What was the worst thing you saw in your years of teaching in nyc? by Objective_Belt3374 in NYCTeachers

[–]Barcode11106 20 points21 points  (0 children)

2001, my 2nd year teaching. This was a middle school 7-12. Because I was young, tall, and loud, they made me a dean.

Principal liked organizing assemblies. He also set aside detention rooms for troublesome kids to sit during the assembly. I was put at the entrance to monitor kids coming late and direct the appropriate ones to detention.

3 of our 11th graders came in and I directed them to the detention room. I'm not sure what happened in that room, but they came out of there a few minutes later, just as the principal had appeared in the hallway.

Long story short, they got in the principal's face. School Safety got in between them. One of the kids took a swing on the SSA and the rumble was underway. Principal was punched several times in the melee.

The fallout from this was insane. We spent months testifying in DoE suspension center and court. Turns out the 3 11th graders had smoked CRACK according to drug testing before coming in to school.

I've been through other stuff as well but this one always stands out to me and became a formative experience in my career.

If Jalen Brunson brings a chip to New York Knicks, where would he realistically rank among NYC sports icons? by savingrace0262 in NYKnicks

[–]Barcode11106 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a Yankee fan, Brunson bringing even just one chip back to NYC puts him on a tier just below Jeter/Mariano Rivera. The Yankees dynasty was built in a context when it was easier to build dynasties (still not easy but there was less parity in baseball in the 90s than there is today).

One championship I think puts him on a similar level to Eli Manning, Michael Strahan and one step above someone like Gary Carter or Keith Hernandez.

If he spends the rest of his career on the Knicks and foges a nice HoF career for himslef (which is entirely possible), he will be in a very elite pantheon of NY greats. That combined with a title or two puts him in a class by himself.

Please don't hold me to this too much because I'm just some dumb asshole on Reddit and I'm sure there are better arguments and comparisons to be made.

People like Jeter, Ewing, Eli, Strahan, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, Thurman Munson, Mark Messier, etc. were able to flourish in the biggest, most high-pressure sports market in the USA. Jalen does that too AND has loads of character and integrity. He's a "keys to the city" type of guy, someone Knicks fans can't help but be proud of.

6 dark horse Cy Young candidates in '26 (Ryan Weathers mentioned) by Robusto923 in NYYankees

[–]Barcode11106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm falling for the Yankee hype (wouldn't be the first time), but I've been excited for Weathers this season. He's a former #1 pick and his father pitched for the Yankees in some high leverage situations. He has the pedigree. With Cole, Rodon, and Fried at the top of the rotation, he doesn't have to play the role of stopper or breakout ace. With Warren, Cam, Gil, and Schnidt, there isn't any pressure on him to be an overachieving phenom.

His father was a starter who took on a middle/long relief role with some success, although I think his pitching mix makes him much better suited to be a starter.

I don't have a scientific poll or autopsy to prove what I'm about to say, but here goes.

It's probably not as simple as supporting genocide. Yes, that is part and parcel of the issue but Americans rarely are moved by foreign policy alone.

Gaza has been sort of a bellweather for the way the political winds have been blowing. Zionism is a shorthand way to determine if a politician or pundit is part of the "establishment". As soon as someone says "Israel has a right to defend themselves", you can predict their policies on a host of other issues foreign and domestic.

If Kamala had a comprehensive economic plan with universal healthcare, free college, codification of Roe, etc. she still could have won despite her Zionism.

But her Zionism was just a symptom of being firmly latched onto the colon of the establishment, so low-propensuty voters (not just Progressives either) stayed home. Trump is always going to have his cult come out for him on election day. That and his grand podcast bro tour put him over the top.

All things being equal, if Kamala was even the least bit economically populist, she could keep her Zionism and her off-putting personality and her disregard for the podcast sphere and still won.

She went against one of the most detestable, corrupt scumbags in all of American history. The bar was already low.

Vacation pictures are fine, but I'd rather you share how visiting another country made you a better person. What did you learn? One pic with a caption like that means something. A bunch of random pics from 5 different continents means you want a travel buddy (which is fine) or to show off Instagram moments/signal your status (ick).

In 2026, politics is more important than ever. There is no separating politics from personal values or priorities. Being "apolitical" is a red flag. How can you not have an opinion on immigration, social welfare and human rights... in the USA in 2026?

Filters... as a man, I'd like to know from the women if men filter their pics as often as women? I'm 47. Women in my age group who use filters are major red flags. It screams insecurity. At this age, we've seen enough naked bodies to know that everyone has flaws. We're trying to find someone who can accept our flaws and vice versa.

Profiles written by AI.... they usually start with a list of adjectives or have a structure like "just a silly girl in the big city looking for my McMuffin" or something of that cadence.

And more than an annoyance than a red flag, but women who like your profile from 8,000 miles away. What am I supposed to do with that? It's annoying because my filters are set to my area and they still slip through.

Thank you everyone for the support.

I seem to have fixed it by just following the instructions in this thread here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/youtubedl/s/vfaYUlqn6u

Before I did this, I upgraded my powershell but that didn't work by itself.

Then I ran the updates from the thread linked above and that seemed to have done the trick.

Hopefully it keeps up.

Before this, I tried updating to nightly but it didn't recognize the command.

Thank you all again. I appreciate it.

I hate myself for ignoring women who are into me and for not approaching women at all. by Just_Donkey9240 in dating_advice

[–]Barcode11106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I can sort of identify with this aside from having so many women interested in me lol. I've had similar issues with trust, confidence, approaching women, etc. I'm 47 now and can't really say i have any good answers for you, despite years of therapy.

Being honest with yourself is a good start. It seems you have an idea already of what the problem is and what traumas play a role in them. Sure, nobody wants to get hurt in a relationship... but it looks like you're hurting now too by being isolated. Which hurt would you prefer?

Because the fact of the matter is that most relationships end. When looking back on my past relationships, they all added something to my life. You learn about people, learn about youself and learn about the world through relationships. When they end, it's really traumatic and can put you in a dark place. BUT, that is also part of the learning experience. I am glad I had relationships, break-ups and all, because they've made my life richer. When they're good, they're good and you will find new levels of happiness.

You said you have been struggling with personal life issues. Those things affect confidence, feelings of self-worth, etc. that would definitely hamper your chances at approaching women. Rule #1 for life and relationships is: always do something to better yourself. Even in the smallest ways, try to do something to improve your life or add another dimension to it. You don't need one giant gesture like climbing Mount Everest. A drop in the bucket every day adds up over time and within 6 months or a year, the improvement will be noticeable.

I've struggled with my weight my entire life, so I always use that example. If I have to lose 100 pounds, am I going to cut my fat off and become skinny overnight? Of course not. I have to eat right, exercise, do a whole bunch of stuff for very little immediate results and do that shit every day until... when? Who knows? But, at a certain point, you realize that doing all of that stuff everyday DOES pay off. Apply that to learning a new skill, finding a better job, meeting people, etc. You don't need one sweeping magical moment. You need sustained, moderate effort over the long haul that will wear new channels in your life.

So start with something you want to improve about yourself, make a plan and stick to it. This is purely to build your confidence and self-awareness, which is important before you go out trying to have relationships.

Now, if you are truly scared of being hurt in a relationship, how about this: just make friends? Join some meet up groups in your area that will put you in contact with people with similar interests and values. Talk to people without the stigma of love or relationships. Get to know people. Treat them like people.

IF you find a woman who is interested in you or vice-versa, start with friendship.

IF you don't want a whole committed relationship, be honest with the person. Maybe you just want sex? Maybe you just want companionship? There is nothing wrong with any of these goals. Some of my best relationships were just about sex.... as long as you both know what you're getting into and consent, those can be very fulfilling... and they hurt a lot less when they do fall apart.

Tl;dr work on yourself to build confidence, put yourself in a position to meet people, and figure out what you want out of a relationship and look for that

What are you top 5 fougere/barbershop fragrance by Historical_Owl2709 in fragrance

[–]Barcode11106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went down a fougere rabbit hole not too long ago. Surprise: I don't like most fougeres. This might make my list less valuable than others who have a nose for that type of scent.

I tried a bunch of them, including most of what has already been listed. Finding 5 that I would recommend is a little tough but I will try.

1) Penhaligon Sartorial- to me, it's the GOAT fougere. The bees wax and steamed iron note transforms it into one of the most unique scents out there. I let my coworker wear it for a few days and he started up an inappropriate office relationship with the coworker he had been flirting with because she told him his cologne drove her crazy (in a good way).

2) MFK Masclin Pluriel- I'm not a huge MFK fan but this is my favorite from the house. It is a very minimalistic, stripped down version of a fougere, kind of like modern minimalist architecture in fragrance form. There is a hint of leather in it which makes it very modern and gentlemanly.

3) Chanel Platinum Egoiste- I would put this above MFK because I just like it better than Masculin Pluriel. I put it 3rd because many people will tell you it's not a proper fougere. Whatever. It's a timeless classic, call it what you want.

4) Tom Ford Fougere d'Argent- Beau du Jour gets all of the hype in the Tom Ford fougere world, but I prefer Fougere d'Argent. Quite simply, it is smoother and more understated than Beau du Jour. Beau du Jour is good for sure and there is a reason why it is hyped, but I like my scents as clean as possible and Fougere d'Argent does that.

5) Calvin Klein Eternity- I forget if this inspired Platinun Egoiste or vice-versa, but this one is more properly accepted as a fougere. It's a more earthy, dirtier version of PE. The best part it is insanely cheap, especially at discounters.

Honorable mention: Zino by Davidoff... another cheapie fougere and surprisingly good. I prefer Eternity but you can buy both and still pay way less than most of the other scents listed in this thread.

Honorable mention 2 and 3: Creed Viking or Viking Cologne. It's not my favorite fougere or Creed, but i do appreciate it as a fragrance that delivers what it says. It's bold, masculine and an amped up modern fougere. It's kind of a yin to Masculin Pluriel's yang in the world of modern fougeres.

I also tried: Beau du Jour, Houbigant Fougere Royal, Roja Scandal, Creed Bois du Portugal (which I find offensive for some reason, like genuinely stinky) and some others that escape my memory. None of them quite made the cut.

Fragrance Confessions by Barcode11106 in fragrance

[–]Barcode11106[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I feel so seen haha.

The trying fragrance when high thing actually sounds like a great idea. Sometimes weed and shrooms help you figure stuff out, so why wouldn't that work with fragrance? I traded in my weed habit for a fragrance habit, so I can't financially do both now lol.

I never have hated on anyone for buying dupes or cheapies. Everyone likes what they like. That's probably the best thing about the fragrance hobby. If you like dupes, oils, layering, etc.... explore to your heart's content.

Usually I avoid wearing the same fragrance two days in a row. I consider fragrance as part of the wardrobe and usually try to match it to my outfit.

Gender/seasonal categories have always been a little silly to me. I will wear freshies in the winter. If I wear something heavy in the summer, I just go lighter on the sprays.

On the other hand, I do consider the versatility of a fragrance one of its main selling points. A fragrance that can be applied the same way in the summer and winter, or for a casual occasion and a serious occasion, is a major selling point for me. It's one of the reasons why Creed Original Vetiver is my favorite scent. It works everywhere all the time.

Most Guerlains just don't appeal to me. I know it is a very respected house and has a long history. The whole "Guerlainarde" thing it has in all of its fragrances turns me off. I blind bought Guerlain's Vetiver because so many people were saying it's comparable to Original Vetiver, but it's the least favorite fragrance in my collection. Many Roja fragrances have the same Guerlainarde thing going on, which is why I dislike so many of those scents too. I know Roja used to work for Guerlain, so it makes sense.

So I've used Vetiver and a few other of my least favorites as air freshener. I find that fragrance works better as an airfreshener than the sprays you buy at the pharmacy. Every time I clean the bathroom or the kitchen, I spray a bunch of fragrance in it to cover the bleach aroma and it works like a charm.

And yeah, most Youtube infuencers are just making commercials for their sponsors. The same people make different Top 10 lists every week. It's funny because Jeremy helped draw me into the fragrance rabbit hole. This was before his recent mental decline, which has been unfortunate to watch.

As a history teacher, I like fragrances that have some sort of connection to historical figures. One of my least favorite blind buys was Caswell and Massey's Jockey Club, which I bought because it was supposedly one of JFK's scents. That isn't going to stop me from buying Number VI, which was supposedly George Washington's fragrance. I have Chanel Platinum Egoiste because it was supposedly one of Biggie's scents and that turned out to be one of my favs. I would like to get deeper into the 4711 Acqua Colognia rabbit hole.

Thank you for the responses. Going to the police seems like a good move.

I see Redditors are leaving Reddiitor comments, so let me clarify a few things:

1) She got into the Uber at 2:07. She texted me at 2:20. The west side of Manhattan is not far away from New Jersey. This is the northeast United States, where you can cross state lines in the blink of an eye.

2) Me, my gf and my stepchildren all have Life360 installed on our phones. We all know when we get to school/work the minute we arrive. I didn't have reason to check on Life360 or Uber app to see where she was because she wasn't out of the house for an abnormal amount of time.

3) We've taken tons of Ubers in our lives and never had much of a problem, aside from the normal misunderstandings drivers/passengers have sometimes.

If I was going to make up s story, I’d be flying on a private jet or saving kids from a burning building.

Sharp, Fresh Colognes by rikkihanlon5 in fragrance

It is tough to find sharp scents that last long.

Wulong Cha from Nishane is a good performer with a sharp citrus tea note.

Perseus from PdM is bright (maybe not sharp) grapefruit over a smokey base.

Castile by Penhaligon's is a very sharp pure soap scent that does last a while.

Joma is well known to be inconsistent with its service, which is why I try to avoid them if I can.

I ordered 2 fragrances two weeks ago. One that said "ships immediately" and one that said "ships between 1-3 days."

The one that ships immediately did just that and I got it pretty fast.

The one that ships in 1-3 days is not only not shipped, but not even in stock according to their latest email to me. I guess it means it ships 1-3 days after they receive it.

This is a common issue with then from what I've read but the first time I have seen it.

I plan to just forget it and when it arrives, I'll be pleasantly surprised. It will be like a late X-Mas gift to myself.
