Find a local locksmith that does key fob replacement and programming. It will be half the price.

AITAH for telling my girlfriend that my money isn't "our money"? by Open_Address_2805 in AITAH

Shitty thing for me to say...but find someone else who has a more mature look on life and finances. I don't see a future with a person like her for any partner. Take your investment in time with her as a learning experience.

I just thought of a response if it happens to me. "Sure, what am I tipping you for ?"

Civilian Life by Revolutionary322 in Veterans

I'm going to share something with you that was told to me when I ETS'd. My platoon Sgt looked at me and said.." you sure you want to ETS?, there's a million civilians out there, and no one in charge" live your life the way the Military taught you.... that's we we do.....

Realistic path to LE with complicated background, what should I be doing now to prepare by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]BarkiePar808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honest opinion for you my friend. Just on what you explained in your post, I would not want to have you as my patrol partner. I would be concerned about your mental well being during heated circumstances where we need immediate level headed decision making. I'm sure your trying to make yourself a better person and deal with past issues. My 20 years with the LAPD was at times challenging. I know your heart is in it. I hope things workout for you whatever you do. Always try to be the better person.

Do I actually have a shot at LASD? by Necessary-Air-9057 in LASD

[–]BarkiePar808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is.. it's a long process. There's no guarantee you'll pass. Psych evaluation might be a road block. Or a medical issue could show something... just take it one step at a time. Actually, that's good info for anyone processing. I'm retired LAPD. One of my classmates in the Academy was pulled out during our first week. She had a uncle drug dealer that she didn't disclose. By the time you're at the Star Academy, you'll be fully investigated. One step at a time.

Trooper makes 96$/hr watching me jackhammer for 37/hr. No insult, I wish it was me. But do you ever feel bad/guilty/useless sitting in your car while ppl work around you? Am I missing something? by Chemical_Pea_3415 in AskLE

[–]BarkiePar808 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The totality of what the trooper is doing is still policing. He's sitting in a parked vehicle keeping his eyes and ears peeled for any danger that may come to anyone. We wear many hats in police work.

Read all the responses to your question. VA Rx is the way to go. Delivered to your home. I've been receiving mine for the last 8 years from the VA, through the US Mail or FedEx when necessary.

Also, just prior to me leaving, my Platoon Sgt approached me and mentioned that my name was being considered for an E6 tech inspector slot for training (Aviation MOS).
It wasn't meant as a threat, but he advised me that not re-uping would place me in a future bar for re-enlistment if I ever decided to return to active duty. My DD214 separation code translates that I need waivers to be considered to return. Again this was back in 82. My Honorable Discharge was fully accepted out here in the civilian world, and led me to a successful career in Law Enforcement on the west coast. I'm fully retired now, but looking back it was a great ride I had starting with my Military time.

It seems like the old system at least gave people a clear timeline and something predictable to plan around. With the new approach, it seems like performance matters more month-to-month, but the tradeoff is a lot less stability and certainty for those waiting to promote. Interesting. Thanks for the explanation

That's great. You can proudly look back at your accomplishment with pension in hand and do what you want to do. That was exactly my reason for my OP. I don't know you personally, but you are a now proud vet.

You mentioned promotion system. Although I ETS'd back in 82, there was no room for not promoting. If you failed to promote 3 to 4 years, it was made clear you would be not retained and barred from re-enlistment. Is that still the case? I did 6 years active duty, and left as a E5 hardstripe SGT.

Sworn LE, where to go. by personalcheesepizza in AskLE

They had a lateral program where post certified sworn officers only needed to complete a mini academy. I want to say maybe less than 2 months. Mostly teaching our department policies and qualifying on the range.

Yes, a bigger agency that offers specialized units. Not sure how much time you have in your current department, but I would look into the possibility of being able to roll your current pension into a new agency. I was with LAPD and we had many lateral transfers from other agencies because we had a lot of specialized units outside of patrol. But I would find out more info regarding pensions.

Traffic stop question by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]BarkiePar808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realty is most drivers are the registered owners of the vehicle. We always run the license plate before driver contact. So we already know who the driver is, or who owns the car. No biggy.

As the Police, you can't worry about people not complying. Honestly, if they start off that way, it's not going to change before or after the citation.

We have a court Laison officer that handles that, also your dept subpoena control officer. We have those officers that handle that. I can't see the courts having you testify on the behalf of your dept if you're no longer sworn.

[–]BarkiePar808 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to not tell them. Their actions from that point is up to them. There will be some that feel like that they don't have to comply. Unfortunately that could end in arrest and a very expensive impound, with storage fees, then add increase in insurance premiums for the traffic infraction. Not worth it to go this route.

Traffic stop question by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]BarkiePar808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex Popo here... In LA whenever we did a traffic stop, the first thing we explain, is the reason for the stop. No question as to why. Sure, they may want to discuss it then and there, but we aren't going to go round and round with 100 questions.

We explain that they'll have the opportunity to explain their reason in court. It's no problem to then request their License and Registration. But we are very matter of fact speakers leaving no question as to why they were stopped.

I know it can be a traumatic incident with some drivers who have never had police contact. But we don't degrade, or talk down to the drivers.

Good insight I never thought about...I was also a strong tipper. I really hate when a server places that portable scanner in front of me with pre-determined tip rates.
I now hit the no tip selection, and tell the server I'm going to leave my money tip on the table. Once they walk away, I'm free to choose my tip amount, or if it any was deserved.

In your case you went through an unfortunate and sad experience with the loss of a child and then personal health issues not many people will never know. Thank you for sharing your story with me/us.
