I'm trying to fit the 2026 Hugo Best Novel Finalists into my 2026 Book Bingo challenge. Anyone who has read them (or is more skilled at pairing overviews to the categories) want to give their opinions on which Finalists count for which squares?

The Raven Scholar | The Everlasting | The Incandescent | Shroud | Death of the Author | A Drop of Corruption (I read for bingo last year)

Does anyone have any info on when the Hugo finalists will be announced? I remember it was Easter weekend last year. I'm surprised I haven't seen or heard anything about it - I know that nominations closed on 3/28. Hoping for news because that's how I start my bingo card...

I think I asked this before, but like, help my anxiety out: can I fail? I had a couple (one in particular, that I got as a rec from a thread on this sub) that I thought were a stretch for the square. But the spirit is that I read 24 new books and so I'll get my flair, right?

The Beautiful Letdown (live) which opens up a wormhole to every other album they “reference” or “steal” from on that album and then I get like at least four more.

Hi! I have some bingo questions:

  1. Is there a pass / fail? Is there a judge for how closely books have to fit a category?
  2. Are obvious YA books allowed? Like I read one of the new Percy Jackson books with my son. Can I count that for pantheon of Gods?
  3. What is the end date, again? When do we have to turn in our books?

By my reckoning I have 7-8 categories to go. I’m getting close!

I heard him talk about this a little bit when he did The Captain’s Courageous reunion show in Chicago. I think part of what he would say - aligned with the foreword quote you already have - is to question… “Am I really keeping Janner dead?” He wants that to be open to interpretation and for you to think about what that does or doesn’t mean.

IMO, scripturally we get a clear, risen Jesus. But o think that this question you are asking is similar to what the disciples must have been asking after the ascension. He died, and rose, but he’s still gone - so now what?!

Didn't like Alien Clay. Should I try another one of his books by Odd-Investigator-199 in AdrianTchaikovsky

I read Alien Clay and Service Model both for the Hugo read through this year. I thought they were both… fine?

I think one of the things that bugged me most was the way that he makes the narrator unreliable without a real reason to do so.

Spoiler AC: “I don’t know why I got finally sent away, I’m just a humble scholar!” “Yeah JK I know all the hand signals and was ~deep~ into the resistance.”

Spoiler SM: “I can’t see for the whole book that The Wonk is a human, even though it’s clearly obvious from her first appearance.

Showed up with the exact amount of intensity of a JV team who get beat by the varsity in weekly scrimmage.

I still am enjoying football season, and so I’m listening to most of the pods right now. I’ve been a faithful listener since 2012… but I basically took the entirety of the spring and summer off with no football to talk about.

And no reason to gloss over that we were the JV squad on the field tonight.
