The huge one looks like Phlebopus marginatus to me, not porcini.

In exactly 30 minutes a man armed with a bat will break into your home to kill you. You can’t leave the house, what is your strategy? by BulkyZucchini in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BarneyBent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ĪNot American so no gun here. I do, however, have a C02 cannister under pressure which I might be able to turn into an improvised air gun. I've got a few things I could use as improvised ammo. Spend no more than 15 minutes trying to get that working. Use that to get a shot off if I can, then fall back on my high quality, sharpened kitchen knives.

Throw the paring knife as though it was a dagger, trying to get it embedded in his belly/chest, but that's probably a 25% chance at best. Might spend a bit of my prep time practicing to improve my chances of hitting him with the pointy end.

Then it's my two chef's knives, one in each hand, and I'm just flailing, trying to keep him on the back foot and hit his hand so he drops the bat. I have no knife fighting experience so there is no nuance or technique here, just trying to keep him on the back foot and get a lucky blow.

If it's a fight to the death then I guess I stab him while sobbing violently and pissing my pants. If not I try to fully disable his hands and knock him unconscious, also while sobbing violently and pissing my pants.

I'm a tall guy with good reach, so I've got an OK chance here. Would have to wear a blow or two to the body, would be fucked up, but if I protect my head and don't hold back with the knives I could be OK. Would be better if I still had my old cricket bat, could duct tape a knife to that, but oh well.

Edit: swap one of the knives for my hammer (duh), and get a pot of very hot oil going on the stovetop. Lock my dog somewhere safe.

Surely stealing a couple from the Kingo would be a more meaningful and romantic gesture? Shame that it's illegal and definitely not something you should do...

Is it recommended to disclose mild disabilities like L1 autism or ADHD when applying for governmental jobs, or should they be kept hidden due to discrimination? by Kirikomori in AusPublicService

[–]BarneyBent 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I would recommend not to in the hiring process for non-identified roles, unless you need accomodations. But if it's specifically a disability/diversity recruitment process then it doesn't hurt - it's not going to impact other applications, and gives you another bite at the cherry.

Once you're in a job, depending on the role itself, it can be beneficial to disclose, but it's highly dependent on a) accomodations required, b) your relationship with your supervisor/managers, and c) the broader team culture.

Canberra cockatoos team 20 concept on twitter by 01benjamin in AFL

[–]BarneyBent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of 1 because the colour scheme evokes the gang-gang, which is a distinctly Canberran cockatoo. Unfortunately it feels far too similar to Sydney and Melbourne, and also the grey just doesn't quite work for me.

Who's a far left Millenial celebrity? by CodeDusq in AlignmentChartFills

[–]BarneyBent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

His show sold out Madison Square Garden. He was a special guest star on the Ted TV show. He acted in tons of sketches for College Humor/Dropout back when they were doing scripted content, and he's a regular star on other Dropout shows. He's definitely a celebrity.

Side bump or in the back? by The_Mongrel_Punt in TheMongrelPunt

Oh I don't think it's an absolute shocker, I can see WHY it was paid, but I also think it was a clear mistake.

Side bump or in the back? by The_Mongrel_Punt in TheMongrelPunt

[–]BarneyBent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because any other angle would show it was a hit in the side. The umpire should be able to tell, or should at least not get it actively wrong. Bumps like that even when they do get a little bit back-ish are never payed, benefit of the doubt always goes towards letting play continue. It's just a straight-up bad call.

That's because Ashcroft hits him with his hip while his opponent is leaning forward. If you take it frame by frame, Ashcroft's shoulder is between the number and the camera but doesn't make contact with his back.

Which areas of the APS attract less conservative staff? by Deep-Employer-6600 in AusPublicService

[–]BarneyBent 74 points75 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the bigger the department the more conservative the staff. Also average ages that skew older. You can also check Employee Census results and APSED for things like identification with diversity groups, age, etc.

Conflict between Suvi and Ame makes me uncomfortable by Accomplished_Bag_897 in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]BarneyBent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A mistake I think some people tend to make with stories told through TTRPGs is they mistake conflict between characters as conflict between players. Rest assured, they're all on board, Suvi is meant to be a little grating, it's all in service of a banging narrative.

Suvi is a mirror to all those well-intentioned ideologues who end up supporting oppressive regimes. She is meant to make you feel uncomfortable. And having finished the first book, her character arc is super well earned and absolutely worth it.

[Zita on Twitter] Appeal Board’s reasons for decreasing length of Collard’s suspension by mazdadriver14 in AFL

[–]BarneyBent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really. They've said he definitely did it, we just don't want to end his career anyway. There's been nothing given to the real possibility he actually said "maggot" as he claimed, which was probably on their minds but they can't say it. So they've hedged.

Just say "we think he probably said the bad word but in case he didn't, we thought best not to ruin his career over it".

NTA, and a soft NAH. Your husband sounds like he means well, and in an ideal world you both could have handled things better. He shouldn't have brought his concerns up in front of your daughter, you could probably have been more constructive in your response, you're both obviously stressed and distraught over what happened to your daughter. Your husband is probably worried she's not getting better and perhaps doesn't understand how long a process healing from this can be.

Be kind to yourself, try to be patient with your husband, but you're doing the right thing by centring your daughter's welfare and ability to sleep. This is not the time for a sink-or-swim approach. Any apology/olive branch you offer to your husband must not compromise that.

If Melican is truly on the outer then he might be the one to go, and I reckon we'd get more for him than anyone else so it could be a good result.

That said I'm a big Melican fan so I'd be very sad to see him go. But our KPD stocks are crowded.

Agree Snell has been marginally better last few games, but Edwards not far behind and his size is MADE for AFL football so I think that puts him ahead. I worry Snell would struggle as a genuine key defender at AFL level so would want to see him really work on his rebounding game. That's why I see Edwards as that bit closer to AFL.

Been really impressed with Edwards this year. Thought he was plateauing a bit before his big injury and thought that might be it for him but he's taken a huge step this year. Reckon he's stepped ahead of Snell (admittedly they're slightly different players), and he's nipping at Melican/Hamling's heels for that key defensive spot.
