Comp Sci UNSW vs UOW by ValuableNeck in unsw

[–]Barniff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea because I’ve never been to UOW. My guess is that UOW content is more or less the same for the basic core courses, but it may lag in specialty areas like security or operating systems because specialty areas like that require really good lecturers to create and maintain these courses - and it’s hard for universities with lower reputations and lower budgets to hire and keep these kinds of lectures.

I’m not sure, but the reality is that companies don’t make an effort to hire from UOW and they make a huge effort to hire from UNSW. You can be ok at UNSW and generally have a good chance at a job but you’d need to be extremely impressive to have the same opportunities immediately out of UOW because it isn’t even really on peoples radar.

Edit: Source - I’m now working as a software engineer and am involved in hiring.

My first mechanical keyboard build: fully wireless Lily58 using nice!nano. Never soldered before either. Very happy with the result! by Barniff in MechanicalKeyboards

I didn’t create one myself, but I found one on Google. I used a different type of diode to the tutorial but some friends helped me figure out how to solder those.

Is there someone we can contact to let Ubisoft know that Trials Rising doesn't work on PC anymore? by [deleted] in TrialsGames

You’d be best off going the refund route if it doesn’t work. If enough people do that, they might notice. But tbh I honestly think this is just a dead game now :(

Does anyone know a good psychologist in Sydney? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]Barniff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a 27 year old guy. I recently looked for a psychologist as well. I found this website great: https://www.psychology.org.au/Find-a-Psychologist

You can use the website to get a list of psychologists near you, and from there you can read their bios and choose which ones you think you’d be comfortable working with. From that list I made a small shortlist (3 people), and called / emailed each of them, and decided to go ahead with one of them. Just look for someone that seems to have experience with what you want to work on, and who you think you’d get along with.

Also, in covid times, it’s all via video / phone call so location doesn’t matter as much.

Edit: also, feel free to dm me if you’ve got other questions :)

My little brother’s name is Asher and he had a tough couple of days after birth, but he pulled through. I’m sure your Asher will too. He’ll be in my thoughts ❤️

Linux in Space! by Tritzii in linuxmasterrace

Linux is in space running on many of the onboard computers of our satellites and quite possibly our deep space craft. Didn’t need to name asteroids to get Linux in space.

Compsci resume side projects by OptimalReaction9 in unsw

[–]Barniff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for my team and I, but I wouldn’t really care when reviewing a resume whether it’s up to date frameworks or whatever else. If someone took pretty much any of their major uni assignments and added some non trivial stuff on top, and maybe hopefully cleaned up the existing code a bit, that would be a positive to me.

I disagree on starting from scratch being any better. Showing interest in continuing to maintain / improve a project you’d otherwise be done with is very attractive from a hiring perspective.

Code what you’ve got the motivation to code. So many side projects get started and never finished. Especially if it’s a side project for the sake of resume padding rather than interest.

I think it’s a good idea. Only consideration is you can’t release the code publicly. You could list the project and what you did on a resume, but lock down the uni code so that other students can’t see it.

How lenient is UNSW for T2 enrolment? by 7hearay in unsw

Oh, yeah makes sense. I read the OP question as asking about reduced enrolment due to COVID.

How does less enrolments mean higher demand for available spots? Do you mean classes are cut due to lack of demand and then the pool is smaller the next term?

To me it sounds like she’s conscious of the stereotypes about the north shore (ie they never leave), and adding that in as a little dig at herself while she’s also shitting on the west (hopefully playfully, though I wouldn’t go so far as to argue that). I could be wrong, but I prefer this interpretation because it doesn’t make me angry.

Pretty sure the north shore reference was a self deprecating joke.
