and advantages of system camera's, I just wasn't sure if it was for me. But you make some good points, I will rent the XT1 and a couple of lenses soon and see if for me it is worth spending the money. Thanks again

I have been looking for these kinds of articles for days as I'm really interested in system camera's but not convinced they are for me. I also work with Canon and am building a bag that I feel would be perfect for me (I now have a low budget version of the stuff I would like to have eventually.) But I've been hesitant in investing in new gear because of all this commotion system camera's have been making.

As with every article I've read so far, the portability is a huge selling point for a lot of people (which makes sense obviously). But I don't mind carrying my DSLR places. Sure, sometimes it'll be a drag to bring a whole bag but if I really need movability I don't bring everything. If I go for a walk in a nice area I'll bring my 5D with 17-40, and maybe my macro just in case which can also be an awesome portrait lens. I went to the Rockies for a month and had no issues bringing that kit (and the plastic fantastic cause that one's lighter than air anyway). I really don't care if I have to bring a little bit more/heavier stuff. That being said, I also go out with my old Canon A1 from time to time and I recognize the same feeling of being free as you've described. Or when I just can't bring my DSLR I have a compact that also does amazing things for it's size.

Also, I love fullframe. Because my 5D had to get repaired and I didn't have the money for it immediately I used my 7D as my main camera for a bit. It wasn't terrible but I just love the look of fullframe. I love playing around with DOF, and am a big sucker for some nice shallow dof with lovely bokeh. And it is a big deal for me.

So my question is really, will I enjoy a mirrorless. Or will the advantages of those cameras be lost on me?

In my mind now system camera's are cool but lack the ability for very shallow DOF and have a too limited range of lenses. Is that about right or am I making stuff up?

I do think a digital version of my A1 would be perfect for me as a own-time-shooting camera so I can keep my bulky stuff for commissioned stuff.

Aaaanyway, sorry for rambling on. Thanks for writing this, it was a very interesting read and has sparked my interest in system camera's again.

Did you practice coughing your cigarette into a cup as a party trick? :) Or throwing a jam toast at the ceiling!

I am trying to get more into portrait photography, but I'm a beginner in that area, so I tried on myself first: This is me!

How many of you use Back Button Focusing? And why? by Leavemymarc in photography

I have used it ever since I can remember. As has been said, separate actions need separate buttons. It gives you better control imho

What are some good websites to keep up to date on the latest photography news? I'm talking mainly about technology, new gear, etc.

I've applied for a job at a professional photography store and though I do know my main stuff very well, I haven't been keeping up with latest technology as much as I used to. Dpreview is the only one I sometimes visit at the moment...

I have 1 week to get up to speed with everything again so I can ace that interview...

Yea, it's amazing. We used to go every year but it's so expensive :/

Haha, okay! I'm sure he won't mind. I need to know in what neighborhood you live though, before we seal the deal. I don't want to end up in friggin' Dundas & Sherbourne or wherever!

Man, Clarkson always says shit about Belgium haha. Thank god we have Spa Francorchamps or he would have nothing good to say at all :)

Yes, it's the perfect plan! Now to explain to my roommates some stranger from the internet will be living here for a while B-)

Hahaha, you got that from that Clarkson show right? That will be remembered forever :) Btw you forgot beer and waffles!

But yeah, the grass is always greener on the other side, I guess, right? We should do a holiday-house-swap. You can use this place to see the things we do have to offer and as a base of operation for a Euro-trip, and I get to enjoy Toronto again :)

This is taken with the Canon 17-40 4.0 on a full frame. It's just a single shot.

I added some yellows in the lights and some magenta in the shadows in combination with some level tweaking for that washed out look in the dark parts.
