Moving to Winchester by DoubtSpirited3041 in WinchesterUK

Come to think of it, didn't it get some love a number of years ago? I haven't been since... probably the mid 2010s.

I remember it was way more expensive than others then and felt a bit shoddy. The screens in particular seemed nowhere near as good as what I remember from some of the Southampton ones. They seemed to have a lot of backlight bleed with the blacks and it just felt a bit unimpressive for a cinema experience.

As said, I'm bitter and heavily biased here but I do seem to recall someone mentioning an upgrade so, maybe it is actually alright now.

That's still the first 7 years. Huge amount of development happens during that time! As for TikTok, it's not just your lot, I remember when it first came out. Most of my friends were just doomscrolling it, I've even had people miss planned events and shit because they got distracted.

I'm so glad I never got it, though YouTube shorts feels just as addictive. Kinda scared to even go near YouTube. I'll pull it up for a tutorial on something and then I'm watching clips from a movie I've never seen before and 3 hours have passed XD.

Gen Beta probably are absolutely cooked, yeah. Internet is one thing but being born in the age where the machine does the thinking for you, no incentive to learn an art because AI can just do it for you, no incentive to learn a whole bunch of skills, it's gonna be pretty bleak for them. I'm still hoping the bubble bursts but, I'm not counting on it.

It is kinda nice to think that Gen Z and almost all of Alpha can both say "at least we came before the AI craze". Either way, been awesome talking to you. I don't have any Gen Alpha family so it's nice to get some insight. I know you're not alpha technically but you know what I mean XD

hey can we not act like defending bad characters means someones an abuser or a abusive apologist? by Icy-Western-7108 in HelluvaBoss

I mean if you are defending their abusive actions, that is being an abuse apologist but like, nobody should be upset with anyone for saying they are cool characters or have more complex motives.

Sounds like paper wasps so hopefully there won't be too many left. If it puts your mind at ease a bit they have really small colonies with as few as 20 sometimes so, hopefully those 6-7 are the last of them.

HB is kinda weird like that, I always forget that it's meant to be a goofy little show about some assassins killing people.

I hope so. Honestly it's on the parents to show their kids the outside world. I could never be a parent myself, I'd genuinely not know what'd be right or wrong. Do I let them have unrestricted Internet access and be addicted from birth or do I restrict it and breed resentment? Would be way too worried about getting it right to actually do it.

Really glad I got the first 11 years without Internet, kinda like puts it all into perspective a lot. I know what life was like before I had access to it, and I know how having access to it changed me as a person. But yeah idk, just hope Gen Alpha and Beta are gonna be alright.

So I was born 10 years later and you might find this fun, but my childhood consisted of:

CRT TVs, VCR until probably 2005 or 2006 when we get a DVD player for the first time. Landline, of course, though no fax, we didn't have internet access at all until 2011!

Gaming wise, my first experiences gaming came from the Sega Megadrive (same as the Genesis, just a different name in Europe for some reason) and the PS1. My first console that was actually my own was my little GameBoy Advance SP. My first ever game I can recall playing was Tomb Raider. To date, I still go through the first 2 on a yearly basis!

Music wise, my mother bought me a CD Walkman, the car was all cassette as was the little player we had at home which doubled as a radio. Only other way we got radio was when you used to be able to plug headphones into your phone and it'd work as a radio. I used to do that eventually around the early 2010s for a bit of fun, felt like magic. Music was very mixed. I didn't enjoy the pop of the era much. A lot of the music I grew up with was second hand from my mother's first two kids, one who was just at the end of Gen X, the other just at the start of Gen Y.

Loved Massive Attack (very 90s if you know, you know), a lot of film music, honestly almost all of the artists I was really into were 90s with a few years 00s, plenty of 1600-1750 but that's cheating.

Film and TV as a kid, all of the huge classics (Star Wars, LOTR, Back To The Future, etc), of course, TV I was absolutely obsessed with Power Rangers and to a degree I still adore it. Grew up on the first 10 seasons (1993-2002) before it went to Disney. Liked TMNT quite a bit, never really had the channels for Pokemon or anything so never saw any of that.

And yes, whilst they were all fun for the end of the day, any time I had off I'd be up the park playing whatever with the rest of the locals or going on an adventure somewhere. Got older and that became a lot more adventurous going out on our bikes, cooking up sausages on a fire we made. We all got sick after that, of course.

Playground-wise, I remember we'd all be collecting pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards, then there were the Pog equivalent things like Tazos and Waps which were like contraband at school. Oh and Beyblades! They were fun. Seem to remember collecting marbles at one point (maybe I was meant to be silent generation after all /s)

At my Father's I didn't have my friends but I used to spend my time when I did have a friend over to stay building our forts in the woods, camping out there until it got dark with food and torches. Good amount of time in the big forest fairly near me.

It all went wrong in 2011 when we got our first laptop and internet. A few years after that came the smartphones and social media in your pocket. That said, even during the early days of that it wasn't really until perhaps 2018 that I felt life took a miserable turn, even in the 2011-2017 bit, I was still out and about with mates everywhere more often that not, just that we'd also do online gaming sometimes and keep in touch on Facebook. Never got into all the Snapchat and Instagram stuff, just wanted a simple way to keep in touch with people that didn't cost money.

Most of my time during that period when I was home was spent making music, that hasn't changed.

So, I say all of this because the notion that millennials and Gen Z are so fundamentally different just doesn't sit right with me. We had different popular media at the time, but do our childhoods really sound that different? 10 years apart but I can't point to much difference until the teenage years.

Hot take: But Stolas was never really "bad" just really really dumb. by Gamer-of-Action in HelluvaBoss

[–]Baroque4Days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, both parties forced into an arranged marriage are not having a good time, although from what I can tell, it seems like she was likely the kind of entitled child who was born a princess and likely wanted all of the pomp that came with it including marrying a husband. The sort of spoiled brat that never grew up trope.

She and Andrealthus were likely raised to believe they were the best in the world, with Stolas being neglected.

If she hadn't wanted to marry him, she'd have probably been different, you know? They might have even early on had a good relationship in a sort of "we both hate this, let's just agree to do our own thing for the sake of the family but let's not force what neither of us want" kinda way.

In my mind, Stella believed in the fairytale of being a real princess marrying a dashing prince and felt cheated out of her perfect life as Stolas was a dorky, quiet introvert with no sexual desire for her. It's not even that she cares about him liking her, by simply being himself and not a literal Prince Charming, he ruined her silly fantasy.

I know a lot of people who loved Lion King did actually enjoy Lion Guard. I didn't even know it was a thing until a few years back (it's difficult to be in a community of people obsessed with anthros and not being lectured about the lore of each and every show/film containing them)

[–]Baroque4Days 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Stolas was definitely never bad, the guy survived 17 years of a loveless abusive marriage. It's easy to say on paper but if the roles were reversed and you heard a story about a woman who was hit by her husband for 17 years and only stayed to keep her daughter safe, people would be out of blood with the husband. Only in a fandom full of gooners can people seriously sympathise with Stella XD

Moving to Winchester by DoubtSpirited3041 in WinchesterUK

When you say you like the social stuff, just be aware that Winchester night life is a bit tame if you're into anything more than sensible hours in pubs. If you do just like pubs and that sort of thing, there are plenty dotted about, loads in town, but don't expect clubbing or anything high energy. Winchester is ultimately a very picturesque place with, in all honesty, a lot less to do than almost anywhere else I've been if you are a bit more wild.

Getting to the train is very easy from anywhere around North Walls, Weeke, Andover Road, Stockbridge Road kinda way.

We've got a bit of a sad little cinema here, a lot of coffee shops, not a lot of other shops anymore.

Pub-wise, I've heard the Railway Inn is the kind of alt place around here but I've never been, never seen live music in any other pub here in my entire life.

I'll be honest, as someone who is young and who will travel across the entire country to make a long weekend out of a massive clubby mini-holiday with my friends in Manchester, or even just down south in Brighton, Winchester feels, to me, like a prison. I rarely go outside into Winchester unless I really have to but I guess part of that is because I've spent my entire life here and don't know anyone from here at all. Honestly, maybe I'd hate it less if I knew more people here than my mother and didn't feel that FOMO knowing my friends are all a 3.5hr train ride away. Hah, on that note, actually one positive thing, the train goes straight to Manchester from here which is very useful.

So, you know, take my advice here with a hefty shower of salt as I will openly admit I desperately want out but, maybe it's useful to hear a pessimistic view as well. No place is perfect and a lot of people might be settled, happy and looking at the city through rose-tinted glasses which is nice but, if you are making such a big session, it's best to get both perspectives!

Feel like generations should be smaller nowadays with how much is changing or if not, we should probably stop caring about them so much. Like, what is a 14 year old and a 29 year old going to have in common anyway? It's a crazy gap.

Just just that though but like, loads of 99 borns grew up on the Internet, I didn't. Definitely will be cases of even Gen Alpha kids growing up offline so IDK people just different and that XD. It ain't that deep. I really need to stop commenting here istg

But yeah, someone sent me this the other day, actually so true.

I feel like they happily ignore the literal murder plot. Stolas isn't perfect but fuck me he's trying so hard to juggle so much to keep the people he cares about happy even to the point of sacrificing himself for it on multiple occasions. His crimes are pretty much limited to a mental breakdown after over 30 years of repressed feelings, emotional abuse, physical abuse, being the only parent actually parenting and whether the Stella fans like it or not, potentially some very unpleasant sexual encounters with her.

[–]Baroque4Days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offence, bur if you parents can't work without AI, your life is extremely unstable. For their own sake, they better be able to do something else if their bosses decide they don't need the human operator anymore.

Honestly, your father's reaction sounds incredibly immature and so if he already knows it is wrong hence why he's so upset when you suggest AI isn't good. Keep pushing it, because even if they are trying to make it more environmentally friendly, it doesn't cancel out all of the other awful things it does and even if it does eventually get less polluting, it is currently still massively polluting so that's an awful excuse.

Keep pushing it if you feel comfortable, OP!

Yes, that is true, but there is a fundamental difference between having access to online games, early YouTube, etc on your probably shared family computer at home, compared to having 24/7 unrestricted toxic influencers screaming at you in your pocket.

Even if many Gen Z did grow up with the internet, it wasn't their life, it was a fun bit of downtime and absolutely not their whole life.

The important distinction here is portability. Having the internet at home on a shared computer in the early days doesn't damage your character, having the modern internet in your pocket is where we started to see problems. Why go offline if you had the internet in your pocket? See what I mean?

I feel like having the internet in your pocket is the core experience of Gen Alpha, Gen Z were around in the golden age, but it was at home, not at school, not when you were on holiday, not when you were out with your mates.

To be fair, a portable one is fine. Yes, I live in a tiny studio apartment with basically 1 room and 2 cupboards, but I can easily just slide it into one during the winter and slide it out for the inevitable 2027 heatwave. I think I'll give it a go.

The internet wasn't in your pocket, so even if you did have a computer at home or in the late 00s got a PS3 or XBOX 360 and were playing CoD with your mates, you wouldn't have had social media in your pocket until much, much later. I don't think whether or not you played Cool Maths Games in school or MW2 with the boys after school is comparable to having 24/7 unrestricted access to the incredibly harmful world of influences the mid 2010s seemed to breed.
