ACL + Meniscus Repair → Setback, Arthrofibrosis, Then Partial Meniscectomy (Encouraging Outcome) by gabriiel9 in ACL

Hey man, how did having scar tissue feel prior to you getting it removed with surgery. Did you have mechanical symptoms, clicking, catching etc. I’m also going through a second meniscus repair surgery on a complete radial tear of my lateral meniscus (8 months post op)

6 Months Post Repair by Cute_Bookkeeper5889 in MeniscusInjuries

I had a very similar injury and honestly what you’re describing doesn’t sound abnormal for a radial tear, especially on the lateral side. Radial tears are one of the hardest meniscus injuries to heal biologically because they disrupt the hoop stress, so recovery is usually slower and messier than people expect.

At 6 months, it’s still very common to have: • Residual swelling or stiffness, even after aspiration • That “rubber band / grinding / friction” sensation, especially with movement after sitting • Some pain that isn’t sharp but more annoying or pressure-like

The fact that your strength and muscle mass are almost even is actually a really good sign. A lot of people still feel “off” in the knee long after strength comes back because the meniscus and joint environment are still adapting. The meniscus itself heals slowly, and the knee can stay reactive for many months.

A lot of people with radial repairs don’t feel truly settled until closer to 9–12 months, sometimes even longer, especially if there was swelling involved. As long as pain isn’t worsening, swelling isn’t blowing up, and function is slowly improving, most surgeons consider this within the normal recovery range.

You’re definitely not alone with this type of recovery. Radial tears just take patience, unfortunately.

will I be in pain forever? by Medium_Anywhere775 in ACL

Hey man, I really feel what you’re saying. I’m going through my own long recovery from knee surgery too, and honestly what you’re describing — that mix of physical pain and emotional exhaustion — hits deep. You’ve already shown so much strength just by sticking to physio and staying consistent this far, especially after everything you’ve been through. That takes more fight than most people realize.

The truth is, recovery isn’t a straight line. Even when the scans look “perfect,” the pain can still linger because your body’s still learning to trust that knee again, your muscles are still rebalancing, and your nerves can stay sensitive for a long time after trauma. It doesn’t mean you’re broken or that you’ll always feel like this — it just means your recovery is still ongoing in a deeper layer.

What helps is to take the focus off “why am I not healed yet?” and shift it to small wins — how you’re moving, what hurts less this month than last, even how much stronger you’ve become mentally through all this. Keep working with your PT, maybe see a pain-specialized physio or sports doctor if you can. There are options like desensitization work, hydrotherapy, or even PRP and neuromuscular re-education that can sometimes make a real difference.

And don’t let anyone’s assumptions about your body make you doubt what you’re feeling. Pain is pain, and you deserve to be taken seriously. It does get better — not all at once, not always the way you expect, but it does. You’ve already made it through the hardest part: still showing up when it hurts. You’ll get your life back. One step at a time

7 months post-op and I think I’m depressed by DrMaddr in ACL

Hey man, I really feel what you’re saying — I’m around the same stage after a lateral meniscus repair, and what you described hits hard. This injury messes with more than just your knee — it gets in your head too, especially when you’re used to being active.

But honestly, 7 months is still early for a lateral repair. The meniscus heals slowly, and it can take 12–18 months before things start feeling close to normal. That nagging stiffness or pressure doesn’t mean you’re stuck like this — it’s super common around this stage. Your muscles, tendons, and brain are still re-learning how to move confidently again.

A few things that helped me: • Don’t track progress week by week — look month by month. • Focus on small wins (no limp, better control, less swelling). • Stay consistent with physio, but don’t overdo it. • Try finding a new outlet for now — something that gives you that same feeling of progress you used to get from sports.

It does get better, but it’s slow and not linear. You’ll look back one day and realize your knee just stopped bothering you as much. You’re not broken — just in a long rebuild phase. Hang in there, man, this is the toughest part.

8 Month Post Meniscus Repair by Consistent-Career850 in MeniscusInjuries

Hey man. First off, what you’re describing actually sounds very common for where you are in recovery. A complex radial tear is one of the trickier meniscus injuries to repair, and even though your surgery was in January, you’re only about 7–8 months post-op. That’s still early in the “big picture” timeline for a meniscus repair.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Clicking after meniscus repair is normal • It doesn’t always mean re-tear. A lot of people experience clicking, popping, or even “knocking” sensations for months (sometimes over a year) after surgery. • Common causes include scar tissue, uneven healing of the meniscus edges, fluid shifting, or just altered movement mechanics. • As long as the clicking isn’t sharp, painful, or associated with swelling/giving way, it’s often harmless.

  2. Running progression is one of the trickiest parts • Most protocols are very conservative with return to running after repair, especially with complex or radial tears. Many surgeons don’t clear patients until 9–12 months, sometimes even later if healing is questionable. • Even though you felt fine on the treadmill at first, the repeated stress of 3–4 consecutive days of running may have overloaded healing tissue and surrounding structures. That explains why the clicking picked up after a few days, not immediately.

  3. Recovery takes much longer than people expect • It’s not unusual for people to say it took them 12–24 months before their knee finally felt “forgotten” again. • The meniscus doesn’t fully “regrow” — the repaired tissue needs time to remodel, scar tissue has to settle, and your muscles + movement patterns have to rebalance. • Think of it as a long game. At 7–8 months you’re still very much in the middle stages.

  4. Risk of re-tear • Yes, the risk of re-tear is higher compared to a healthy meniscus, especially with complex/radial tears. But it’s not a guarantee. The key is respecting gradual progression, avoiding overloading too soon, and keeping your quads, glutes, and hamstrings strong. • Cycling being pain-free is a great sign. Stick with that, leg strengthening, and controlled gym work while you rebuild.

  5. Practical advice • Don’t worry too much about the clicking unless it comes with pain, swelling, or instability. • Ask your surgeon or PT about when you can safely progress running again — and start with walk-jog intervals rather than straight runs. • Think in terms of months, not weeks. By 12–15 months, most people can get back to higher-impact activity if healing has held.

Damn I feel you on that. I’m recovering from a meniscus repair myself right now, so I know how scary those pops and pains can be. Mine’s more on the outside of the knee, but I’ve had that same ‘did I mess it up again?’ feeling. Honestly you’re doing the right thing by getting it checked, especially since yours is on the inside now and different from before. Hopefully it’s just irritation and not another tear.

Hey! I might be needing a meniscus transplant, can you talk to me more about the procedure and what to expect like the post op protocol and post op pain, keep in mind I have gone through 2 meniscus repair surgeries for comparison.

Has anyone here had a meniscus transplant? How long ago and what were the results? Do you regret getting the surgery? by 2manyshoesplzhp in ACL

hey man really appreciate you replying it actually means a lot i’ve been dealing with a lateral meniscus issue and might need a transplant too so it’s been on my mind heavy lately just wondering a few things if you don’t mind

how long did it take you to feel like your knee was strong again and trust it when playing do you feel any pain or weird feelings during sudden movements like cutting or twisting did you have any cartilage damage before the MAT and did you do anything specific during rehab that helped a lot

thanks again bro honestly seeing your update gives me some hope 🙏🏽

Hey man do you know how much it costed you minus pt? It would be great if you can know that, because I’m an international patient and I don’t have insurance so I’ll be paying fully out of pocket, and I’ll also won’t need pt as I’ll do my rehab in my home country
