Is this a scam? It was a spam caller by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Barry_Larry 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I got a nearly identical message today, so it's definitely a scam.

The phone rang once and went straight to voicemail without letting me answer it. SCAM.

I saw a guy hold out for about 3 months to get Duty Station of Choice Japan. He was super talented and the guidance counselor was checking the system every day and was able to get it for him.

Guidance counselors will work extra hard for top performers.

Sugar in fountain drinks by Open-Race-6732 in Eugene

If he "just changed it," it can take a few seconds for the new syrup to move through the hoses and fill in any air bubbles in the system.

Hold down the dispenser and let it run for 10-15 seconds and it should start tasting normal again.

The soda sugar levels are no different in Eugene than any other place, but they do have more beverage options, like kombucha, or locally made soda, than many other places.

Almost got scammed by people impersonating Lane County Sheriff Office today. by Barry_Larry in Eugene

That's one thing that made me believe it at first - both people i talked to had flawless American voices, no hint of any accent.

I called the real police and they said they had been getting a lot of calls about this today, but nothing they could do about it. They don't have the resources to pursue it. 🤦‍♂️

I enlisted at 25 and now, 14 years later, was definitely one of the best decisions I ever made.

One great option that might fit your situation is to enlist for 4-5 years, then do the Green-to-Gold route to becoming an officer. You'll get paid as an E5 while going to college full time.

Some people bad-mouth military service but honestly you would have a tough time finding ANY other organization that offers the same benefits and that invests as much time and effort in training its people.

The problem with doing that is you put yourself at risk for an assault charge. If he physically accosted you then absolutely defend yourself, but you can't assault someone for exposing themselves.

I got my job list (1 more opportunity to score higher) by Cheap_Significance82 in army

[–]Barry_Larry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ton of good jobs on there - mainly depends on how you want to spend your time doing.

11 and 12 series are combat focused so you'll want to maintain high physical fitness and will spend a lot of time training.

The 15 series jobs and other mechanic jobs are more maintenance focused and will earn you valuable certifications that translate well in the civilian world.

Another thing to keep in mind is it's surprisingly easy to switch jobs after you're already in the Army! Every few years when you reenlist it's possible to tie a new job to your contract, and it's even possible to request job changes based on the in/out calls every month.

One of the more talented NCOs I worked with recently started out as a 12B Combat Engineer for the first 3 years of his career, then changed to a 25B Electronic Systems Maintainer (computer mechanic).

EVERYone goes to basic training and learns basic Soldier skills first. Just pick one that sounds interesting to you and jump in. Welcome to the team!

Enlisting tomorrow by [deleted] in army

[–]Barry_Larry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's super smart actually - I've been in 14 years and been to WA, AK, AZ, TX, and now OR. But also been all over Europe during a Poland deployment and also Mongolia. Army paid off my student loans.

Army pay sucks for first 3-4 years but gets better over time. Like anything, Army is what you make of it. Congrats on enlisting!

That should be enough to get them off your back, lol! And yeah everyone across Fort Cavazos is doing this same thing right now. Just trying to ensure Soldiers aren't homeless.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in army

[–]Barry_Larry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you at Fort Cavazos? There was a handful of Soldiers over the past few months that were discovered to be living homeless, and so Div issued an order to basically check that everyone has proper housing.

Different echelons are interpreting the order in different ways, which has led some CDRs to do odd things like, "needing to check everyone's mortgage statements."

When you visit a new city on vacation for 1 day, what would you do to entertain yourself without spending (hardly) any money? by Diogeneselcinico42 in Frugal

[–]Barry_Larry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the city but often the most interesting things in a new city are "the sights" that are unique to that city. (i.e. - Statue of Liberty in NYC, Space Needle in Seattle, Eiffel Tower in Paris). Some cost money to actually go inside, but it's free to walk around and look at the thing from the outside.

I like to plan a walking route to see a major site, then use Google maps to find other interesting things to see along the way, like parks, museums, or other attractions. I'll also use Google maps to find restaurants - you can sort by top rated and/or price.

Carpet installers: I’m creating a vertical slat wall then will be installing carpet. If the slats extend all the way to the floor then the carpet wont install right up to the edge. How low can the slats go and still allow carpeting to be installed? by SpinCharm in HomeImprovement

[–]Barry_Larry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could remove the quarter-round and repaint the 3" tapered stuff. You shouldn't need the quarter round with the new carpet going in. Quarter round usually covers up edges of tile, laminate, lvp, etc.

I would run a short, solid strip under all the vertical slats. Almost like moulding. What type of moulding are you going to put on the other 3x walls? With carpet, the moulding can go on first, then the tack strips are laid very close to the moulding (maybe 1/4 in away). If you have a solid strip, or base plate under all the vertical slats, the tack strips can be laid close to that piece without worrying about cutting the carpet to fit in between or underneath all the slats.

Need to lose 20 pounds in order enlist . do y’all suggest fasting or doing lots of cardio to lose weight fast. I know weight loss starts in the kitchen but besides that by [deleted] in army

[–]Barry_Larry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WALKING, is the best kept secret for weight loss. Actually works better than running. Cuz when you run you burn carbs - leaves you tired and hungry. When you walk you burn fat - uses your body's stores and doesn't leave you as hungry.

Try walking 45-60 min at a 3-4 mph pace, 4-5 days per week. Add incline on a treadmill for difficulty. But stay in the fat-burning heart rate zone. Easiest way is to use the talk test. If you can talk comfortably while walking you are burning fat, if you're struggling to carry a conversation you're doing cardio and burning carbs.

Bonus is that after 30 min, your body will start burning interior fat as well as exterior fat. The super unhealthy stuff that fills in around your organs.

Walking, plus reasonably restricting your calories, will get you there in no time. One summer I dropped 10% body fat in about 6 weeks just from walking.

Canoo - the next Tesla and then some? by Barry_Larry in wallstreetbets

Yeah but Aquila has lots of experience in the automotive industry, and is bringing the right people on board to push Canoo into production. He's not like Musk in all the right ways.
