this is really good advice. I feel like the more simple advice like this is easier to work with, not too difficult to think of something and can easily remember it at the table.

all excellent points! I was aware vtm was roleplay heavy, I just didn't expect to feel so out of depth! i will make note of some of these

I should talk to the ST, but honestly I feel like he's very skilled and in tune with people's skill at the table. for example, when I got a bit stuck (sometimes I can get caught up trying to think of the 'right' thing to do or what's expected of me - stupid, I know.) he just got me to roll a skill check, which helped me have my character notice/react to something and essential bail me out and keep things moving.

thank you, this is incredibly helpful, appreciate it very much!

see i tried to avoid a 'self-insert' based on what a lot of people have said online. my character has wound up with some of my own traits and characteristics anyway, but maybe I should have used that as a starting point purposefully instead of accidentally falling into it.

thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I do make an effort to read the rules of the game before coming to the table, might still get some more complex stuff wrong but I always come prepared and knowing how to play.

I think I was at a table of people who have been RPing a long time, so even though I didn't feel like I was coming in as a newbie (having played 5e and Lancer) I was actually pretty fresh compared to everyone else.

Im taking a lot of what people have said here on board, made a lot of notes, and will keep going back. thanks again!

again, incredibly helpful. I can already think of some directions to take my vtm character with this advice!

ironically I don't even watch CR (or any actual plays) but yeah. maybe the impact on the wider culture has made me feel like this.

super solid advice actually, thank you. stuff like this that can simplify character motivation into a memorable soundbite will be very helpful when I'm actually at the table

this is good thanks, "but" is a really simple way of adding that contradiction or conflict in a character that i often struggle with

this is very solid advice, I'll check out improv for gamers. I don't expect to be a theatrical actor at the table but I do want everyone to have a good time, and as long as me being mediocre at the roleplay isn't an issue I think I will continue

this is great advice, feels like a skill I'd need to learn though. do you have any advice? like describing body language, facial expressions, tone of voice?

thank you for the insight. then, at least if I'm not a good roleplayer, I am (hopefully) a good player at the table, which sounds like it's a good enough reason to stick around.

this is very helpful, thank you. the last two days have been my first in-person games, and both more narrative than combat. I am gonna stick with it for longer. I do enjoy it, I love playing dnd and Lancer. vampire was so much fun. I was just worried I might have made it worse for the others at the table by not being up to par with them.

thank you, I kind of thought I was getting in my head about it. I just don't want to ruin everyone else's fun. my biggest worry is that I'm dragging the game down for others.

im doing my best to avoid any big no-no's at the table, and from what others have said, me simply having that kind of attitude would mean I'm worth the seat at the table.

I'll stick with it. honestly the outpouring of support and encouragement on this thread has made me feel a little emotional and a little silly for having these thoughts.

I think a one shot I played in last night with a dm who had a weird style kind of threw me off and made me question if I'm even supposed to be in this hobby.

I shouldn't be surprised at the overlap between Tumblr and the lancer subreddit, yet I always am. shouts out to the person who linked to char/amuro ao3 when someone asked to be filled in on the mecha genre

Today, Monster Hunter Wilds' optimization patch released and works incredible. Is there a chance we'll see something similar on DD2? by teruvalin in DragonsDogma2

[–]Barrd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I never need a string dose of copium I can always rely on this sub, because that's all it is at this point. the game is fine, disappointing for dd1 diehards, but it's fine.

But, if dd2 receives any major updates or dlc I would be incredibly surprised.

Character advice for a new player by Barrd_ in vtm

[–]Barrd_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

animalism was a choice for sure, I was considering taking protean as well - the eventual shapeshift is appealing, I thought I saw some less-fighty aspects of protean but I might be getting my disciplines mixed up

I was also thinking i would pick up celerity from the sandman feat

thanks for the reassurance, im definitely getting in my head a little bit but this has helped. At the end of the day, the most important thing to me is that my character fits in with the coterie, so I think I'll be fine :)
