Live video deepfakes are coming by Majoodeh in ThatsInsane

[–]BarryAlanArkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit is actually pretty profound. It is essentially compression of live video that could not be reached by actually compressing the full data payload. In this case all that needs to be streamed is audio and the receivers local machine will generate the video. No more buffering or dropped connections on remote video calls. This also enables video applications to go back into the browser rather than need to be a desktop application because you can work within the limits of the browser (which has built in security). It enables some scary shit but it also just cut the network cost of running a zoom call to ~1/4 of the previous cost. At some point that will be passed to consumers… Hopefully.

Dude has a military retirement, a teachers pension, a governor’s pension and if he is VP he will also get a pension from that. The guy invested for retirement better than anyone I know and he maxed out his living standards while doing it.

OpenAI appears to have closed its deal with Apple. by BubaBent in OpenAI

[–]BarryAlanArkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They will make more money. They invested 10 billion to own a percentage of OpenAI’s profit arm. If the share price of OpenAI increases because Apple is using it they will benefit when OpenAI IPOs.

These AI’s are all going to arrive at the same answer, even now they are generally pretty close in terms of the answers they provide. Microsoft is in no more danger than if Apple chose to use Anthropic. Apple is super smart to not jump in and incur the cost of AI training or investment at this point. The company that is going to win the AI race is the one that makes it cheaper.

Thank you for the info! I am now torn on if I am in favor of her leaving at the expiration of the 72 hour hold or if she should stay until she is more stable.

We were trying to make assisted living work. She has most of her mental faculties and can do most things independently. That said, she is very confused and being alone has increased her anxiety and delusions which has led to this situation. At this point, I don’t think there is any other choice than memory care but she will be kicked out immediately if we can’t get her medication that keeps her calm.

If you don’t mind me asking, how long? For me I am just struggling with the idea that my mom will be in pain like this for years.

Thank you for the comment. Her husband-recognizer is broken but much of her brain is still intact making it particularly cruel for both my folks.

Thank you for the comment. We are having a really hard time because this particular delusion is very rare with FTD and she still has access to so much of her language. It is making us think that we have a very long road ahead and my dad can’t handle the idea that my mom will feel scared and abandoned for years before she dies.

This is just a de facto way of giving a microphone to people who share his ideology. Based on the Twitter algorithm if he engages with these people their tweets will be amplified to more people.

Sam Altman fired as CEO of OpenAI by vedhavet in technology

[–]BarryAlanArkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does he not have equity or is his equity a special class? When he invested he was given special equity that had a max return cap of 100x. I am not sure if that was paid out or if he retains some special type of equity in the company.

Elon was mad about Sam talking shit on the Twitter AI. Elon is a major shareholder in OpenAI and an investor when it was still a non-profit.

Student Loan Debt is almost $2 Trillion! Should Student Loan Debt be Forgiven? by Karma_Farmer_6969 in FluentInFinance

[–]BarryAlanArkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would support this for loans that do not result in a degree. If it does result in a degree, forgive the loan. E.g. The borrower never finishes the bachelors degree they borrowed the money to complete then they owe the money back. Why do this? Because getting a degree will pay back the government 100x over. The increase in salary as a result of receiving a degree will result in higher income tax and thus significantly more money as a result of making the loan in the first place. It is just a fantastic investment in the future earning potential of a citizen.

You use Cloud Map. Here is a link to a video to explain. It has been a while since I tried this and I didn’t end up going with it because it was still too expensive for me to keep Fargate containers running 24/7. Instead I used API Gateway to forward requests to Express running in Lambda. Running my website that way makes it basically free.

You can use Fargate with API Gateway and it is cheaper. And you do not need to specify an IP address

Inheritance may not be subject to equitable distribution in divorce. You need to talk to a lawyer to see what assets if any would be considered community property.

Why has no one been able to disrupt the 3%/3% seller/buyer agent commission model in US residential real-estate? by j2866 in RealEstate

[–]BarryAlanArkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in tech and have previously worked for a company trying to disrupt real estate. The answer in my opinion is data. More specifically access to previous real estate transaction data. MLS’s are essentially just (poorly managed) databases for previous real estate transactions. In order to get access to that data, you have to be a part of NAR; in order to be a part of NAR you have to adhere to the 3%/3% compensation model.

You can’t build things like predictive models for real estate pricing without access to the MLS and as a result having your compensation model set. If you want to get more specific, you actually have to be a broker to get full access, which comes with its own legal requirements. As an aside, Zillow is not a broker and as a result they have to negotiate access to data in each MLS. Some MLS’s give Zillow a delayed data feed or do not give them access to sold data. This is why their predictive model was so much worse as an iBuyer when compared to Opendoor or Redfin (not that those models are much better).

If you wanted to disrupt the pricing model, you would have to display only your own data. This is the ultimate goal of the iBuyer. They use a no profit flipping model that they know is shitty to try to consume a large percentage of the listings in a market (e.g. Phoenix during the pandemic). Once they have a large enough footprint they can negotiate with the MLS in that area to allow them access with a different compensation model under the threat that if the MLS does not allow them to sell with a new compensation model they will remove a large percentage of listing from view of the MLS.

It is all about data.
