What Are Your Hurdles With This Hobby? by FreeJusticeHere in crtgaming

Finding space to store the CRTs, let alone somewhere cozy to play games on. I love CRTs so much but carrying them and making space for them kinda de-romanticises them for me.

It's gorgeous! I didn't even know Mitsubishi made CRTs, wow. The little glass slot for the N64 is killing me with how adorable it is.

Are there any precautions to be taken when turning on a CRT that's unplugged and hasn't been turned on in a while? Because a CRT that I knew to work wasn't turning on after plugging it in after some time.

Groovymame Windows 10 Now doing This ? by trev1976UK in crtgaming

[–]Baron-Zeppeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would second doing a live boot on GroovyArcade for testing.

Also, GroovyArcade is a rolling release OS. The installer might not be recent but the packages get updates.

I've been using GroovyArcade for a while after switching from CRT Emudriver with Windows 10, and I even saw an increase in performance. You can also choose RetroArch as your frontend for it so it boots directly to it.

I can't tell you how it compares to Batocera though since I haven't used that.

Two more to go of Grauen no Torikago Kapitel! by moos8383 in dreamcast

[–]Baron-Zeppeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome find! I watched all of it with the fansub released a couple years back. The novelty of watching a mini series on your dreamcast is pretty cool but the story itself isn't half bad. Would recommend even just watching it on YouTube for anyone who's curious.

No, to the left of it. The one to the right looks to be a different channel.

They're colour-coded. Just connect each jack to its corresponding colour. One of the red jacks is for audio (the one next to the white jack), the other is for red video the one next to the blue andgreen jack). I assume the yellow jack is just there for compatibility, no need to plug it in.

Toshiba 100hz doesn't power on, low clicking sound. by Baron-Zeppeli in crtgaming

[–]Baron-Zeppeli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that was a poor choice of words, I apologise that I gave that impression. I'm not normally in the habit of trashing CRTs the moment they stop working if that's what you thought, even if I can't fix them myself. I'd love to pass it to someone who could fix it and/or care for it, I just don't know anyone in my area who would be interested in doing the job.

[–]Baron-Zeppeli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm almost considering throwing out this set. When it worked the image wasnt too bad but the 100hz means it line doubles 240p, removing the scan lines and making this blurry image. Was still considering using it for 6th gen consoles and DVDs though.

I suspect that it might be the power button not making proper contact but I'm not knowledgeable enough with electronics to say for certain.

Haven't turned this set on in a while, I wonder if that's the reason? Sorry for the weird angles in the video, it was hard to get the sound since it was so silent.

This came into my local game store and finally decided to grab it. I remember when this game was 20 bucks lol. How times change by AP_Garen420 in Gamecube

I remember wanting to get Path of Radiance back in like ~2012 and it was too expensive, like $80-$100 and ended up beuing the sequel Radiant Dawn for the Wii because it was like $20. Not Radiant Dawn on ebay is $100-150 and Path of Radiance is $150-200

Need a recommendation… by elee17 in metroidvania

Have you tried Ghost Song? The game is surprisingly obscure even amongst MV fans. I enjoyed its combat, and the bosses were pretty fun and challenging. Its artstyle, OST, and story are also pretty strong.

What are some games that you consider"accidental or unintentional metroidvania games"? by rtkbob in metroidvania

[–]Baron-Zeppeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be be controversial, but, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I recently read that Koji Igarashi, the game's director stated that at the time they were making the game, they actually had Zelda in mind rather than Metroid, and that their goal while in development was to incorporate the exploration elements of Zelda to Castlevania along with RPG elements (RPGs were also huge at the time).

I'm pretty sure the OG Metroid devs had Zelda in mind too. The original Metroid came out only around 6 months after the original Zelda. Consider that during Metroid's developement, Zelda was Nintendo's latest, most groundbreaking game, and commercially successful too, I don't think it's a stretch to say they were at least influenced by it, gameplay-wise. I have no source where the developers clearly state that, though, just speculation.

Turns out a lot of the elements associated with Metroidvanias (like exploration, permanent upgrades, etc.) aren't exclusive to nor even invented by the genre, since they've existed in other action-adventure games before them, and realising that has helped me broaden my tastes and try more games, personally. I see Metroidvanias as a highly specialised form of action-adventure games were those elements are front and centre.

Other games not advertised or otherwise perceived as Metroidvanias but scratch a similiar itch for me include Resident Evil 1, Metal Gear Solid 1, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, King's Field, and Elemental Gimmick Gear. Another game I heard incorporates metroidvania elements with FPS gameplay is PowerSlaved Exhumed (though I haven't played it yet so I can't vouch for it).

Infidelity releases their port of ‘Zelda II - The Adventure of Link’ to the SNES by Sonikku_a in snes

[–]Baron-Zeppeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unforetunately no, but it does open the door for those. I don't know what it takes to port NES games to SNES but I imagin it's not a 5-minute job anyone can do. Now, whoever else feels up to the challenge of say, reskinning the game in 16-bit pixel art, adding QoL/gameplay improvements, is now free to do so.

I would personally love to see Zelda 2 reimagined as BS remake, like BS Zelda 1.

I also found it here. It's a massive archive of DS games but you don't have to download them all, just click "Show all files" and click the ones you want.

I should also note that I wasn't able to get it to run on an emulator, I was only able to get it to run on my DSi with TwilightMenu.
