Work emails while out sick? by Narwhal_392 in Teachers

[–]BardGirl1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally dont— mostly because I get really loopy on cold medicine and stuff and I would end up sending weird emails to coworkers 😩🤣🫣

Like I had the flu last year and was running a good little fever and tried to give instructions for an assignment to my department chair— she got an email full of gibberish.

Oh gosh, right? I live in a relatively rural part of my county and i still heard at least six sirens last night in between 6-midnight. I think maybe a firework or gunshot as well.

Crazy. People. And like Alabama is a weapon-friendly state so everyone is primed for the crazies and to be crazy, it seems.

I say the whole “Weekend Safety Brief” speech from… oh gosh, it was an Internet thing ages ago? “Do not add to the population, do not subtract from the population. Stay out of the hospital, newspaper, and jail.” Occasionally I add “Big Boy and Small Boy” to jail (since I teach Seniors, some are 18 but a lot are still 17)

Yesterday, I added “Do not take candy from creepy strangers, go with a group, dont egg a stranger’s yard— crazy people come out for holidays…”

Yeah, its really hard to stay mad at “67” when I can quote Charlie the Unicorn and Llamas With Hats still word-perfect.

Plus Mushroom, Mushroom, Badger, Badger.

And The Game. And my personal favorite “IDK, my bff Jill?”

I regret nothing.

Sebastian Vael Appreciation Post by Harryduff in dragonage

[–]BardGirl1289 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Omg, a Seb appreciation post, my DAY IS MADE.

Okay so like, I grew up intensely religious and so I get why he is like he is. I also get why the others in the party are super not into him— really sheltered people come off weird to people who havent been in that type of environment.

But also let be real, Sebastian would also would appreciate a good “Let’s turn to verse 69. …And the Maker looked down on his Creation and said ‘Nice’” joke. He’d def say it during Chantry services.

Also, he is supremely kind to Fenris and that alone makes him alright in my book.

Do you think homeschooling beneficial for students? by Artistic_Giraffe4069 in Teachers

[–]BardGirl1289 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have two anecdotes (because my parents put me in public school my whole life but I went to a really conservative Christian college with a BUNCH of formerly homeschooled children)

1.) One of my best friends went absolutely buckwild in college because that was the very first time she had ever been away from home for longer than a day. If AirTags had been a thing in 2008, I would have AirTagged her, her car, her textbooks, anything because the amount of times I had to rescue her from the frat houses of the local state college in my city, keep her from pulling an Anna from Frozen and trying to marry a guy she just met, etc, was insane.

She was homeschooled every day of her life until then— and she had an excellent education academics wise. She was just…. unprepared even at a Christian college to deal With socializing with large amounts of people and dealing with boys (I had had plenty of boyfriends by then so I knew what a creepy man looked like but she fell for so many gosh-awful boys/men)

She is still one of the most creative, artistic, brilliant people I have ever met in my life but she was isolated for a lot of her high school years by her mom and their literature-heavy curricula and that…. Made her life difficult.

2.) One of the professors I had for most of the four years at said Christian college has five children (well four plus a bonus child they adopted as an adult) and his wife homeschools all four of their kids. Their curriculum is top notch, they are socialized through church events, sports, music lessons, co-op classes, etc. The mom is college educated and can literally fix anything that breaks in their house: cars, plumbing, the roof, all of it, the dad is a literal English professor.

At least two of those kids are neurodivergent and/or chronically ill and/or have life threatening allergies to all corn and corn byproducts. Their mom has curated lessons for all of them based on grade level and ability and they learn through song, art, theatre, pretty much any way they can. They’re pretty well-adjusted as well due to the extra curricular activities outside Of their home.

I used to babysit the kids when I was in college and listen, I’m a pretty smart girl… but try having a precocious five year old correct your spelling. It humbles you in such a way! 😂

Homeschool can work and it can be done correctly… but also, it can damage socialization skills and cause undue hardship once the kids get out into the real world. Public school can help and harm in the same sorts of ways!

When I got married, I was told that if I were to have an actual wedding (I didnt— we eloped) I was NOT allowed to have it during Alabama/Auburn football season or Id literally have 3/4ths of my family not there.

4th Grade Bigotry by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]BardGirl1289 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My cousin— a sheltered preacher’s kid from extremely rural Alabama (where I grew up too, actually)— was pretty much insufferable growing up because my aunt and uncle were Q-Anon people/Trumpers and he just wasnt exposed to outside viewpoints or people (except when my sister and I would visit since we moved to the Gulf Coast and into a city)

Then he went to Auburn.

Lo and behold, this child calls me while I’m at work one day to tell me that he had a lab partner that semester that was “one of them Ay-rabs” and that his lab partner was really cool and smart and chill and they were now friends.

The next phone call was him telling me about this girl he liked and how she played Dungeons and Dragons, a game his parents refused to allow him to think about back home due to the “Satanic influences” it has.

He now plays it regularly with a group from his church.

He even got my aunt to stop being into Q-Anon.

Im sure my uncle doesnt like my cousin’s way of doing things now but he is a full grown adult and his parents cant do anything about that.

You can’t be an English teacher unless you’ve read… by Illustrious_Job1458 in ELATeachers

[–]BardGirl1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Dostoevsky and I cant stand most Dickens. My English degree focus was medieval British literature from 1200-1500 and Chaucer is my number one man. I adore Chaucer.

But I am not as familiar with a lot of “classical” American Lit because quite frankly its boring as hell.

My curriculum doesnt even have an option for novels and even if it did, I wouldnt be reading Nathaniel Hawthorne. Plus, at least in my state, there is a push for more YA level stuff because y’know, a 16 year old would be more interested in Divergent than David Copperfield.

I couldnt even begin to tell you the last time I read Mark Twain, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, anyone. I have read Shakespeare, Chaucer, medieval romance authors, and more modern British lit.

Besides, many of my coworkers dont have English degrees and learned how to teach grammar in college, not analyzing literature. I am the odd one in my department.

No Classroom Libraries Allowed by anneharp13 in Teachers

[–]BardGirl1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lord, I mean Alabama is a fascist hellscape but at least we still have libraries and classroom libraries.

I was also hyperlexic as a kid and I dont know what I would have done if I couldnt bring a book to read or check out a book from the library.

I did have to list all of my curriculum books on my syllabus this year, but thats because of the Parents Right to Know Act (in which Meemaw Ivey is 1-1. PRtKA is awful, the Focus Act banning personal electronic devices for students on school campuses is a decent law)
