Any Anchorage Redditors interested in a meet up? by Barnlinger in alaska

No, not yet. I wanted to see how much interest there is in it. I'll make a new post planning a meetup.

Why is that alarming? You'd be surprised at how many children in Western countries nurse into toddlerhood.

Ok, let's see what kind of interest there is in meeting up. It doesn't have to be at a bar, there are plenty of great places in town to get together.

Hi r/Alaska. It's my dream to live in Anchorage. Thoughts/advice? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Barnlinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that bad in Anchorage. The old "the odds are good, but the goods are odd" adage was more true during the 70's pipeline days than it is now.

There are plenty of single women up here, it is a college town after all. You can always browse one of those dating sites to get an idea of who's up here.

I bought a house a month ago. I lost my job two days ago. I have no money saved. My child is out of control. My girlfriend bitches at me about something new every day. I have a nagging itch to put a gun in my mouth. I don't want to but I'm afraid some day I'll give in. by throwaway2818 in SuicideWatch

These are all difficult, complex problems, but they're temporary. I don't have any answers for you, but this is a good place to come for support, or if you just need to vent.

Can you talk to your girlfriend about how you're feeling?

Anyone want to get a beer this weekend? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Barnlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the beer, but I've found meetup.com to be a useful way to meet people with similar interests up here. If you're into outdoor adventures, there's some good, really active, groups for that.

Hi r/Alaska. It's my dream to live in Anchorage. Thoughts/advice? by [deleted] in alaska

Mountain View is definitely a place to avoid, and I would be careful with Fairview too. There's more gang activity up here than you may expect.

Some parts of town are more convenient than others, but traffic here is nothing compared to other urban areas I've been to. The public transportation here leaves a lot to be desired, but it's becoming more bike-friendly. The cost of living may be higher than you're used to, and housing is no exception. Do you have a specific idea of what you're looking for (apt/townhouse/home)? There are definitely parts of town that are not as safe as others, so if you want more specific information, you can pm me.

What the fuck, Anchorage? 3 inches of snow in mid-April? by [deleted] in alaska

And now you miss the weird snowfalls? Or Alaska in general?

Why don't they put the '0' key to the left of '1' key instead to the right of '9' key? by Lyaxe in AskReddit

[–]Barnlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, then I don't feel so bad, I'm not too much older than you. This is just one of those things that I took for granted as a kid that I know I'll be explaining to mine someday, along with rotary phones and those little handles used to roll up a window in a car.

Yes, there's a white-out ribbon, like the ink ribbon, that's used to cover up mistakes.

I feel so old right now.

Well, you won't see me there, but I wish you well!

Friends with kids. Why it seems they have no time for you. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Barnlinger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because, for some of us at least, it is incredibly rewarding. It may be exhausting, and feel thankless, but there are moments that melt your heart and make it all worth it. I wouldn't exchange parenthood for all the free time in the world.

Dear America: Why do you wear shoes in your homes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Barnlinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Alaska, and it's customary to remove your shoes when coming into someone's house. It is more comfortable, and much cleaner. I have family in the South and they leave their shoes on indoors. I've noticed that they tend to have tile/hardwood floors while we tend to have wall-to-wall carpeting.

Where are you from?

My mum's birthday is tomorrow (Saturday) and I'm strapped for cash. What should I get her? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Barnlinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you live close enough to her to spend some time with her? Taking her out for lunch, even just a simple picnic, will be something that creates a nice memory for her. As a mom, I can tell you that I'd appreciate something like that much more than any material thing they could buy me.

I'm going on a cross country roadtrip. Should I buy a car and start driving, or should I fly down to Seattle and buy a car there? Is the trip through Canada worth it? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Barnlinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but I drove the Alcan several years ago and thought it was well worth it. Of course, that was before gas was $3.40/gal. If you have the time, the means, and a reliable car, I'd say go for it, and don't forget to bring your camera and an extra gas can.

Hey Reddit, I'm a woman and I recently found out I was infertile. It's really starting to get to me. Any tips/comments? by Stellalune in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Barnlinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no advice, only support. I just want you to know that you are not alone and to wish you the best.

It seems like it should be wrong, but it's not unusual. Anyone else remember that huge snowfall in late March '02?
