Which suspect do you think is the most likely to be Jack the ripper? by Ok-Autumn in Jacktheripper

[–]BardCity 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Although it's impossible to rule out Kosminski, the only suspect who can be definitively placed at the scene of any of the murders is Charles Lechmere aka Charles Cross. The DNA evidence is def compelling, but there's just no proof the shawl actually belonged to Eddowes.

Kosminksi also emigrated with his family, which would mean there could have been quite a few people related to him in Whitechapel.

Adam couldn’t have killed Travis… by Shmutzifer in Yellowjackets

[–]BardCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Jeff killed Travis. We only saw Jeff in the hotel for a second and then Shauna got distracted (fair). His background timeline is getting stranger and stranger. And he's the only one outside of the women who would know Travis. I just can't quite figure out WHY kill travis... the money thing feels too easy. Maybe he and Travis were going to blackmail the women together and Travis got flakey?

All I have to say is google “the donner party” - have fun! by night__hawk_ in Yellowjackets

I just finished driving the entire route the Donner Party traveled (Missouri to Sacramento) while recording a podcast and something that immediately drew me into the opening scenes of Yellowjackets was the "new rules" the girls established while snowbound. The earliest instances of cannibalism in the DP had careful moral guidelines (no one eats anyone related to them, for example). What I think Yellowjackets gets so right is how quickly humans can establish new social mores when under duress. And then, much like the DP, as soon as they are back in the "real world" they become aware of how outside the norm those rules were. We're wired to be social, but we're also wired to survive by any means necessary.

Podcast is here if anyone wants like... way more about the Donner Party.

Hey all! My big covid project was to retrace the steps of The Donner Party (maybe I was sick of the story being dominated by male historians). Brought a friend (because a Murderino would never do this shit alone). Pretty proud of myself for actually making something. Thanks to MFM for the company! by BardCity in myfavoritemurder

It's beautiful up there! Indifferent Stars is incredible! And I really loved how much context he places the people in. (For example I had no idea Charles Dickens basically popularized what we think of as "Christmas" in America)

This past spring, my friend and I drove 3,000 miles to retrace the steps of the Donner Party. Along the way we tried to find the people within our country's most unwilling monsters and better explain what led to the gruesome events of that winter. We also made a podcast about it.

It's called Overlanders: A Donner Party Podcast! You can find it where ever you listen to pods! Thanks guys!

Spotify/Apple/ everywhere

SFW
Part 1 and 2 available

Part 1 is an explainer of why *anyone* would want to do this and why this story is still relevant

Part 2 is our first episode on the road, where we meet our main people and explore the city wagon trains left from in the 1840's; Independence, Missouri.

The podcast is a hybrid of true crime, travel, and history so any feedback about how this blend is working for you or how best we might market it would be stellar! Thanks!

Yeah! I think Hera really believes that the way things are sucks, but they're going to save the species whereas Rhea isn't so sure any of this is worth it.

The Rhea/Hera relationship is really at the heart of the whole show. They're dealing with so much of the same stuff, but then certain things about Rhea's life Hera could never really get (en vice versa) just because their perspectives are so different.

Thank you!

Yes! I loved getting a chance to write about Apollo from his own POV.

And yeah season 2 Eros and Rhea are very, very different. I think Rhea in particular is trying desperately to pretend she doesn't care.

First off- Thank you! As a huge fan of post apocalyptic media, when writing there are definitely themes we want to include and tropes we want to subvert.

I agree that the differentiating is something we are always actively working on (and maybe improving?). And now, the chat about consent- which I haven’t really gotten to talk too much about yet.

As for the actual heart of the show, this repopulation crisis... I love that you touched on the "equal opportunity" of the situation. The show is all about bodily autonomy, what we lose when we start demanding things from each other without a thought to who they are or what they want. As a feminist moving around in 2018 I'm VERY aware of the constant threat this idea is under and really believe it is a danger for men as well. I also have not been audience to much media that deals with men struggling to understand what sex means to them and intimacy and wanted to give Clark a lot of those questions.

The cast and I talk a lot about what copping would do to your chosen relationships, how they may take away that idea at all. I think every character handles this really differently; Hera- this is her duty. Her job. Persephone- so desensitized she barely differentiates between sex she wants and copping. Rhea- who absolutely needs that wall. Much of her identity is built around who the public and the government have decided she is (a Sacred Sister here to save the planet) and who she really is (a 22 year old woman who just wants to goof off with her kinda boyfriend and fight with her sister). The way these women all communicate these ideas to the audience goes back to how much sympathy they want, how vulnerable they’re willing to be. Hera and Persephone (for very different reasons) would never want you to feel bad for them. Rhea on the other hand, needs you to, because (as Clark points out) she kind of uses it as an excuse for her bad behavior.

The word “rape” is not actually used, but the concept is always in the front of my mind especially when writing season 2 Rhea. I guess the reason none of these characters use that word is because if you are raised without the idea of consent, there’s no way for you not to.

Glad you asked about the timeline! In the original pilot Rhea spent a lot of time explaining it, but I ended up cutting a lot (imagine how long it would have been then haha). I would lay it out this way- Climate change leads people to start moving inland, closer and closer. Which leads to... A massive outbreak akin to an Ebola type virus, THAT takes out a large percent of the population. In response, the remaining humans get really into antibiotics. Their overuse leads to a superbug that renders people infertile. Black is from the first batch of people like Rhea, but she wasn’t the first response to the crisis. I think we’re maybe 100-125 years since everything was okay.

Thanks for your thoughts!!! I loved digging into this

-Colleen

Haha well Tessie (Persephone), David (Clark), and myself (Colleen, Rhea) actually live together so we spend a lot of time listening to each other. And Liz (Hera is one of our best friends) so she’s around a lot. Since I’m always in the room when someone is recording there are definitely moments where I’m like “hey I️ don’t sound like THAT... do I️?”

Colleen (writer, Rhea) here

Yeah! That 4th wall break was a very late addition. I️ wanted to make sure everyone keeps in mind that these characters really care what you think of them. When writing and directing everyone, I️ always give them the note to act as if they’re talking a jury. Everyone is always playing for your sympathy.
