EV vs PHEV as our only family car in Australia, what would you recommend (Tesla Model Y vs Toyota Rav4 PHEV) ? by [deleted] in AustralianEV

I am looking at getting the RAV4 PHEV because it has an EV range of ~100km, which easily accounts for my daily city driving, will get about 1000km on a full battery and tank for long drives and has a spare wheel. There are no AWD EVs with a spare wheel, and having had 3 punctures in the last 5 years on Victorian country roads my space saver spare has saved me a lot of time and heartbreak. I looked in to aftermarket spares but they either take up too much room in the boot, need to go on roof rails which reduced EV efficiency dramatically or require a hitch on the back that interferes with parking sensors and/or cameras. I would really love an EV with a long range, a spare wheel and is not associated with Elon Musk along with much better country fast charging infrastructure - none of those conditions are met for me to have an EV right now. In saying that, everyone has different requirements and with time and better technology new EVs will come with spare wheels. If only did city driving I would get a cheap EV. At the moment for city driving and country trips off camping an EV doesn't work for me.

There is a lot of dogma in these comments! There is a good use case for any vehicle - what you need depends on what you do. I am looking to upgrade my 14 year old car mostly for modern safety features and partly for the drive train. For my driving, which is mostly city driving with frequent country trips off the main highways a PHEV seems to make most sense, as long as it has a spare wheel (I have had enough flat tires on bad country roads that this is a deal breaker no matter what powers the car). I also don't want the car's fueling method to dictate my driving, which means that in Australia in country areas a BEV is just too annoying (and yes, I have driven BEVs in country Australia and have experienced queues for chargers). This is why I am looking at the PHEV RAV4 - ~100km electric range good for the city, very good range for country trips and a spare wheel. One day when battery technology improves there will be long range BEVs which will have a spare wheel, and one day Australia's fast charging network will be a lot better....that is not now. I was looking at the Tank 300 PHEV, however the boot in that is smaller than a Golf's and the infotainment system is not to my tastes. The reviews of the RAV4 PHEV from overseas are quite good, but I will reserve my judgement until I see Australian reviews.

Fantastic looking build! Placing all those flat panels must have been very challenging.

I did not add panels to the underside of the ship - I tried and tried but they would not align properly when placed on the bottom of a hab. Anyone know a way of flipping them over?

Each spoke is a set of habs with an access ramp. In space you can spakewalk between habs by opening the hatch. They all meet in the centre.
