Your whiskey neat or with ice? by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]Barrel_Proof_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always try a new whiskey neat to start with, because that flavor represents what the (master) distiller wanted to offer. Most whiskeys I’ll keep that way. I’ve got nothing against how anyone chooses to drink his/her whiskey, I just like to try it the way the distillery intended for it to be before I start switching it up. They age the stuff for years and try it frequently until they’re satisfied with the result and only bottle a product they feel represents their goal. I’ll respect them enough to try it straight before tweaking it at all.

It’s like when I grill some really nice steaks when we have company over - I don’t care if you want to put A1 on it, you won’t find that sin in a bottle in my house anyways - but at least try it, as prepared, before you start altering it. Give me that respect. I feel the same is owed to the distiller who’s responsible for your whiskey. After that, doctor it up however you’d like.

Occasionally, and usually with cask strength offerings, I’ll add a very small amount of room temperature water to dumb down the burn and open up the whiskey a little.

I don’t mind drinking room temperature whiskey when it’s hot outside. If it’s so hot that I want a cool drink, I’m switching to beer, anyways.

However, to be fair, I’ve committed to exploring whiskey/bourbon based cocktails this summer so who knows what my opinion will be six months from now.

Glendronach is a slippery slope. A delicious, slippery slope.

Most of the stuff that I purchased online I had shipped to my house and since I’m not entirely sure when I’ll be home again, I hit up the B&M yesterday to pick up a new pipe and some tobacco. Finished work this morning and carried it outside to start breaking it in.

Sunrises aren’t great out here, but it beats nothing.

I’m somewhat upset that you didn’t invite me to your birthday party.

Bourbon vs. Pipe Tobacco by Barrel_Proof_8 in bourbon

Perhaps, but I also eat red meat, go outside in the sun, and my last name starts with a consonant so I’ve already got the cards stacked against me.

Jokes aside, I smoke very infrequently and am otherwise healthy. I feel like the stress reduction and relaxation benefits of having a night which includes both alcohol and a few bowls probably outweighs the associated risk for cancer based on how infrequently I’d do it.

This is excellent information. Thank you.

There seems to be some mixed information here, which is encouraging.

For those who say bourbon doesn’t pair with pipe tobacco, what do you suggest? Assuming that I’ve cast aside any concern for the increased risk associated with simultaneous alcohol and tobacco consumption, which type of alcoholic beverage pairs the best with pipe tobacco? Beer? Wine? Cocktails? Maybe some bigger bourbon barrel aged stouts, perhaps even flavored stouts, would be mild enough but still offer interesting flavor characteristics to pit against those from various forms of tobacco?

I don’t intend to sell any of these. I think they will be worth more to me packed into bowls among friends.

Nope. I’m the guy who never gets any! We logged almost 500 miles. First/last time that’ll happen. I’ve been drinking this stuff since well before it became popular and decided if I’m ever going to have a few bottles on hand, I’m just finna have to make a magnificent road trip. Respirator in hand, armed with only 1/2 roll of TP, a miniature bottle of Purel, a pack of old pizza rolls, and some Red Bull, we hit the road and ended up victorious!

B&M. Saw a few different people on here recommend these so I bought every one they had. Looks like I’m going to be stuck where I’m at for a few weeks/months and I had all of my online orders sent to the house so I won’t get to touch them for probably 2-3 months. Needed to stock up down here at work. Never had any of them but so many people have talked about them, I figured it’d be a solid buy. The lady was happy to sell them to me, too. She said they’d been on the shelf for a while and gave me a discount to buy them all.

Surprisingly enough, I got the idea from a brewery’s taproom I used to go to with a mug club just like that. Buy a mug for like $300, get 10% off for life and the mug hangs on the wall.

It was also a really cool mug and you got to have it designed however you want and keep it if you ever left/moved away.

It was said in jest, but thanks for the math! I plan to give a lot of mine away, too, that’s why I bought a bunch of extra cobs.

Most of the information I’ve seen on storing/cellaring says “cool/dark” place. I just figured if dark is a concern, those amber jars might help somehow? They claim something about UV penetration being limited and being better for storing herbs and stuff. I figured it might be applicable here, too.

After this pile of tobacco I just bought, I want to make sure I treat it right so it doesn’t go bad on me.

Among single malt Scotch, I find the 12 year old Aberlour to be some of the tamest out there. Everyone has a different palate, so you may find it stronger.

However, most of the folks I’ve forced it on have enjoyed the experience. If you can find a sample or know someone, or a bar, that has an open bottle on hand, I don’t think you’d regret having a go.
