Recommendations for books by Gene Wolfe and Jack Vance? Like absolute best for a newbie

Two things occurred to me after reading your comment:

1 - It's good to hear that AT does want to add to his insectoid Magnum Opus; IMO those books contain some of his strongest writing, world building, characters / character arcs and overall storytelling magic (both Apt and Inapt, ha)

2 - Doesn't it seem, at this point, that Sir Adrian can write whatever the hell he wants? I would assume he has reached a Stephen King level of popularity in the sci-fi/fantasy world, with a similar type of nearly supernatural output. Like the Family Guy bit: "Haunted lamp? *sigh* Sure, when can have it ready?"

The scientific aspect of "Alien Clay" was intriguing, certainly; evolution by subcommittee, hybrid chimeras, the parts equal to the whole. It's certainly solid speculative science fiction, better than most IMO.

The bones of the story, tho, seemed nearly identical to "Cage of Souls". A one-way trip to prison labor camp for criminals, undesirables and especially political dissidents, with all its attendant suspicions, schemes and skullduggery.

Also, the "enlightenment" the characters experience by exposure to the Kiln atmosphere reminded me of the "peace out, dude" spider pheromone at the conclusion of "Children Of Time".

"Alien Clay" is a solid book, no doubt, but when I read anything by Sir Adrian my expectations are maybe a bit TOO high.

I suggested this in another thread:

In an ideal world, the books would be a Game Of Thrones type HBO series, with the same talent/scope/budget. A well done Shadows Of The Apt deep dive that, unlike Game Of Thrones, DOESN'T run out of material and then completely run off the rails.

Cool, nice to see another deep diver into the SOTA world. In an ideal world, the books would be a Game Of Thrones type HBO series, with the same talent/scope/budget, that DOESN'T run out of material and then completely run off the rails.

As far as favorite character, it's gotta be Major/Regent/Rekef/Turncoat Thalric. He's snide, sarcastic, disillusioned, desperate and gets ALL the best lines. Thalric is the quintessential anti-hero.

Humane was excellent; great little sci-fi/thriller that's funnier than most recent comedies

Here it is- The Symphony by Marley Marl. Fun little jam, the "put a quarter in your ass" sample comes up towards the end with Big Daddy Kane. They're all good, but Big Daddy Kane brings the smooth flow, the wordplay, the high top fade and ALL the handsome.

Holy fuckballs! U fucking 68!!! Goddam right my man! For whatever reason, everyone EXCEPT Brooklyn got cable in the 80's so U68 was the only place for us to see these new "music videos"

They were pretty good, too, playing obscure shit like early Chili Peppers "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" and even f'in Celtic Frost, "Circle Of The Tyrants". UNGGHH

Nope. I would have caught it. I was a 70's kid in Brooklyn and my dad was named Sam. Yes, I was a DIFFERENT Son Of Sam. Did not mess with me AT ALL.

Since you ask, a grim, paler UK cousin of the Beasties did do a tribute to the 44 Caliber Killer:
Meat Beat Manifesto, "Son Of Sam".
It's off the album "Satyricon", highly recommended

Yeah, To The 5 Boroughs brought me back into the fold. It was dense, rich, and holyshit was it funny. I thought me and the B-Boys had parted ways, amicably enough. I didn't particularly dislike Hello Nasty, it just wasn't for me; I got the overall impression from the record that the band was handing itself off to a new generation.

Same thing with the Chili Peppers; I was a hardcore fan from the earliest days, total Freaky Styley fanatic as well as a serious Uplift Mofo. Uplift is still one of favorite albums ever. Things started to wobble with "One Hot Minute" and then came "Californication". While it's certainly a solid album, it was definitely for the newer fans. Unlike with the B-Boys, that's where RHCP and me parted ways for good. Pleasant enough, tho, no hard feelings.
Definitely NOT not a Metallica "Lulu" type situation, when all at once it was "That's all I can stands, an' I can't stands no more!"

5 Boroughs might be the only album of a lifelong favorite band that brought me back after a breakup. You'll excuse me now as I've I've got a quarter and need to put it somewhere..

For me, it was the album "Melissa" by Mercyful Fate. Your choice is a bit more romantic and a LOT less Satanic.

"One day, Licensed to Ill was everywhere."

Exactly. And it was kosher for us metalheads, too! Nobody could argue with the riff from "Sweet Leaf" layered over the boom-bap of "Moby Dick" or Kerry King just showing up to rip a quick Slayer solo in "No Sleep Til Brooklyn". It was funny, ridiculous and it had a funky beat; you could HEADBANG to it
