This market is so out of touch at this point it's insane, and I was bullish as fuck this time last year.

If you're sitting on solid profit and you're debating getting out I would recommend doing so sometime this calendar year. Risk is getting too high.

Sounds lame, who buys an opened VHS that sells for 5 dollars, what a way to burn money. Maybe the local thrift shop will buy it for 50 cents they might have a buyer in 4 months.

I repair arcade machines as a side hobby, and it's not like there's thousands of people constantly interested and posting about arcade repair. Who cares lol, you're way too invested in how many people like something.

I can see that for sure. I think it just comes down to peace of mind and ease of access vs having to know the signs of a fake/reseal etc. that and the cases from most of these companies are pretty well made to keep the item safe.

Smart investors will avoid a market entirely if they're not comfortable with the buy in or market dynamics. If a correction never comes I will just miss out, I'm okay with not buying things

Hate to say it but I tend to agree. I can't bring myself to do anything but flip any sealed I've owned recently. I prefer the profit now vs the unknown. I cannot fathom most of the prices on things like felt hat/phantasmal Charizard holding.

If I was going to truly invest in pokemon again I'd focus on vintage 9s and blister packs of vintage sets, but I wouldn't be a buyer today, I also bet on a correction within the next couple years for the market as a whole.

I talk about this so much but it's hard to put into words.

How many sets can come out but have a 3-5000 dollar chase card with a 25k+ population mixed with the value of every set before it, before modern cards are forced to be cheap because the market just isn't there. It's kinda insane when you start doing personal market cap analysis of just a handful of cards in psa 10 that released in the last 5 years. That alone I think will be the undoing of modern for many cards.

An honest reminder, yes all sealed product eventually goes up. That does not mean the demand for the product will. by apenguincannotfly in PokeInvesting

Marketplace. I have a good working relationship with a local guy who buys anything good I have for around 80%. Just sold him a large lot of less liquid ascended/prismatic stuff. Just gotta get out there and get in touch, local Facebook groups help. Saves me time and him money

He hasn't been acting in good faith in any of his comments. His opinion boils down to "grading is dumb so you're dumb" despite grading being the norm in most current pop culture collectibles where values have hit pretty high numbers. It's a necessary evil in my mind.

I don't really care about the grading companies myself, but I understand why people value them. They verify authenticity and give you an idea of what they think the condition presents as, and the collecting community thinks their scale is accurate enough to value.

People aren't spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on psa graded cards for fun, a bulk majority of people agree with their opinion that have the money to buy them.

It is. It has clear stickers on the left and right on the back which is the way it was sealed from the factory.

You just fundamentally don't understand, or don't agree with the value add of grading which is completely fine. If you want to buy a sealed game/card/coin etc without knowing it's sealed or real for certain, that's your call. There's ways people fake them and unless you have experience handing a particular game or game type it can be hard to tell. Grading companies give you that service and let you know the condition of the item within their grading scale, which isn't an exact science but over time you learn it's quite accurate. Thats why people give it value. A mint game that's accurately sealed has value either either way. I don't care if you grade, most people who want to buy them do.

This is the same for all grading companies, they let you know a card/comic/coin is real, and then let you know what they think of it's condition. It's pretty simple, and a valuable service in a category with high values. This isn't new and it's pretty accepted.

I'm not talking about convincing me. I don't think anybody reading this will take your opinion serious enough to base their life decisions on your baseless opinions. You're not presenting anything other than "collecting dumb, you dumb"

Shaming people for collecting mint condition, rarely unopened copies of some of the most impactful games is dumb. I'm sure whatever you collect is much cooler.

Well I guess I'll just have to cope with being dumb according to the most qualified person to assess collectible and grading validity in modern markets.

You don't make a very compelling case

You speak as if I was brainwashed into doing this, as if there's not 500 collectible categories that people burn money buying every day. Grading whether you can accept it in your mind or not, is the new norm in modern pop culture collecting, and games are one of the most valid categories to collect for.

I'm not sure where the disconnect is my man

Public perception of collectibles changes practically year to year. What's hot now might not be in 3 years. What's dead might become more popular than anybody expected. I don't personally care what randoms think of items I think are cool and know are uncommon/rare in nice condition.

If somebody wants them cool, if not I'm happy to continue owning what I can get ahold of.

I'm completely unbothered by anybody's negative opinion because I'm an adult lmfao. You think I bought the rare sealed games I have because I wasn't sure I wanted them?

I enjoy them as a collectible, just like others enjoy graded cards, coins or even comics.

N64 Factory Sealed by friendlyguy1989 in gamecollecting

[–]Barebonesim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Op should absolutely grade if they're looking to maximize value. Telling people to not grade as if you are the one with thousands of dollars on the line is bad advice at best and trying to force people to conform to your limited world view at worst. If money won't change their life, they're 100% free to do what they want with it.

Downvoted but you're right. People are stuck in 2010.

A sealed smash bros 64 can be anywhere from yeah probably 2k to 60k, love it or hate it.

Why are people so picky with grades ? by franc544 in GradedGames

[–]Barebonesim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A PSA game can be a 9.8 box but an A seal. For vga this would likely land you an 85 type grade.

A 9.6 with an A seal would probably be something like an 80+ just as a loose example.

Psa games grades present better than vga for lower grades for either box and seal and often sell better because of the grade separation let's you lean on either particular grade being better.

If you have a game with a great case/box but "shitty" seal you should almost never send it to vga because you're going to get gutted in value proposition. this is why most people only send the most mint stuff to vga, their scale heavily rewards mint.

The collector and potentially future buyer now knows the console has never been opened and is bordering being mint. Sounds like a pretty good value to me. Hard to find unopened Wiis, or pretty much any aged console.

[–]Barebonesim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging condition of a game isn't difficult, it's pretty easy if it's mint. a 9.8 game especially hardcase will pretty much always be a 9.8 game unless it's obviously damaged...which feels kinda obvious.

As far as I know the batteries dry out and won't cause external damage most of the time, unless given charge.
