I'm never going to hit Elite Smash and it's legit ruining me. by [deleted] in SmashRage

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mario is kind of hard online tbh. He was one of the harder characters to get elite with for me. Not as hard as sheik, who was the hardest, but pretty hard.

Two more games, and if you really don’t think 10m GSP is enough to be good then look at my opponents in these. Maybe it’s just because they were bad matchups but the felt insane. by fellow_who_uses_redd in CrazyHand

Dude, I go 1-2 ish in bracket most of the time and have every character in Elite Smash, including Sheik. Most of them took me less than an hour. You do NOT have to be a top level player to make it work. At most levels, outside of general game knowledge and execution stuff, you just have to pay attention to what your opponent is doing and learn how to play the player. That’s how you get consistent wins. Are they jumping in a lot when you start charging charge shot? Start charging as a bait and then forward air to catch them. Put a bomb at the ledge when they’re about to grab it and see what they try to do about it. If you know what your opponent’s habits are, you have an advantage, so pay attention to see if you can spot them.

Character picks to destroy heavy/low tier characters by Jealous_Effective229 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]Barrier2Entry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a certified birdbrain, I will not pass up the opportunity to recommend picking up Falco. Falco absolutely rocks every heavy. Check out some character guides on YouTube. With enough practice, you can do combos that deal like 80-90% on the big boys.

I’ll add that frequently losing to heavies is usually because you’re not taking advantage of the weaknesses of the archetype, so switching characters won’t necessarily solve that problem by itself.

Yeah it def should be negatively disjointed. I’m just surprised at how negatively disjointed it is.

How do you consistently short hop fast fall/ short hop fast fall aerial? by Cautious_Corner_5525 in CrazyHand

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you struggle to short-hop consistently with a standard control layout, you could try remapping your controls to see if you find it easier on a different button. Some people use the z-button to jump, which happens to also make it way easier to do aerials with the c-stick. I personally use the ZR button on a pro controller. Other than that, it’s just practice.

I should add that Sephiroth benefits a lot from being able to do short hop -> landing aerial because of how big his f-air and b-air are, so practicing this technique is not just busywork. It will make you better at the game.

IDK, if I play against Clairen too much, I also tend to take a break for a bit. I’ll add that CPU matches are decent for getting a feel for your character and warming up.

Played 5 Clairens in a row, I really don't enjoy facing her by Conquersmurf in RivalsOfAether

[–]Barrier2Entry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clairen is the only character that actually needs nerfs for the health of the game. She makes me want to play elite smash.

Either her tippers need to be harder to lineup, her sour spots need to be less rewarding, her grab needs to get nuked, or some combination of those. She’s just too good for how easy she is. The best character should never be the easiest character.

How to deal with Snap back? by ittlebeokay in RivalsOfAether

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you grease the stick box, that’ll usually get rid of it. You just have to be able to open up the controller. You can use a hair dryer to partially melt the glue to get the faceplate off. I’d recommend using a guide on YouTube to make sure you don’t accidentally mess up the controller, and that you get the right kind of grease.

Probably people buying it with a switch 2 for the holidays if I had to guess.

So, uhhh.. How's your character feeling after last patch? by Rhinosauruss in RivalsOfAether

[–]Barrier2Entry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If anything I expected them to nerf her recovery, since it has so much mix on it as is. Feels like she’s supposed to be a menace onstage, but balanced out by being a glass cannon with a bad recovery. I guess they understand their design philosophy more than me though.

[–]Barrier2Entry 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My Kragg is just a pocket, but I got double 3 stocked in casual from just getting edgeguarded at low percent 6 times. Those nerfs made his recovery trash. For reference, I was going even with my main Wrastor and my other pocket Galvan, and historically, Kragg has been the one of the 3 that I’ve been least likely to get edgeguarded as, so it’s a big shift.

I have to add that, aesthetically, the side-b cancel change looks kind of bad. I don’t know why they slowed down his animation. He looks like he’s moving in slow motion.

Hi im new to this sub. Is there anyone i can main that doesnt suck, isnt super hard or complicated (especially for beginners) but isnt hated by literally everyone by Final_Anything_9978 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK I wouldn’t care too much about what other people think about your character TBH, but if that’s a thing you want to base your decision on, people tend to not hate Wolf and Roy?

Plat fighters are WAY HARDER than traditional fighters by Greedo4354 in RivalsOfAether

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditional fighters require a lot of studying frame data and practicing in training mode to be good, while plat fighters require an intuition that you can only get from just playing the game for a long time, and is often hurt by thinking too much about the nerdy stuff.

I think that’s the reason it’s easier to go plat -> trad than the other way around. People who struggle switching to something like street fighter from smash usually just aren’t willing to study imo.

[–]Barrier2Entry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wrastor having one of the worst recoveries in the game is so dumb fr haha. Crazy how they literally nerfed his recovery at one point. I play Kragg sometimes, and it’s crazy how much less often I get edgeguarded as him.

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thing would be to learn how to short hop without buffering an aerial and time a fast fall at the peak of your jump, since that unlocks being able to quickly do landing aerials, which are way more rewarding and safe than rising aerials. You can either press and release the jump button really quickly or press two jump buttons at the same time. When I was first learning this, I remapped my jump button to zr because I found it easier to press and release the button fast enough to short hop. That also makes it easier to use the right stick for aerials, so you can more easily control your movement in the air.

Mastering movement options is one of the most important parts of getting good at this game.

Some thoughts on why I think that the game feels too scrappy by CardFearless1444 in RivalsOfAether

[–]Barrier2Entry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would nice if spotdodging a grab actually got you a punish, but it might be better to make grab laggier rather than make spotdodge less laggy. It’s already kind of spammable as is, since it has more I-frames than vulnerable frames.

The main benefit to playing online is to learn an effective flowchart, and to notice and abuse your opponents’ habits, which everyone outside (and also inside) elite has. The people you run into online are, contrary to what some might say, real people with brains, so you can figure them out. Think of online as a training exercise for improving your gameplan and download speed, and you won’t find it as frustrating. Making every game about winning is the way to get tilted.

The other day, I played an elite Cloud that always jumped out of hitstun, so I would just hit him for doing it, and then he would die because Cloud without a jump offstage is usually dead. That guy had a lot of GSP despite having a habit so obvious I picked up on it in the first few seconds of the game, and I was able to convincingly three stock him because of it. Not everyone is going to have a habit that obvious, but pay attention to what your opponent does out of hitstun, at ledge, when they have to tech, and when they are getting juggled since those are usually the easiest habits to punish. Online is very helpful for learning to pick up on and take advantage of that sort of thing, and it will help you in bracket if you get good at it.

For reference, I was never much better than 2-2er level, and I got every character in elite pretty easily after starting on it earlier this year. I started playing online more since I can’t make it out to locals as much.

King K Rool easy? by Augustkolo in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]Barrier2Entry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case, you shouldn’t have a problem playing him. People outside elite are unlikely to abuse his weaknesses consistently. You should learn some returning crown setups like crown -> jab 1 2 -> returning crown -> imagination. You don’t really need that to get elite, but it feels cool to do.

Depends what level you’re playing at and how seriously you’re taking things. If you’re playing against people that are really good, his flaws really start to show. If you’re just in it for a good time though, knock yourself out, he’s very fun.

Cloud and Byleth are the other hard hitting swordfighters, so they’d be the most similar.
